So everyone knows that KareKano (His and Her Circumstances) had a disaster production that lead to its director Hideaki Anno resigning in the middle of the project, and that Redline was an insanely expensive forever-in-production movie that almost bankrupted Madhouse and got its director Takeshi Koike fired. Are there any other popular anime trivia that are completely false and literally never happened?

u/AdNecessary7641 8h ago
The idea that the 2007 Jojo's Bizzare Adventure movie never got any kind of release outside of theaters because Araki "hated it".

Ghost Stories was a flop domestically, which is why the dub team got free license to do whatever it wanted. Complete fabrication pushed by Steven Foster.
E: I'll add "Mushoku Tensei is the grandfather of isekai" too for good measure. It was just one of the more popular and downstream influential isekai of the first wave of isekai web novels to be picked up for publication alongside the likes of Re:Zero, Log Horizon, Konosuba, etc.
3
u/Korkez11 10h ago
Alice in Wonderland is the grandfather of isekai. Or Divine Comedy, depending on definition.

Odysseus would probably want to have a word, being >2000 years early to the party.
(or maybe he does not count, since his adventures in a world of gods and monsters didn't involve dying? )

Since I can't resist an excuse to mention Hibike! Euphonium:
Everyone will tell you with 100% confidence that all the "yuri bait" in the show was added by KyoAni and none of it existed in the original novel.
Except that's not true at all. KyoAni did indeed add a ton of anime original content in the first season, probably something like two thirds of it in fact; but all the yuri-bait-ish scenes between Kumiko and Reina were already in the novels.
If anything, Kumiko comes off as even more gay in the novels than the anime.

Ghost Stories being a complete flop in Japan (it wasn't), Miyazaki's "Anime was a mistake" quote (he never said that), and Madoka having single-handedly killed the magical girl genre (it's not dead and even if it were you can't blame one show for that and certainly not Madoka)
2
u/baquea 6h ago
Ghost Stories being a complete flop in Japan (it wasn't)
Likewise with Cowboy Bebop, which people make similar claims about. The original airing was a mess, with only half the episodes being broadcast, but it nevertheless ended up as one of the best-selling anime series of all-time in Japan.
2
u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 12h ago
wait, Miyazaki never said that? What was the exact quote, then?
6
u/SpaceTurtleHunter 11h ago
The original quote appears to be from the Ponyo documentary. Here's the transcript:
こういうことってさ
実際の子供をありありと思い浮かべられるかどうかなんだよ
そういう観察してないと描けない これしてない 何も見てない
自分の自我しか関心がない
そういう日常生活送ってる
日本のアニメーションはね観察によって基づいてないほとんど
人間の観察が嫌いな人間がやってんだよ
だからオタクの巣になるんだよ
Translation by soranews:
You see, whether you can draw like this or not, being able to think up this kind of design [Miyazaki simply said "for things like this", this is the translator's interpretation of what he meant by it], it depends on whether or not you can say to yourself, "Oh, yeah, girls like this exist in real life".
If you don’t spend time watching real people, you can’t do this, because you’ve never seen it.
Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves.
Almost all Japanese animation is produced with hardly any basis taken from observing real people, you know.
It’s produced by humans who can’t stand looking at other humans.
And that’s why the industry is full of otaku!
6
u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 12h ago
iirc, in the source of the quote he was basically criticizing modern anime creators for being more inspired by previous anime than real people and experiences or something like that

u/Korkez11 6h ago
It's only tangentially related to anime but after reading some LNs I understand that editor from Tsuki ga Kirei who said that talentless writers can still make a buck as LN authors. LNs feel like bad amateurish fanfics where 90% are wooden dialogues and 10% are barebone descriptions.
6
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 6h ago edited 5h ago
Even LN authors agree; see Oregairu's author writing a show about seiyuu where the protagonist and her friend take jabs at the LN publishing industry, the source author of the series they're on and LNs only being propped up by marketable-to-otaku waifu designs.
E: as for them feeling like amateurish fanfics, that's because they kind of are. Narou used to be a site people wrote fanfics on (as well as the odd original series like Log Horizon) before those were banned and people were forced to write original fiction, which they still approach it the same as fics. Narou isekai as a whole is kind of the omegaverse of Japanese fantasy.

