Had an extremely productive weekend.
After 5 years of dicking around with the wrong powder, wrong caps, and wrong projectiles, I think I finally have a load that works well in my double rifle. Turns out if you just follow the instructions from the manufacturer, things will work out just fine for you, who could have imagined that. One of the guys in the bay next to me had a doppler radar chronograph which picked up one of my shots and apparently 70 grains of FFG German powder pushes a 430 grain projectile at 1,080 fps, so seems pretty respectable, though funnily enough it has less muzzle energy than a 223 Remington.
Went into the Catskills yesterday to scout it out for hunting and the one place I was had way fewer hikers than I expected, saw one other group at the trailhead but other than that didn't see anyone else. I think there'll definitely be some squirrels in there and shouldn't really be bother while doing it.
After 7 hours of driving, I'm very tired.

My guy you'd better use your 10ga and give them what-for. Federal recently made a limited run of Prairie Storm nickel plated #6's in 10ga.

Catskills park is only about 90 minutes from NYC, I just had to go a completely different direction to get to the shooting club I use.
My guy you'd better use your 10ga and give them what-for.
I'll be schlepping all 11-1/2 pounds of it for spring turkey, that's for sure.
Federal recently made a limited run of Prairie Storm nickel plated #6's in 10ga.
What I really need is for RST to load some 1-1/4 ounce #7-1/2 so I can shoot some trap....

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago
Dude a 10ga Mec Jr and 100 Cheddite hulls costs less than a box of RST.

The biggest bottleneck for me is finding wads for the loads I'd want to use. I would want to load 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 ounces of lead shot, but all the recipes I've been able to find call for Remington SP-10 wads, which have been impossible to find for the last 7 years or so. Though if you know of a manual that has load data for fibre wads I'd love to know who has it.
2
u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago
Ballistic Products BP1044s replaced the SP10 wads for lead field loads, and are the only game in town besides fibre basewads with overshot cards. Ballistic Products publishes load data through their Advantage manual (free PDF) for this wad.
I would suggest Longshot or Blue Dot for powder, I'm not happy with Pro Reach, it doesn't handle subfreezing temperatures worth a fuck and will give you bloopers below zero.
1
u/SakanaToDoubutsu 2 | Something Shotgun Related 1d ago
But from what I've been able to find the smallest shot size they recommend in the BP1044s are #2, which obviously is way too big for most clay grounds.
1
u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago edited 1d ago
Published load data down to 1oz PDF WARNING https://www.ballisticproducts.com/LD10BP1044.pdf
There is no functional difference in wad capability between running lead 2's and lead 9's. That's just the specific shot size they used for their specific testing and the corporate lawyers make them disclaim untested shot sizes.
Edit: I have personally used their 1 7/8oz #2 recipe with copper plated lead 4's for an ultraheavy pheasant load, specifically in NYS, at Tug Hill for planted peasants. Not recently as I haven't lived there since 1987, but still.

Ever since getting a chronograph, I love calculating foot-lbs of energy. It's fascinating to see how much speed makes a difference when comparing two cartidges or loads. Doesn't seem right how a 55gr bullet going 3,000fps has more energy than a bullet that's almost 4x the weight but going 1/3rd as fast. My favorite comparison is the super heavy 777gr 45-70 projectiles that are going subsonic but have the same energy as a 123gr 7.62x39 projectile going 2400fps. For anyone who wants to check, here's a ft/lbs calculator

Y’all ever seen someone jam a gun up so good you just had to step back and appreciate how bad it is?
Was out at the range today and somehow my PS-90 took a big ol’ bite out of my buddy’s mustache and managed to jam the mag in place in the same action.
He’s missing about a 1/4” of lip bristles and bitching about having to trim everything now and it took me the better part of half an hour to get all of them out from behind the mag release so I could get the empty mag back out (or would off be more correct?) of the gun.

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 1d ago
I've seen a guy once partially rip off his thumb with his turkshit. Dude fired a 3" magnum shell out of it while his thumb was resting on the charging handle. Had to rush himself out to emergency care
3
u/Quw10 1d ago
Had a family friend do something similar but less severe with a handgun. He kept having issues with his handgun jamming and after walking over and watching him shoot my dad noticed his thumb was riding the slide enough to cause cycling issues and give him a nice blood blister on his left hand thumb.
3
u/Riker557118 1d ago
How do you even get your thumb on the charging handle while your firing hand has purchase on the trigger?
3
u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 1d ago
Southpaw.
His left hand had the firing grip, his right hand was holding it back the magwell with his thumb resting on the charging handle.

