Rough day today and it got me thinking how do you know you're the problem and not the kids? I'm a second year in upper primary and I always feel like it's my fault for bad behaviour and learning outcomes and people say it's the kids but really how long can that excuse work you know?

Hi, I am just finishing up my MTeach secondary in Vic and it looks like a lot of the vacancies, at least for my methods, are outer suburbs or regional/rural. I would have to drive an hour to get to some of these places and that sounds exhausting.

Is this sort of commute worth it for a grad job? Moving isn't really in the cards right now.

Hi all, sorry for a rather specific question but I’m hoping some teachers more experienced than I could help. I was wondering if there was a significant push from phonics to whole language reading education at some point in the 2000s-2010s. I’ve seen more and more videos and discussions from teachers across the world about the literacy levels and teaching methods, and I am trying to figure out a timeline.
I’m 26, and I remember learning phonics (although this may have been due to my parents and not school, I cannot recall). I teach high schoolers and have seen that their simple reading (and writing!) skills are far behind what I’d expect and was wondering if perhaps phonics was the missing link.

Applying to their UNSW’s masters of teaching program (secondary) and they didn’t have an option for the 100 word statement. Weird because they didnt say anything about it being removed.

Is expecting to be able to come to work and teach without tables or chairs being flung across the room, or pencils being thrown in anger expecting too much? Is this what teaching is these days? I can’t figure out if it’s the school, or if I’m genuinely just not cut out to be a teacher anymore. I’m primary if that makes a difference? The stress and anxiety are killing me slowly.

I quit an ongoing contract ( public school )and if I start next year again do I start with my first year pay scale again? Or do I start wherever I left ?

Hypothetical scenario, and I know there is a lot of things to consider to actually make this work.

But lets assume the following:
- Teachers work 4 days.
- Salary is the same.
- Teachers can choose the Monday or Friday (lets add Wednesday too, some people like the mid week break).
- You can use it as a day off, or a WIH day (for planning).
- You still get your usual planning time throughout the week.
- The kids still go to school for 5 days a week, and all their electives / extra curricular activities are crammed into that day.
- You wouldn't have to plan the 5th day for other teachers.
- High school teachers; this would work fantastically, because the student/class timetable could just reflect based on available teachers.
- Another idea I just had; maybe high schools could enter the work force on the 5th day.
- For this scenario lets assume the rest of the country conforms (parents with jobs, etc).

This is a perfect world of course. But I wonder if it would solve a lot of issues regarding burn out, well being, and having time to work on planning and other things.
I'd also be interested to hear peoples thoughts one whether school IN GENERAL could be 4 days a week (the students have a 4 day week)

When do most jobs for the following year get advertised? Worried I may have already missed the boat for next year.

I'm a new teacher, this is my second term of teaching. My position at my current school has made me feel a bit overwhelmed, and since my contract is ending with them, I'm planning on taking term 4 to do CRT.

Do you guys think this is a viable option? I am still interviewing at places for new contracts and positions for next year but nothing is set in stone yet.

What I’m looking into is seeing if any schools in my local area need a teacher and working in a different school in the same area for 12 months. I thought it was called transfer of duties (different to lwop)but can’t find any info with a quick google.

I’m coming up to 3 years in my permanent position in the first semester next year.

I don’t know if this can even happen but I really feel like I need a change, it’s been a terrible 2 weeks and just want to see what my options are.

I left teaching on workcover several months ago after developing ptsd due to a completely unmanageable class and near hourly violent outbursts. I’ve been trying to find a new career path but it’s been so hard. All I want is to be able to teach and now I feel like I can’t.

Every once in a while I have a good day and I think I can just suck it up and go back and then I open my laptop to apply for jobs and completely panic. I want to start a family soon and I feel like this has completely ruined my life.

How can I return? Should I?

If you’ve managed to move on completely, how did you face the uncertainty and the feelings of inadequacy?

Most of all, how can I trust any workplace to keep me safe again after several bad experiences?

Year 8 boys- genuinely, what do I even do!?

First year teacher here (24f) and I am consistently struggling with year 8 boys and just getting them to at the very least, stop making animal noises and swearing at each other. I have tried pretty much everything.
You’ve been disruptive in the class? Detention
You won’t follow instructions? Rubbish pick up
You’re rude and unsafe to others? Call home and school behaviour process

Literally. Nothing. Works.

I have these boys all seated away from each other. They just continue to talk across the room. I sit them together, they talk like they’re the only people in the room. I sit between them to help them do the work, they talk through me like I’m a glass wall. They consistently sexist and rude towards each other but when I call them out on it, they’re “just joking (student) should know that.”

I can see the rest of the class getting so frustrated with them causing more behaviour issues to appear. I ask if they need help. Doesn’t work. I allow them to have resets and take a breather. Nothing works. I follow through on every single consequence. Nothing works. I give them brain breaks. Nothing. Works.

Majority of the boys at this school have a sexist outlook so is it because I’m a woman? I’m at such a loss.

Trying to get my head around where the state actually sits on school funding.

The EBA has been endorsed and looks all but locked in, with the employee vote being the last step. If the $5.4b committed over the next four years is going into the government school system, doesn't that effectively get Victoria to its 75% SRS share, leaving full funding dependent on the Commonwealth signing off?

If that's right, it seems like a fairly big deal and I'm surprised there's basically no discussion of it. Am I missing something obvious in how the SRS share is calculated, or is this just not being talked about?

Hey! considering applying for a job at Nhill College. I‘m already regional vic so the remoteness of the country is of no concern - but what about the behaviour of the students? Anyone got any info? Would very much appreciate.

Applications are about to open for TAFE 2027 and I am going to apply for Cert 4 Ed Support. It’s delivered online which is essential for me as I have to work FT. I spoke to one of the customer service people and they said there is only 6 days of mandatory attendance over the year - that’s doable. However, what about the placement? Is it four weeks at the school and does it take place in the second semester or both of them? TIA 💛

P.S. I know online is not ideal but I have worked in disability for about twenty years and do have some idea of what to expect with the kids

What is the normal ratio of teaching/observations/planning periods you are supposed to get during your placement? I am in my final placement, completing my GTPA, and getting 45 minutes a day of "free" time (one period from seven) in which I am supposed to create resources, plan for several classes, mark work and collect evidence/work samples, collect class data, and work on my GTPA.

In my first two weeks of placement, I was a full week ahead on all my planning and didn't need to take home any work to mark, I was getting around 2 hours a day of planning time. I was managing to spend my recess and lunch time talking with other teachers and getting to know the school better. It feels like my mentor teacher has noticed I appeared too relaxed, and has blocked out all of my free time with observations so now I have no choice but to mark through my recess and lunch breaks, and plan at home, often the night before the class I am planning for. I am often up until well after midnight ensuring I am ready for period 1, then waking up after around 5 hours, and the lack of sleep is triggering my migraines. I am struggling to make any progress on my GTPA, and don't feel that observations are a great use of the majority of my time in my final placement.

Is 45 minutes a day of planning/marking time normal for a final placement? Am I just working far too slowly? How do I ask for more planning time? Because I have already asked several times to have a break from observation to do marking and return student work, but every day it's the same thing again.