I'm finally caught up with everything (that seemed good to me), Smoking behind the supermarket was the last one!
It's pretty fun (for a 'chill' anime) and I like the girl well enough, but damn, what I would give for it to be about literally anything but smoking;
- Eating gummy bears behind the supermarket with you!
- Playing marbles behind the supermarket with you!
- Opening Pokemon boosters behind the supermarket with you!
- Pickpocketing passersby behind the supermarket with you!
So many different opportunities!
So I guess I'm now either gonna watch the movies I passed on (Shiboyugi, Zombieland, Madoka if I can watch the other stuff first, the Prison one - is it any good?)...
Or check out the rest of the seasonal trash so I can level my dropped stat on MAL!
1
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 13m ago
I'd probably watch any of those anime concepts you listed, especially the Pokémon boosters one, but I just have zero interest in an anime about smoking. I've actually dropped one show in the past because the MC was an obnoxious smoker (not respecting the no-smoke areas and acting like that made him cool, etc).
6
u/elkedgar 2h ago
Felt like I actually, finally became an anime watcher this summer. Not that I've never watched it, but it was more occasional, usually 90's OVA type stuff, then I'd occasionally drop in to try out a series every couple of years. Knocked out a bunch of stuff this year, made myself an AniList to keep track (I already do this with the games I play!) and actually have a list of stuff I'm interested in watching coming up over winter/2027. Exciting!

Sunao Katabuchi's short film, FukuFuku Map, for Fukushima Prefecture is now online with English subs.
Speaking of Katabuchi; looks like we might get some new footage for his upcoming movie, The Mourning Children, the coming weeks. Really looking forward to it, especially with the amount of research that went into the movie. Wouldn't expect anything less from Katabuchi though. The man does love the little details.

Finished Victoria of Many Faces. It felt like a nice breath of fresh air for the main trio. The 2 adults act like adults and the kid acts like a kid. Granted Nonna's tomboyness is coming out thanks to Vicky.
Very nice story. It did feel after the first few episodes there was only so much budget they had. So it is a good thing they only had 9 episodes to work with. It is nice to know an S2 is in the works, which I didn't expect.
7/10 I would say. People who love slice-of-life shows should definitely check it out.
2
u/Organic_Machine_2324 1h ago
A good 6/10 for me.
- Good Female Lead
- Nonna is great
- The action is rare but great
- The Prison Arc was sensational
The qualms on why it’s not higher:
- Needed far more incidents like the Ball and Prison to show off her strength and combat
- Lacked stakes as it felt like the Organisation fight with her was completely avoided
- The ML Jeff was a huge desperate beg and i can tolerate him but i don’t like him and think he doesn’t deserve them
1
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 19m ago
Yea I think this is more or less where I land on it.
Kinda wished we knew there was a S2 from the start, maybe then I would've invested more interest in it since I was kinda expecting this to be a one and done deal *because* it only had 9 episodes. Was totally not expecting a S2 and kinda fucked myself over by assuming it wouldn't get one.

been watching wangan midnight, because I befriended a car lover who wants us to drive around wangan at night (don't worry, there will be zero speeding lol more about vibes)
I'm about 8 episodes in. I'm quite enjoying the show. it's able to sell the "we are all obsesed with cars" melodrama. the bgm is doing some real heavy lifting though. the bgm is god tier. it's so good. it's the bgm of a show about like perverse eldritch creations fighting god or something and it's about people ruining their lives to drive fast on a highway in tokyo. it's great

I'm starting a campaign to load the MC from Love Unseen into a rocket to fire it into the sun. Who's with me?
2
u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 4h ago
What he do this time?
6
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 4h ago
[Love Unseen] He keeps stalking the girl in the hospital despite how many times she tells him to leave her tf alone, and after listening to her cry her eyes out about her anxiety and regret as she's at the mercy of chemo to give her more time, he hands her paper and crayons and tells her to draw a picture for a fireworks show in two months so they can go together. Like, wtf dude?
6
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 3h ago
I'm not keeping up with this one, but isn't this the one where the premise is that she's blind? Why is [response to your spoiler]drawing a picture or seeing fireworks even an option?
6
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 3h ago
In defense of the fireworks, that's established early on that she likes the sound and feel of a fireworks show despite not being able to see them, and they've done a bunch of fireworks stuff together leading up to this. The drawing, though, I don't get that one.

It's dogshit writing when it comes down to it. The author has created a situation where the only reasonable move to take would be to leave her be, but if he does that, there's no story. So instead we have to watch the guy and his friends act like complete fucking weirdos because [Love Unseen] she didn't come to school for five days. Most people would just assume she had the flu or something, not sprint down to the hospital to invade her privacy. Don't even get me going on how gross and manipulative it is to sign up as volunteers with the pediatric ward just to keep tabs on her. That's just obscene.

