This is the time of the year when the Canadian ASL Association (CASLA) looks for new members and reminds existing members that their membership renewals are due.

The primary mission of the CASLA is to support the Canadian ASL Open (CASLO) each year. We have been doing that for over thirty years.

There are several reasons to join CASLA. First, the CASLA supports an annual, reliable, well run Canadian ASL tournament, that one can plan to attend months ahead of time. Second, being a CASLA member allows one to bring the tournament to your city. Third, all CASLA members have a say in the format of the tournament and in which city the tournament will be held. Lastly, the CASLA helps the ASL hobby grow in Canada by helping to connect players.

The Canadian ASL Open has a documented and well established tournament format (see https://canadianasl.org for information) that makes every round important and gives all players a final ranking of their performance in relation to other participants. The CASLA has a charter that contains the tournament documentation; the charter also describes the Virtual Meeting procedure and members’ privileges.

Our membership drive will last until September 15. We start the annual virtual meeting (using Discord chat software) soon after that. People may join after September 15, but they may miss part of the meeting.

Running the CASLO sometimes takes more money than one can obtain through tournament registration fees; the CASLA membership fees exist to fund our web site and to have a cash reserve to pay for excess tournament expenses when the registration fees do not cover everything. Being a paid member also entitles one to a discount on registration for the Canadian ASL Open. Foreign players may join the CASLA, but the tournament must be held in a Canadian city.

A proposal to host the Canadian ASL Open must include a hotel meeting room of at least 800 square feet (more is better) on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The hotel should have a restaurant and bar, or be within easy walking distance of restaurants. Usually, the member submitting the successful proposal also becomes the tournament director that year, but that is not a requirement. The tournament director and his staff make the scenario selections, put together the scenario packages for participants, and a few other things.

To date, this tournament has been held in Calgary, Fredericton, Montreal, Ottawa, Victoria and Winnipeg.

The CASLA membership fee is twenty dollars CAD per year.

Once again 10 brave players assault the boards in a Schwerpunkt scenario.

This one features a small number of defending Germans supported by a Brummbar. Personally, I do not like this vehicle as I consider it overpowered compared to other armoured large calibre guns. Not a large target nor limited ammunition smells of German bias to me but hey ho.

Evening/afternoon all. I just pre-ordered the v2 binder and stuff.However the cost has not been taken out yet. is this normal? is the pre-order strictly to give them #'s?

I'm fine either way just was expcting to get charged at the time.

I have the original boxes, and most are in very good condition.

What are my options?

I speculate that the mere mention of "Kursk" is enough to send the average ASL player into parioxisms ... making tank noises ... imagining the Flight of the Valhyrie as massed Russian tank formations advance across the steppes ... into range of Tigers and Panthers. I don't know about you, but I like AFV's and the absence from a scenario is enough to get me to move on. So, when I realized there was a Kursk HASL module, I admit it, I reflexively bought it. Imagine my surprise. Where's the tanks? Specifically where are the Tigers and Panthers and Elephants and more????

Ok, therapy's done wonders ... I can talk about it now. I've even played a Ponyri scenario and found it quite enjoyable. I am however still seriously curious ... why is it that when an intrepid group began to develop an HASL representation of Kursk, they chose what they chose? I'm certain there are many things for me to learn here!

And will there ever be a companion HASL module? Say for example a campaign focused on the village of Verkhopenye and Hill 242.2, where Grossdeutschland Division and Panzer Regiment 29 pushed to secure a crossing over the Pena River? Or, perhaps Oktiabrshy State Farm where Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) and the 5th Guards Tank Army collided?

I'm looking for advice on getting back into ASL after an over 30 year hiatus. I played a lot of SL/ASL when I was much younger, then life happened, and I am just starting to look at getting back into it. Not sure if I really will, but I've played a couple of solitaire scenarios with what I have and it's enough to make it so I'm going to take it further and see if this is something I'm really going to get into.

I have a lot of very old material:

SL: Original game, CoI, CoD and GI-AoV

ASL: Rules, BV, Paratrooper, many issues of General, ASL Annuals, etc. Even the first issue of Critical Hit...

All of this is original edition AH.

If this experiment is successful, I'm going to want to play live and get my ass kicked, so I'm almost certain that I want to get modern rules. I see three ways forward. There are probably more, feel free to suggest:

1. Go the ASL-SK route, although this doesn't interest me all that much. It's simpler, but I never minded the chrome, and it turns out I remember just enough of the rules to be dangerous.

2. Get the current rules, and use everything else I have adapting as necessary. Going this route means I have a large number of scenarios, map boards and counters with minimal spend, but I won't know for sure if they're still useful.

3. Get the current rules + V2 BV and see how far I go from there.

So, any suggestions are appreciated. I am not interested in playing live against long time players until I have a reasonable (mis)understanding of the rules, so I'll leave it here for now.

Also, is this the best subreddit for rules questions that I'll invariably have?

I love all the variety with ASL but there is a lot of maps, counters, and scenarios and it is hard to recall what goes where and with who. Has anyone compiled a excel or even a database that lists everything (including journals and smaller scenarios)

I would rather not recreate the wheel bug will if needed.

This week we gave a couple of new players joining us (and by us I mean everyone but yours truly who has to work) in a Lone Canuck scenario featuring a Canadian attack in 1944.

