My dream is to have a pencil sketch, ink the line art, and then put colored pencil on top. But I can't find a black ink or pen that won't smudge when I am putting a lot of layers of colored pencil onto the paper and blending it thoroughly. I've tried a bunch different liquid inks (Windsor & Newton, Noodler's Ink, Dr. PH Martin, Higgins) and some pigment liners (Micron, Uni Ball). Any suggestions?

I love using markers with a brush tip to create expressive portraits. However, I miss the ability to create soft, blended shadows, like I’m able to do with charcoal or pastels. Can somebody please point me in the right direction? The brush tip is a must because of the varying thickness.

Hoping to get some more information on these sketchbooks, are they good for watercolour? What media do you usually use in them?

My boyfriend is not into a lot of artistic endeavors, but he recently started collecting pens/fine-tip markers. He also bought a stereograph kit and has been really enjoying relaxing at night by drawing some stereograph designs. For a while, he was learning/practicing some calligraphy as well.

He bought himself a multi-color package of Sharpie fine-tip creative markers. He also buys some loose Zebra glitter gel pens whenever we go to the art store. (I did read the sub rules and hope this is okay to ask - my intention is to upgrade to better quality materials if they exist.)

Is he already picking up the highest quality materials, or are there some fun, special pen brands/kits that I could get him for his birthday? Anything similar in experience to a stereograph that would let him draw fun shapes or patterns without drawing freehand?

Are thin pens ever appropriate for adult coloring books, or would that be better with larger markers/colored pencils that can cover more area in one stroke? I think he really enjoys the feel of pens and thin-tip markers, but not sure what other guided art endeavors they are good for.

I'm an art student that has to carry a 25" x 30" portfolio across campus every day. Large pads, a large clipboard and various supplies. It would be much easier if I could wear it like a backpack. Is there such a thing?

I would like to by a large ceramic pain pallet with tiny wells. The current 2 I have are to big. One is round with multiple sizes(some of the smaller ones are perfect). The others one is rectangular with larger wells (smallest is half the length of a brick lighter and rectangular largest almost the length of the lighter w rom to spare widths wise. I’m looking for something about the width of a dime(maybe slightly smaller) and deep. But with like 30 wells. Any advice/suggestions?

Hi I’m looking for some new acrylic markers because the ones I have are cheap and don’t work very well. I’m leaning towards ENMY but I want to hear your guys’ thoughts. What I want in a marker:

Please let me know if there’s a brand that’s more suitable for me than ENMY. And if you have experience with these markers, I’d love to know any stand out pros and/or cons. Thank you.

When I do it while the acrylic is still wet, It looks too dark and muddy, when I try with my finger or a brush with water, it doesn't look blender it looks muddy or too dark

It looks good like in a cell shading style but there aren't many tutorials in that style

Hey everyone! I mostly use acrylics and have a big ol' jar as my water pot, and I'm sure we all know a lot of the time even after vigorously whacking your brush about, the pot water needs to be wiped off and is sometimes still tinted

Currently being lazy and using the other half of a used tissue as I have a small project to do for a gift. I'm a huge eco person, hence my old jar is older than my teenage niece... but for drying my brush, my own hand isn't great and I don't like throwing away so many bits of kitchen roll (paper towels), so has anyone who uses acrylics used a thicker cloth you can wash?

I know it's pretty good for watercolours, as it's all water based. I'm also worried the acrylic paint on said cloth would then get into the water? Microplastic contribution, yippee

Alternatively, any tools you know/use that are better at getting the paint off in the first place? I tend to do miniatures or painting on shoes so most brushes I use are very small

Hi! I always see people draw on felt on Instagram and tik tok and they say they use gel pens, I heard more specifically Languo from someone but I have not had any success. I use stiff felt and have tried ironing for short periods of time but have not had any luck!!? Is it because of the brand of gel pens? Is it because of the type of felt or am I just using the wrong materials or doing the wrong steps in general? If anyone knows anything I would love to read about it thank you!

I'm a comic artist that has been granted a budget of EUR1000 on art supplies for myself as part of an art scholarship. I've only ever bought highlighter markers from the stationary store, color inks ages ago and still havent run out, and an occasional sketchbook. Hi! I need help looking for the sketchbook/notebook or at least the template of what seems to be comic/manga vertical thumbnails.

There's like a header that just says Project on the top right, with the thumbnail box printed as well as like another inner rectangle box of where the actual art would be; there is a third box where you can right in what number the page is.

another very specific detail, Is that in side the inner thumbnail box has light blue lines for I'm assuming composition, like a straight line and then dash lines next to it.

the closest I found was the manga storyboard sketchbook but I am looking for ONLY the thumbnail area TwT

I was looking for information about color mixing / refilling / hacking Royal Talens Ecoline brush pens to create new custom colors and didn't find anything on the Internet. So I'm sharing what I experimented with.

I've been experimenting with shifting colors of some of my Ecoline brush pens. The main reason is that I was missing dark muted greens for my art and I wanted to create custom colors.

I took brand new pens (unused, full of the original ink) in various colors (medium or light value) and I created a few custom colors by adding more Ecoline ink to the pen. Ecoline comes in brush pens, duo tip pens and ink bottles. I used the brush pens and the set of Ecoline ink that comes with 10 different colors (you can also use open stock, of course). The pens are refillable so it's easy to open them and the ink bottles come with an eyedropper so it's not too messy.

So far, I created the following custom brush pens: two dark muted greens, a rosy beige / light terracotta, a muted amber and two muted dark reds using full pens (i.e. new, unused pens). I put most ink drops directly in the barrel, and a few on the brush tip (just to experiment; this can be messy though and the tip needs time to absorb the ink).

In my experience, shifting the original color most often takes more drops than I thought it would. Of course, that depends on your original pen color and your target color. AND it is absolutely necessary to let the pen rest for the new ink to diffuse (at least a day in my experience). When I think of it, it makes sense: I didn't premix the inks I added to each pen and the new and old inks in the pen have to mix all by themselves. Diffusion in the fiber core in the pen and in the brush tip takes time. It might go faster with a pen that has been used and is "thirsty" but I have only experimented with new / full pens.

For example:

- Starting with a gray 706, I added 18 drops of green 600 and created a dark muted green

- Starting with a beige 420, I added 7 drops of magenta 337 and 13 drops of light orange 236 and created a rosy beige / light terracotta

It's all trial and error and the color mixing has to be adjusted according to the original color of the pen and the target color.

I added few drops at as time (up to 12) and let the pen lie flat for a day before testing it on paper and adding more ink. I decided to be conservative and add ink little by little, gradually shifting the color. It takes more time since I have to let the pen rest, but that way, I don't end up with a completely messed up color.

I want to paint these silicon water balls to look like Pokeballs for my son’s bday party. The suggestions I’ve had so far are Plasti dip, which is pretty expensive, or mixing some paint with caulk from the hardware - would the latter work? Any other ideas?

I used to find this multi-media paper block at art supply stores, its similar to watercolor paper blocks with the edges sealed except it was "paper" thick enough to stand up on its own, more like a board. I can't find it anywhere now and no one knows what I'm talking about, even my old roommate who used to buy them too! I feel like I'm going nuts haha. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to find something like this?