Why isn't there any legal avenue for me to watch Tanaka-kun is Always Listless? The world is unfair and it's been forever since I've seen it. Super chill show with a great sense of humor.
Anyways, if you haven't watched Please Excuse My Younger Brothers from this season, please give it a shot. Ito is a ridiculously strong protagonist who keeps cracking me up in every episode. Naomi Oozora also played Kanshi in Witch Watch and Tamamo Cross from Umamusume, love seeing her get a main role and knocking it out of the park. The overall plot of the show isn't groundbreaking, but it's delivered with excellent energy from both the VAs and production.
2
u/entelechtual 11h ago
Why isn't there any legal avenue for me to watch Tanaka-kun is Always Listless?
As is usually the case, the answer is that it was on Hidive, and when Hidive licenses a title, you can bet that within 6-24 months it’ll disappear without any notice. Even when, like Tanaka-kun, it’s a Sentai title which is basically in-house.
It’s a shame because I really liked the show, I wasn’t too keen on it in the beginning but it quickly grew on me.
1
u/Shmappii 10h ago
I have such a love/hate relationship with HiDive. Their catalog always has just enough stuff that I like, but the interface and frequent loss of various titles is mind-boggling.

Just recommended a band on YT called F-272, only have one song so far, “Diorama”.
Heard the song and immediately liked it. I loved Elfensjon and this has very similar vibe. Turns out they’re from the same group as Girls Band Cry? Not too sure, didn’t explore further. Anyway, looking forward for more releases from them.

Currently watching Waiting in the Summer and I think I'll drop it at episode 7. I get that I'm not really in that target age anymore, but it's pretty bad. All the characters are horny and jealous of each other and there's an alien and nudist for some reason, and I guess the MMC and FMC is in love with each other because they're MC? Stuff is happening just to happen.
2
5
u/Korkez11 3h ago
I think people who don't understand that Love Unseen MC isn't malicious jerkass but [Love Unseen] a guy who means well but fumbles on every step because he doesn't fucking know how to treat the girl he loves when she a) doesn't remember him, and b) is dying of cancer (that's not something vast majority of population are prepared for by the age of 20, you know) are very unserious, unempathetic and un-smart people.
[Love Unseen] I'm not even talking about his family situation which makes him desperate to not lose yet another person close to him
9
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 3h ago
7
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3h ago
(As I said in another comment, I haven't watched enough of LU to have a strong opinion about the MC, so I'm only gonna speak in general here, but) I'm gonna use that as an opportunity to go on a rant, because YES, 100%;
In fact, I'd go as far as saying that (The opposite of this) is something that always irked me in fanbases/people who defend shows/characters, the idea that "There is a reason!" therefore you can't criticize something/someone...
The reason might make you UNDERSTAND the character/actions;
It does not mean you can't judge or hate them for it.
It's so often the case in TV shows, soon as 'a reason' is mentioned suddenly you can't debate the action, it's all "BUT THE REASON!"
Sometimes it doesn't even matter if "the reason" makes sense, as long as they gave a reason. You can't use critical thinking to assess the reason. You just have to accept it, because they gave it to you.
5
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 2h ago
Occasionally it's something good where I see what's going on and hate the character but love the show for doing that, but more often it's along the lines of "You wrote yourself into a corner and I see what you're doing to advance the plot but this is just bad and now I hate everyone involved." Sometimes I feel like Nick Fury in The Avengers.
3
u/theangryeditor 3h ago
We gotta fire someone into the sun and I'd rather not do it to the blind girl
5
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3h ago
I haven't watched enough of it to know what it looks like now, but the way it's presented changes a lot in cases like these;
I think I talked about it earlier in the series, but the MC in [title]Katawa Shoujo is like that at first, becauses it's the same kind of situation (probably even worse for this one given the MC's condition as well), doesn't know how to deal with it, so sometimes he slips up and 'misses' something, and sometimes it's the opposite, he tries to 'do too much'...
But it's kind of a learning opportunity, he stumbles, gets better, he misses something, doesn't miss it the next time, he tries too much, learns that he doesn't need to 'force' anything, just act normal, etc...
So it shows yeah, it's okay to makes mistakes, you've never dealt with a situation like that so no one expects you to get it right on day 1. But at some point you should probably get it right. Or at least do better.
So I don't know enough about the discourse to know where Love Unseen's MC stands, but seeing people complain about that 3/4 the way into the season, makes me wonder whether the stagnation is an issue, moreso than 'making a mistake'.
2
u/theangryeditor 3h ago
[title]
Many mistakes were made indeed. Ah...the days of my youth...like the fresh scent of lemons
3
1
u/Korkez11 3h ago
It looks like you haven't read spoilers in my comment, so - no, stagnation is not an issue because FMC herself is... not stagnant, so to say.

