I was looking at it from a separation of church and state perspective. I’m Native myself and have been smudged a million times.

Eh, smoke can be bad for some lung conditions. You don’t want to risk triggering an asthma attack in some kid, so it’s better to ask ahead of time.

Sure, but some people really are so sensitive that even a small amount of smoke particles sticking to their clothes and hair from this will still cause them issues. Directly inhaling it is not the sole risk.