You’d think there wouldn’t be that much force, unless he was in front of the charging handle?

Worst I've seen without injury was a triple feed, brass over bolt, except the brass over the bolt was a live round pointed the wrong direction with the primer perfectly centered on the gas tube. High end name-brand non-homebuilt AR (DD M4vSomething) with low round counts shooting offhand with a fairly new Pmag.
Worst I've seen with injury was a southpaw shooting a gen1 (recip CH) SCAR 17S get his upper lip snagged by the reciprocating charging handle and The Joker Scarred while also resulting in both a stovepipe and an uncommanded-dropped mag. Yes he was being stupid and doing that weird entry technique of stock over the shoulder, nose to ejection port technique and 100% deserved it and 100% knew better.

Yeah, I watched an older gentleman first jam his Springfield Hellcat with a mag of reman, lead round nose .380ACP. His 9mm Hellcat...
Then he proceeded to flay the skin off his thumb by gripping his support hand thumb behind the slide... Repeatedly... On at least 3 stages and after having his son show him a proper grip twice. It went from being painfully embarrassing to just shameful.

Used to be a thing with AR stocks. Which one was the pinchiest, which one was the most beard/'stache friendly.
There's a reason I have like 4 first gen UBRs...

I swear every VLTOR product ever made has pulled either my beard or mustache. Even the ones I've never used.
B5 SOPMOD or UBR gen1 or bust.

Skill issue, git gud, skrub
I have a pretty curly and insanely thick beard (thanks to being part mountain goat), and have had good luck with everything but Magpul CTRs
3
u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago
Mine's bone straight and so dense it's waterproof-submersible to 30+ minutes (as proven by taking my daughter to swim class) and VLTOR is the brand I had the most issues with. I have a couple Magpul stocks that are "okay" but UBR is love and UBR is life on everything but SBRs.

Yep. It's always puzzling. Like the car stuck on top of the telephone pole.

I spent most of last week's free time with Eileen as she settled Nancy's affairs. Last Friday I met up with her to pick up Nancy's ashes, go to the bank, meetup with the real estate agent and lawyer to sign paperwork and start moving on selling the house finally. It's finally starting to sink in this chapter is coming to a close.
I spent Saturday mostly just trying to relax. I finally went to the range and spent time trying to zero my red dot on the 10/22. There's definitely a bit of a learning curve, Moronic being that it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to turn it on because I apparently didn't read the directions as well as I thought. But then I had fun playing around and trying to figure out if it was me or the dot. It was me. I've got it set for 15 yards now until next time.
I then spent a couple hours mowing the lawn and organizing the garage enough to remove a ton of clutter from my car to prep for camping next weekend. I definitely need to get outside with my friends to enjoy the woods and a campfire. But between the range and chores my knee was feeling tired so I rested then on feeling reasonably accomplished.

Who ever invented 4am is an enemy of the people.
Took my Swiss Scmidt-Rubin 1911 to the long range bay on Friday, and it’s consistently hitting right, so now I get to figure out how to drift the front sight and put it on paper.
Also, my friend talked me into going to an airsoft game Saturday, and maybe it’s a hot take, but if I’m bleeding after being shot from halfway across the field, the chrono limit should probably be lowered

Or you're soft skinned. Hard to believe in someone living in Lite Australia but maybe we havent bullied all the chairforce outta you yet.

I’m pretty soft-skinned. Despite a blue-collar resume, I don’t have any calluses or missing digits.
I’m still firmly of the opinion that a game shouldn’t leave my beard crusty with blood though

Have you tried NOT getting shot in the face?
But fr yeah thats too hot

I seemed to only get shot in the face
I took it as a sign I was using cover effectively

Yeah the only match I've ever played at on a chronoed indoor field left me with bleeding welts on my legs. Like I understand at the same time I have questions...

With how popular it is with kids, you really gotta question if it's that important to the game to have a 325fps limit with a .32, or if we knock it down 50fps, will the game really be that impacted?