Honestly when you think about it. [Love Unseen]Imagine the girl you finally fall in love with for the first time now disappears on you for a week. Now you learn she says she forgot about it and now says she only has 6 months to live. I can't even imagine being in that scenario. I can't even imagine being in that scenario or what I would do.
[Love Unseen]Obviously he isn't handling it great. But it would be inhuman if he could handle all of that all of a sudden. Like you said he is only 20.
[Love Unseen]If you think about it, it would have been better if he hadn't learned that she was in the hospital because then he could just think she was maybe living good just without him. Now she knows that her cancer came back and she has a low shot of surviving it. Either he gives up on her and you can only imagine the pain he would feel. Or he does what he is doing now.
It isn't a black-or-white situation here.

u/zambonijesus 4h ago
The best parts of Monster, for me, have been where it feels most influenced by David Lynch. Relatively early on there's an explicit Twin Peaks reference, but more subtly in [Episode 53]there's a whole thing with Eva having a reoccurring memory involving sandwiches and a picnic with Tenma and in particular there's a scene where she is in a park in the present day and there's a couple kissing, another laughing and then a boy offers her a sandwich. It all just reads very Lynchian in tone and style to me.
Probably my hottest take is that it's at its best when Tenma and Johan aren't on the screen.
2
u/IndependentMacaroon 2h ago
I guess that adds another TV show besides The Fugitive (the original 1960s show, surprisingly great though I am just picking the best episodes) to check out before I rewatch!
2
u/zambonijesus 2h ago
I'm a huge David Lynch stan and love all of Twin Peaks, but for the purposes of Monster you only need the far less weird first season.

Just binged all of Fancy Lala and man after all of those episodes, I was not expecting the anime to end in such a sad bittersweet note, it was the same as Capricious Orange Road, after all those 50+ episodes of rom com shenanigans, the anime smacks you rigth on the feels with that last episode, I cant think of any newer anime in the past few years that take such a drastic turn in the last few episodes, but would be interested to check them out if anyone knows any.

You should enjoy the clip and also watch the anime!
As for the contest, yeah it sucks that someone botted it. But that shouldn't sour you on Kurumi as a character. Unless she did it herself of course. But then, didn't you like twisted girls?

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4h ago

u/I_Cognito 3h ago
Yeah, but there is no way someone as innocent and mentally stable as Kurumi would ever do something like that.

Too late. I'll never watch her show for it.

You do you, but this seems silly to me. If someone botted a character you like to the top of one of these contests, would you suddenly dislike that character? Or even the anime the character is from?

Hello everyone, does anyone have any recommendations for bad mecha anime? I'm talking "fun" bad, not "mediocre" bad.
Something along the lines of Cross Ange or Valvrave.
1
u/Infodump_Ibis 4h ago
IDK those shows to so to throw out a YMMV maybe Knights of Ramune (aka VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fresh). The franchise in general gets hornier at it goes on and this is the end point where the girls can finally pilot the robot...they need to be naked to do so. Legendary hero Lamunes is finally acting like a modern isekai protagonist (even though this was the 90s)...by sexually assaulting the girls rather than a taunt and tsundere dynamic for boy and girl, respectively.
That franchise in general depending on your tastes might be considered bad but it's usually middling to good fun in a kids anime way (that's the rails it hit in trying to hit an older audience) including some very gimmicky episodes and setting (e.g. an episode of VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire had bodyswaps). IDK if the CR still have the Discotek sublicense for those.

u/overuseofdashes 3h ago edited 1h ago
They are sort of like Code geass season 2 but with more sex stuff. They are shows with good production value, are in delightfully poor taste and have stories that boarder on the ridiculous in a fun way.
1
u/overuseofdashes 3h ago
My only suggestions are the obvious ones, guilty crown and darling in franxx. People say Cross Ange is very Gundam SEED adjacent so maybe that is worth a shot.

Happy September, everyone! What anime did you finish watching in August, and what anime do you hope to finish watching this month?
As for me, I finished:
Dragon Ball
Gintama Movie 3: Yoshiwara in Flames
Michiko & Hatchin
Napping Princess
NieA_7
One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island + Movie 7: The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle + TV Special 4: The Detective Memoirs of Chief Straw Hat Luffy + Episode of Alabasta - Prologue + Movie 8: Episode of Alabasta - The Desert Princess and the Pirates
The House of the Lost on the Cape
The Wonderland
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
You can see my thoughts on these shows over on CDF.
And for September, I have plans for:
My Summer 2026 seasonals
Hyouka
Probably Welcome to the Ballroom to knock that off my on-hold list after finishing YGO GX?
