Three basenjis gathered on a pleasant summer morning after the rain in Washington Square Park, New York City. One youngster, Otto (male, 7-months-old,) made his first visit. He’s from the same breeder as last week’s Pierre and Cosmo. We have to determine if he is Pierre’s littermate (he was born on 9 January 2026.) The veterans on hand were Leah (female, 6-years-old,) and Kepler (male, 12-year-old.) Starting temperature: 72°F|22°C

Sorry to butt in, but this evening at around 6:30 I saw a Basenji, clearly someone’s pet (healthy, with a collar and tags) running extremely fast down the street in Upper Manhattan. I could tell that it was scared, so I sat down on a bench, hoping to coax it over to me. But it kept running. It almost got hit by several cars; many people tried to catch it. I think it may have been hit when it crossed Broadway, but it kept running. I finally lost sight of it. I feel so heartbroken for this dog and its owners. I tried spreading the word around local neighborhood groups online. Tomorrow I’ll call ACC fwiw. This is just my last-ditch attempt to see if you, as Basenji people, have heard of anyone losing their young Basenji. I have two rescue dogs myself, have had dogs all my life, am a real dog person, and I just really hope this little dog is okay! 😔

Thank you! I should note that, to the best of my knowledge, we don’t currently have any Basenjis in the neighborhood (Inwood). So I think this dog may have been visiting with its people, somehow got loose, and then got frightened and disoriented. I’m no longer on Facebook, but I did have a friend post to our neighborhood dog group, just to spread the word. Poor little dog 😔

Update: mystery solved (sort of). Just heard from my friend that the owners posted in another group on Facebook: “Our dog got out between 6-7pm between 204 and Academy on Post. His name is Cairo and he is a brown and white basenji. Mid size with an athletic build. He likes other dogs and is very curious m. I believe based on a post in another group he was seen by Broadway and Isham.” So this must be a new Basenji in the neighborhood! But alas afaik he has not yet been found. I will call the owners tomorrow (it’s too late tonight) and tell them what I know. Thanks again for your help!

My heart goes out to you. I first saw him racing down PTW. I think he may have been hit by a white sedan while crossing Broadway. But he kept running east on Isham. I lost sight of him at Sherman. He turned left (north) on Sherman. Many many people tried to catch him. There was even a guy on a yellow moped trying to keep track of him. He was just going too fast, poor little guy. Check ACC today to see if anyone reported finding him. If I were you I’d put signs all over Inwood and Kingsbridge in case he headed into the Bronx. He’s gotta slow down at some point. Thank you. We have posted flier all over Inwood and shared with businesses. We will move toward the Marble Hill and Kingsbridge area next

So many people are aware of this now; I hope we find the little guy! He must be exhausted. And he seemed scared / freaked out when I saw him yesterday. I did notice that whenever he saw another dog, he would run over, which is why I was calling out to the owners, “Grab the dog! Grab the dog!” But he ran off again before anyone could grab him.

Yes, he loves other dogs, but gets skittish when you try to grab him. I feel he is probably tired and scared. Again, thank you for your help and this information. If you see him again please call me or my husband at any time.

UPDATE: REUNITED! He has been found and is with us. Holding him tight. Thank you so much for your post letting you know you had seen him and where he was going. It was incredibly helpful. Want to express my gratitude to everyone who helped get us home 💕🐾

This is the best news ever! I have not been able to stop thinking about little Cairo! I hope I get to meet him someday, though my two Saluki mixes are somewhat reactive, so when they’re with me it can be difficult to get close to other dogs. A few people in my building go to your gym; so many people in the neighborhood have been talking about this and hoping for the best. I am so, so happy for you. Thank you so much for this update! 🎉 ❤️
