one of the proudest days of my life was when I was ushering around an old, cantankerous, German woman with a lifelong history of emotional abuse and withholding with her children. 'You're a very good driver,' she said with conviction. You couldn't get me off that high for a month.
the sad part was, I couldn't tell her daughter [my friend] that her mom actually complimented me, it would have crushed her because she'd never received a compliment from her mother in her life.
When bringing our new cat home for the first time, my wife was holding the carrier telling our fluffy baby that ‘everything is okay, you’re safe, semghost is a really good driver’ and I still glow when I think about it
A lot of those people still don't realize it when they ride with someone who's actually so much better. It's smooth, there are no close calls - and the less competent person thinks they're just as good or better.
Side effect of this is struggling to exist in a car when not in the driver's seat. So many borderline Yolo moves where I'm pressing my feet against the invisible brake because the driver is just assuming nobody will do anything unexpected like change lanes or hit the brakes.
My sister in law is one of those people who does not think about braking softly or anything. Every time we pull into a driveway, I practically slam my head against the window because she does it so quickly and I’m being jerked back and forth super hard. 😭
It’s so weird because I always want to provide the smoothest ride when I’m driving.
One of the best things I did as a young driver was take a defensive driving course. It built decades of habits & skill to watch for an anticipate other drivers’ actions on the roads.
i drive like I'm a below average driver. I've never been in an accident but that's just pure luck. I assume Everyone else is on their phones and not paying attention, i think that keeps me safe.
I take extra precautions when I come across those drivers taking their pregnant wives/partners to the hospital i.e. driving so fast they are a danger to everyone around them.
