We recently started r/BallroomCommunity, but the reason behind it goes much deeper than creating another place to talk about dance.

We’re the cofounders of the World Dance Foundation, and before that, we were simply dance parents. After years of studios, competitions, practices, costumes, travel, and watching our own children grow through dance, we saw firsthand how much ballroom can give a child.

Confidence. Discipline. Friendship. Physical activity. Goals. A sense of belonging.

We also realized how many children never get that opportunity.

One of the World Dance Foundation’s goals is to provide scholarships for talented children from disadvantaged families — kids who have the ability, passion, and work ethic to dance but whose families may not be able to afford training and the many expenses that come with it.

We also created Dance Without Limits, an initiative dedicated to helping children with disabilities experience dance and become part of the dance community.

We believe the dance floor should have room for everyone.

Dance Without Limits is about creating opportunities for children who may have physical, developmental, intellectual, or other disabilities to discover movement, music, expression, confidence, and the joy of dancing — with programs and opportunities adapted to what they can do.

And there is another reason this matters to us.

Kids are spending more and more of their childhoods on screens. We want to give more of them a reason to put the phone or tablet down, move their bodies, meet other kids, discover music, set goals, and become part of something in the real world.

Not every child will become a competitive dancer. They shouldn't have to. Every child should simply have the opportunity to dance.

That philosophy is also behind r/BallroomCommunity.

We want it to become a place where dancers, parents, teachers, judges, coaches, studios, organizers and anyone who cares about the future of ballroom can meet, exchange ideas, ask difficult questions, and help make our dance community stronger and more inclusive.

The subreddit is brand new, so the people joining now really do have an opportunity to help shape what it becomes.

We started r/BallroomCommunity to build one place for all things ballroom.

Through our work with World Dance Foundation, we've spent years around this sport — studios, competitions, judges, dancers at every level. We know the questions that come up, the decisions that trip people up early on, and what actually helps versus what just sounds good on paper. We want to put that to use here, for you.

This is for dancers, whether you're stepping into your first class or prepping for your next competition. It's for parents figuring out dance for their kid, from picking a studio to knowing what a first competition looks like. And it matters to us beyond this subreddit, too. Through our Dance Without Limits initiative, we work to get talented kids who don't have easy access to this sport, including children with disabilities, onto the dance floor. That belief drives this community as much as it drives that work: ballroom should be reachable, not exclusive.