I am moronic.
Started Friday. Continued Saturday and Sunday and evidently I'm still doing it.
Got my debt card replaced Friday and got ahold of the BF. She told me the Bio Dad showed up. Cool I elected to not step on toes.
So I went to the range to zero the Axis and the Wolf at 100 yards.
Thats where the moronic begins. Started on the 50 and the 308 was within an inch at 50 already with my 150 grain Federal Fusions. Cool.
Wolf was way off got it settled at about 2-3 inches high at 50 and went to the 100.
Thats where it all went wrong. Started with the 308 and was about an inch off POI. Adjusted to it and suddenly its WAY right. Now I adjusted it right but not 4-6 inches right.
Must have pulled the shot.
Send another.
Its further right.
What the fuck, I'm on a sled the gun isn't hot and I am a better shot than this.
Reset and check the gun.
Wiggle the scope and it moves freely...
Shit.
Base came loose. The only part I didn't touch. Removed scope, retighten base, replace scope and try again. Now its right but as bad. Readjust it and get them within a half inch at 100 about 1 inch high.
Perfect.
On to the Wolf. 90 grains of Pyrodex loose under a 295 is the baseline. Send it and its just about 8 inches low. Adjust it up. And now its just slightly low.
Load up a 90 grain under a 340 bore driver.
Mild thump like a low recoil slug.
Its WAY off poi but on paper.
Adjust it.
Next shot is the same...
Assume I'm just having issues etc. Then realize theres no way the gun can be this inconsistent.
Start going over it and find the scope is suddenly about a half inch off the front of the mount...
Oh shit the mounts got loose by the heavier load.
Pull scope to readjust...
Realize theres no crossbolts in the rings....
Cue a talk with the RSO about running to get replacement rings. He said he'd watch my stuff as no one else was on the range anyway.
Mad dash and acquire Weaver Quadlock rings and Blue Loctite.
Get back and install it all.
Move to the 50 and get the gun about 3 inches high at 50 with my powerbelts.
Move to the 100 again Send it and the gun is 4 inches low and 3 inches right....
Immediately check gun and find the bases are loose.
Call it a day.
Got home and pulled it all apart. Find out that the base was installed backwards with a pair of screws because the holes don't line up properly if its backwards....
Atleast all the holes were clean and a 6 dollar trip to Ace got me 3 more screws for it and I then loctited everything down.
I guess I'll be at the range this Friday again.

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 1d ago
And now to spend a fucking hour cleaning the Wolf!
2
u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 1d ago
not quite an hour...
But read a lot on the forums and this was my process.
Partially fill bathtub with hot water. Then use the shower to run hot soapy water down the pipe. Then bore brush, flush with water, bore brush again, flush, bore brush again and flush.
So much gunk.
Then CVA wonder gel on brush and apply as directions. With a 10 min wait between. Then brush it out and flush a final time
Push clean dry patches through. Once patch comes out dry oil a patch and run it through several times.
Breech plug gets thrown in a empty pill bottle with hot soapy water and agitated multiple times. Then drain and flush with hot water.
Once clean and dry apply antiseize and place back in gun.
The only part I couldn't get out was the firing pin bushing. I hit it with Hoppes and cleaned it up well.
The gun didn't come with the wrench and I can't get a good purchase with any of my screw drivers....
I did reach out to cva and ask them about it and possibly a new foreend since the sling swivel is broken on mine.
At a min I'd like the bushing wrench though.

PSA was dead Saturday. Probably the least amount of ammo I've seen since covid hit. Plenty of guns though, but it'd be weirder if they had low stock of that.

Went shooting for the first time in a while Saturday. Haven't had much time or money due to work and having to support my little brother while the VA was taking their sweet time going through all his paperwork so he can get his disability pay. I've got something like 15 mags for my Jericho and somehow couldn't find a single one so took my Girsan Regard out and did horribly the first few mags, need to start getting out and practicing with my 22 again.

Moronic was Scheels opened up in the Austin area this weekend and I decided to go.
Wife joined me for a visit to the store yesterday and it was as expected; us and a couple thousand of our closest friends.
Aquarium was neat; Ferris wheel was groovy; and employees were helpful and very patient.
The number of gun “experts” and shotgun rackers was hilarious.
I’ll be back in a month to do some real shopping… maybe two

Finally got all the parts to convert the cheap Remington Model 11 Sportsman I bought to a standard Model 11, but realized that I’ve essentially spent the same amount as buying beater standard Model 11 at this point.
2
u/LocknLoadem 1d ago
That's how conversions and restorations often go. At least at the end, you'll still have a Model 11 and you'll have completed a fun project too.
2
u/Rjsmith5 4 1d ago
Truth. I could technically sell the Sportsman forend and come out ok. Eventually it will be SBSed. Unfortunately, I live in a state that has to get their act together before I can do that.
