Even the first chapter it should be very easy to realise he has (at best) a skewed sense of reality or is lying. He claims a toddler is seducing him on purpose because her ball rolls under his bench. He says he can be mistaken for a moviestar but a few pages later describes himself as having a crooked nose, a lisp, a hunched back, etc.
As the foreword explains, Humbert Humbert was awaiting trial (having killed the man who got Dolores pregnant) when he wrote the text, and was intending to present it in his defense.
I should note my mention is due to the weird trend that certain sorts (a group I suspect are likely to interpret Lolita as a "pro paedo" book) skip things like forewords, prologues, and epilogues entirely. Even if they did ignore that, this shit's also on page one of chapter one.
