What is Steve Van Zandt's relationship with punk rock and related genres?

Bruce's connection with punk rock is usually treated as this "surprising" trivia tidbit (usually with references to Patti Smith, Ramones, The Clash, Suicide, etc.) that people wouldn't usually expect. But on the other hand, Steve seems to have been quite involved and interested in punk, likely even more than Bruce.

He once described his Underground Garage radio show as focusing on "Bands that influenced the Ramones, the Ramones, and bands influenced by the Ramones". By centering the Ramones in describing his radio show, it automatically shows his appreciation for a rock n' roll lineage that runs from rock n' roll through punk rock and beyond.

From what I can tell: Steve is usually more associated with Garage Rock, which is considered one of the predecessor genres and influences to punk rock. He has a quote which sums up his philosophy: "Pink Floyd is easy, Louie Louie is hard." Louie Louie is certainly a song associated strongly with Garage Rock and punk legacy.

He had a hand in shaping Bruce's sound, especially during The River period. He described "Held Up Without A Gun" as the closest Bruce has gotten to punk. There were a number of songs that seemed to lean either New Wave, Power Pop, British Invasion, or Punk in some way. A lot of those songs happened to be Steve's favorite.

Jon [Landau] is a formalist for the most part. He's kind of a pop formalist. I mean, he has all roots in gospel and soul, but they were also well-performed, well-sung, well-played records. Steve likes things trashier and noisier. You know, he's the garage guy, and so I tend to like things in the middle somewhere.

-A quote from Bruce during The Promise documentary

During The River especially, Bruce and Steve leaned towards a noisier and more rambunctious sound, veering away from the constrained sound of Darkness.

Anyway: I just had these general thoughts about how Steve Van Zandt's connection to Garage Rock and Punk aren't mentioned more.

I just finished The Dynasty: UConn Huskies and the final few scenes and credits were set to Wrecking Ball. When was the last time you heard Bruce in the wild/modern media when you didn’t expect it?

Seen on a concert in 2024 in Hannover. I sadly didn't ask where the owner got this from.
Any ideas if this is official merch or something he probably got off of Etsy?

Hi!

TLDR: What physical things make you think of Bruce’s music, like things from certain parts of songs, things he talks about in his music, etc.?

My daughter has an awesome second-grade teacher this year. She loves Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, etc., but I recently found out she love loves Bruce Springsteen. I didn't even know who he was until recently.

I make minis and dioramas. I am new-ish, but I want to make a small one for her about Bruce.

So this is the question:

When you think about Bruce or any of his albums/singles/anything, what physical objects come to mind? It doesn't necessarily need to be all 1,000% school-appropriate. Nothing too wild, but I do plan to have a little bucket or pile of melting ice somewhere in it. The kids are young so they won't understand that part, but still. It likely won't stay at school anyway.

I'll add photos of potential ideas for the outside, but I really just need ideas for what to put in it. A mix of any albums is fine, apparently she is a pretty hardcore fan and loves them all! I also plan to make mini replicas of all of his albums; front and back covers, plus removable records, but that will be for a different project!

Also, what do you think would be a good exterior and interior? Should it be open, or walled in? Brick walls, wood, etc? What about the floor? It can have different areas if necessary, like an indoor part that fades into an “outdoor” part, such as a road or grass).

As you can tell, I know nothing (except the ICE thing), so any help is super appreciated! I will post it when it is finished!

Potential base ideas: (Third is just an example, but I do have mini lights and things)

Max sit in last night

Max sat in with King Gizzard last night at Forest Hills. Jay has sat in many times but was out of town and called his Dad to do it. He played on the song Hot Water and they extended it to about 12 minutes. Great stuff.

“Trapped” River Tour or USA Tour?

What’s your preferred version of “Trapped”. The River Tour Version or the USA Tour version. For me I like the River Tour version better. There’s just something about that “yeah” without Patti’s high note that sounds more gutsy. I like both versions tho.

This new transfer from the filmer's first gen VHS was transferred to digital in 2023. The resulting video is much sharper and cleaner than the DVD that circulates and the audio is spectacular. 8pm eastern tonight only on YouTube. https://youtu.be/0VJI86NtgVE

I'm a huge Springsteen fan, and I've always wanted to try building a guitar, so recreating his telecaster seemed like a solid option. I filmed the process and figured I'd share here 🙂. Overall I'm really happy with how it came out

Discovered this version of The Promise and it has to be the best version I’ve ever heard. From the Albany 1977 archive release.

That Time I Went to Bonnaroo in 2009

Bonnaroo is taking 2027 off. That reminds me of the incredible time I had heading down to the festival in Manchester, Tennessee, back in 2009. And not just because of the amazing performances I saw - though seeing Bruce Springsteen, Phish, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, Elvis Coestello, Snoop Dogg, Public Enemy, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Coheed And Cambria, David Byrne and so many others within the same weekend was unbelievable.

Honestly could spend hours talking about my experience at Bonnaroo 2009. But head over to the I Heard Bruce Might Show Up Substack (link below) to read a few of my favorite among the many memories from that magical weekend. And share your favorite memories from Bonnaroo in the comments below!

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to get a vinyl copy of Blood Brothers. Last vinyl to complete my collection, preferably within the EU!

Cheers!