Episode 6 of Battle Diaries is live! This one documents the intense operational puzzle to relieve the pressure on Thulin.

We were facing a severe equipment and supply shortage under heavy Allied pressure. While pericotest, shini, and kerubi were casually arguing over the radio about the cheesiest gear in the game, the front lines were buckling.

After a fun run in the Panzer 38(t) and a hilariously doomed sapper run (charging an Allied tank with a satchel charge across an open field makes you feel like a digital Don Quixote tilting at steel windmills), Vongsters decided it was time to change gears.

We threw together a demolition run with slpr and z15, cleared out the undefended Le Quesnoy and Bavay firebases, and launched a direct counter-attack into Valenciennes to put the Allies on their back foot.

From Sphinx08 hunting down rogue Shermans inside our staging depot, to joker1977 and me trying to rush an enemy-held bunker, it was a beautiful mess. Even though our grand offensive ultimately failed, the macro-strategy worked perfectly to draw the pressure away and save Thulin.

Sorry for being a bit lax in posting these. The Friday Night Fights go on with a slightly curtailed group. Only 10 playing this week. A clash from the best of friends that features Americans asleep in their beds when the Germans fall upon them.

I played this one years ago at a tournament but had to leave before the end which was a pity as with 2 turns to go I'd generated 3 heroes. Manning mmgs they turned stone buildings into open ground....

Is anything known about the preorder timeline (the process is a lot less intuitive than GMT)? How along ago was it satisfied?

Played Yanks updated version of this scenario originally from Paratrooper with a new(ish) player yesterday. I've been playing on and off 20 years but am not 100% Rules fluent.

So by turn 3 I had taken and spiked the Gun but only had 3 CVP while Germans had 5 CVP so not an instant win by my reading. Within a turn though Americans were able to secure 6 CVP total (not including prisoners) we played the American won as soon as they had more CVP. Now I'm questioning myself due to the wording. Did I play it right? I think the outcome was inevitable as I had the Fortified bldg surrounded (enough for Encirclement anyways)

Von Arnim Unloads — ASL Starter Kit Scenario S107

Near Sedjenane, Tunisia — 26 February 1943

Three players gathered around a sprawling hex map to refight one of the lesser-known engagements of the North Africa campaign. The scenario depicts Division von Manteuffel's Operation AUSLADUNG, a German thrust in northern Tunisia designed to exploit the weakening of Allied lines following the disaster at Kasserine Pass.

On the Axis side, one player — dressed for the occasion in an Italian Bersaglieri uniform, complete with the corps' iconic plumed helmet — directed the Italian forces, while his partner in a Captain America t-shirt commanded the Germans. The Bersaglieri costume was an inspired choice: that elite light infantry corps fought extensively in North Africa and would have been right at home at Sedjenane. Facing them across the table, the author controlled the Allied defense: elements of the French Corps franc d'Afrique and the British 139th Brigade, 46th Division.

The Allied Defense Holds

The French and British won a hard-fought defensive victory, retaining control of the critical tN4 hex area when the final turn ended. The key to the Allied success was discipline and terrain — the French in particular proved maddeningly elusive, falling back through orchards, threading between village buildings, and melting into open fields just as German units closed in for the kill. The Germans burned turn after turn chasing them down, never quite landing the decisive blow needed to clear the objective zone.

The Allied mortar section was the unsung hero of the battle. Firing from a protected position, it provided long-range suppression that disrupted German formations and forced costly rerouting of the Axis advance. Against infantry in the open, even a single mortar can dictate the tempo of an attack — and here it did exactly that.

The Italians fought with determination, pushing forward and actually cutting the road — a genuine tactical achievement. But it was too little, too late. With the German main effort stalled and the clock running out, the Italian gains on the flank couldn't compensate for the failure to break through to the objective.

Named leaders on both sides — the German 9-1 Lt. Tichy, French 8-1 Sgt. Argent, German 7-0 Col. Pfeiffer — fought hard, but in the end the terrain and French elusiveness favored the defense. Operation AUSLADUNG failed, just as it did historically.

A well-played Allied victory — and the Bersaglieri uniform was a fantastic touch, even if its wearer ended up on the losing side.

This is from ASL 2 Mila 18. Nick is ZOB and I'm Waffen-SS. As a reminder, LABOR -1 represents the pile of weapons from dead Germans that the ZOB can pick up to be better units. The Guys in L6 have a LABOR -1 in their hex. Two opportunities to recover. Both times? 6. Also, those ZOB guys in there got there via the sewers. Nick rolled poorly and I was able to reinforce the melee and then get some more precious CVP.
Now I have to make an effort to mop up all those row house locations between Q2 and M4. That's 6 Victory Buildings for me to mop up!

How do the rules prevent players from moving their counters in deliberate response two units they shouldn't be able to see because they have been " camouflaged"?

Does anyone happen to have a clean PDF version (not scanned) of the Starter Kit rulebooks? I know MMP provides #4, but I can't seem to find the others. I own the physical games, but having these others in PDF would be helpful. (I know I can just disregard certain rules from #4, but I'm trying to ease a friend into things.)

So, I'm new to ASL. I have ASLSK #1 and am waiting for preorders for the others.

However, I saw that MMP has announced a preorder for the binder version which just seems more useful to read, at least initially, than the smaller text of the pocket books.

What do y'all think? Preorder the binder? Fuck it and go with the pocket books? Stick to ASLSK?
