Howdy folks. You may already have heard that a strike could occur this semester. This post is meant to inform everyone of the current state of bargaining and possible future actions. I am a member of the union, but not a union representative, so please correct me if I make an error.
The California Faculty Association (CFA) in a union representing around 29,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors, and coaches across the entire CSU system. It has been bargaining with the CSU management for a long time (over a year I think), but the two sides have not been able to come to an agreement yet. Currently, the CFA and CSU are at an impasse and are entering a mediation phase where a third party will try to help reach an agreement. If this does not work, there will be a fact-finding panel which reviews all the information presented by both sides and make a recommendation. If there is still no agreement, the CSU can impose their position, at which time the union members can vote to strike.
We don't know exactly how long it would take to get from mediation to striking, but a strike in fall semester definitely is possible. Hopefully, we can get a resolution and avoid a strike, but if a strike occurs you would get a lot of warning in advance.
Attached is a document created by the CFA listing the CFA's proposal and CSU management's proposal. There are several issues listed on the document, but salary is probably the biggest issue for the most CFA members. We have not received a raise in over year as the negotiations have dragged on, and the CSU wants to give us a one-time 3% lump sum for the past academic year (it is like a 3% bonus instead of a 3% raise, which matters a lot over the course of one's career and impacts one's pension too). Quite frankly, the 3% lump sum idea is insulting. They also only want to give us a 3% raise for the current year, which means we wouldn't keep up with inflation.
I'll post an update when something important happens in the future.
