if you dont like github just build a local gitea or gitlab also
47
u/No-Aioli-4656 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
Gitea or Forgejo. Gitlab is terrible advice.
I’m convinced anyone who says “Just self host gitlab.” either hasn’t done it and is suffering from Reddit brainrot(most likely), or is so far up the ass of devops/selfhosting they don’t understand gitlab is almost never the solution. It’s big, is slow fucking ruby, the ui is ass, the config file is 5k lines long, it takes 8gb ram to just sit idle.
Source: I “build”(self host) gitlab.
15
u/Spaceman_Splff May 08 '26
I spun up a gitlab instance a couple days ago on my home server and two days later my vm crashed due to memory killer alerts. Gitlab sucked up all the ram allocated to the vm.

Yup. You can get close to 2gb, or even 1.5 but you gotta KNOW what you’re doing; 2 puma workers, disable Prometheus, etc.
We are in r/claudecode for Christ sakes. Maybe 20% of the people on here have access to VPS’s or homelabs? If that?
Advice above me to “build” was terrible terrible advice.
If anything, just use local git. Have ai help you to set remote to a separate usb drive for a backup. Done.

Dumb advice.
How the fuck do you expect OP to do that?? The guy’s disk is 100% full!
→ More replies (1)2
u/No-Aioli-4656 May 09 '26
This assumes OP has the presence of mind to clean up his computer.
Because living life on the edge of full disk space is well documented as a completely stupid thing to do.
Once OP stops treating the computer in a way similar to how a toddler would, they can begin implementing proper steps.

I love Gitlab at work. In fact, I think I like it more than Github. That said, I don't really think self hosting is the solution for most things. Cloud just makes a lot more sense with reliability, less headaches, less work, distributed, and available very cheaply. It's also offsite and likely safer too.
If you're a developer, you want to spend time developing a product, not manage your tools. That's for larger companies.
6
u/BigBootyWholes May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
You don’t need a remote host to use git just so y’all know
→ More replies (1)7
u/ia42 May 08 '26
Of course not, but you do want to push it to a second location for backup. No need to install anything, it can be another headless repo on a different physical disk (or thumb drive) or a different machine (via ssh). I have a VPS with all my main domains, a dozen websites and their DNS zones - all of /etc is tracked in git and a cron job on my home desktop pulls it daily.
As for the problem OP is having, he ran out of disk space, not Claude's fault.
5
u/Terra_Incognito113 May 08 '26
Based off it looks like the project got deleted because the user had no hard drive space they should probably stick with a remote product
→ More replies (6)4
u/SSA22_HCM1 May 08 '26
If the goal is to have an easy backup, set up a bare repo somewhere, even just in a directory on another drive. Or use automatic file versioning or backup software. There are VS code extensions for the former.
No need to set up a whole SaaS platform.

I'm just going to say, if committing to git at least once per day is annoying, making software might not be the right thing to get into (I'm not saying this about you GfxJG, just the proverbial person). Especially since Claude will literally do it for you. It's one of those things that any vibe coder is just going to have to learn how to do regularly. My advice to any vibe coder. Learn what a PR is and start making that the workflow you use to add new code to your project. And again, Claude will literally do it for you.

Wait. so your disk was full. And something about how claude edits the file results in it being truncated when the disk filled up. And you're blaming claude because your hard drive was full?
This is your fault, not claude's fault.
And the file probably exists in claude's memory still since it has been reading and writing to it. You could tell it to rewrite the entire file once you have enough room.
20
u/djdadi May 08 '26
exactly. it was reconstructing the file in memory, then tried to flush to disk. its almost certainly in the conversation history.
→ More replies (2)5
u/insta May 08 '26
just like all the other times "claude deleted everything", it's quite obvious that claude should have had full control over the user's machine and simply removed the unnecessary files filling it up. it's really claude's fault for not hallucinating a remote and pushing git there. put blame where it's due.
39
u/LonelyContext 🔆 Max 20 May 08 '26
- Claude didn’t delete your file technically the kernel did. Claude operated as expected.
- Don’t try write operations with no space on your hard drive
- Why don’t you have a bigger hard drive?
- Version control
- Maybe work on projects inside Dropbox or something at the least…?
- Ask Claude to write what it knows of the file from memory to recover as much as possible.
- Maybe if you are running up against space limitations all day take a beat and figure that out (you clearly have a message up there “okay I cleared up some space”) so you’re writing a project in the middle of your workflow kicking the bucket anyway because nothing can write to your full disk any more.
- Windows is so bloated that yeah if you free up 50 mb it’ll crush that space in no time with some cache bullshit.
- A slimmer operating system with greater and more intuitive controls over things like cache and bloat will free up more space in the long run and give you a better handle on how to free up space.

Lol, well the good news is if it was all AI coded, then just re-prompt from the best of your memory, and the rest will come automatically to you as you go through it again.
But, on a serious note: running your computer in a consistently "out of space" will severely degrade it's performance. Plan on having at least 50GB free. 10-20 will not cut it. Offload all your unused data, applications and anything that can be backed up automatically to the cloud (iCloud, etc.) just turn that on and let it optimize your storage space. And use Git/Github is free and tons of free integrations that help with all kinds of stuff.
