Guide FAQ

šŸ“Œ Ford Fusion FAQ – Common Questions & Answers Welcome to the unofficial FAQ for the Ford Fusion (2006–2020)! Whether you’re a new owner, potential buyer, or long-time driver, this post is here to answer the most common questions we see in the community.

šŸ”§ General Questions

Q: What years was the Ford Fusion produced? A: The Ford Fusion was sold in North America from 2006 to 2020. It was discontinued after the 2020 model year.

Q: What engines are available in the Fusion? A: This depends on the model year:

2006–2009: 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6

2010–2012: Same as above, plus 2.5L I4 Hybrid option and 3.5L V6 (Sport)

2013–2020 (2nd Gen): 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost, 2.5L I4, 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Sport model), and Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid options.

Q: Is the Fusion reliable? A: Generally yes, especially the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine. However, EcoBoost engines (especially early 1.6L and some 2.0L) had issues with coolant intrusion and head gaskets in certain model years.

šŸ› ļø Common Issues

Q: What are common problems with Ford Fusions? A: Depends on the year, but common issues include:

Transmission shudder (2010–2012)

Power steering failure (electric units on 2010–2014)

Coolant intrusion in EcoBoost engines (2014–2019, especially 1.5L and 2.0L)

APIM (infotainment) failures with Sync systems

Door latch recalls (2013–2016)

Q: What should I watch for when buying a used Fusion? A: Ask about:

Engine codes (especially misfires or coolant loss)

Transmission service history

Recalls completed (door latch, power steering, etc.)

Hybrid battery health if applicable

🧰 Maintenance

Q: When should I change the transmission fluid? A: Ford says 150k miles on sealed units, but many owners recommend every 60–80k miles to avoid issues.

Q: What type of oil does my Fusion use? A: Check your manual, but typically:

2.5L I4 – 5W-20

EcoBoost engines – 5W-30 or 5W-20 depending on year

Always use synthetic and a quality oil filter.

Q: Timing belt or chain? A: All Fusion engines use timing chains, which typically do not require regular replacement unless there's a failure.

šŸ”Œ Tech & Features

Q: Does my Fusion have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? A: Available on 2017+ models with SYNC 3. Earlier SYNC versions do not support it, but some owners retrofit SYNC 3 modules.

Q: How do I update SYNC? A: Visit owner.ford.com and input your VIN. SYNC updates can be installed via USB drive.

Q: Can I remote start my Fusion? A: Many Fusion trims with key fobs or FordPass app (2018+) have remote start. It may be enabled via the dealer if not active.

āš™ļø Performance & Mods

Q: Is the Fusion Sport worth it? A: If you're looking for power (325 hp, AWD, 2.7L V6), yes. It's the fastest Fusion ever made. Downsides: lower MPG, more complex engine, and discontinued after 2019.

Q: Can I tune my EcoBoost Fusion? A: Yes! Companies like Cobb, Livernois, and SCT offer tuners. Tuning can void warranty and increase wear—do your research.

šŸ’¬ Final Tips

Always check for recalls (NHTSA or Ford site).

Keep up on coolant levels, especially with EcoBoosts.

If it starts overheating, stop driving immediately—coolant issues can wreck the engine fast.

Hybrids are solid but make sure the high-voltage battery is tested before buying.

Personal Pic End of an era I traded the fusion

Got it used in 2017 it had 14999 on the clock when I got it and had 74288 when I traded it. There were a lot of good memories in it the last one was running to the Columbus micro center grand reopening. But ultimately I got tired of rowing gears and wanted a automagic and my dealer gave me a crazy deal I couldn't pass up cause of how rare it is. Here's hoping Ford starts making the fusion again and I'll own another someday it’s such a fantastic car.

2013 Ford Fusion, 190,000 km, Loud noise on turns, goes away when braking

For the last 2–3 weeks, my car has been making a loud noise that sounds like a tensioned wire with its fibers snapping/breaking. It happens most noticeably when turning the wheel fully while pulling in/out of parking lots - though not every single time, just often.

I also get a similar version of the same noise while driving on city roads at 30–50 km/h but not as loud. It's frequency matches the wheel's rotation speed -> it speeds up/slows down with wheel speed. Oddly, the noise stops when I apply the brakes, even while the car is still moving and the wheels are still rotating.

Online searches pointed to a CV axle/joint problem, with advice to look for grease leaks, torn boots, or excess play. So I pulled the wheel and did a visual inspection: No torn CV boot, no grease leakage

Checked the CV axle and surrounding suspension arms for movement -> only found slight in/out (axial) movement at the CV axle, no side-to-side, which from what I've seen on youtube is considered normal

Given that braking makes the noise go away (even mid-motion), what else could this be besides the CV axle?

Has anyone else with their Fusion run into this same issue?

Saying goodbye after almost 20 years

After almost 20 years of driving one of my favorite cars, the Ford Fusion, which I've had 6 of..2007, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2017 and the last 2019, I've sold the car. It was Sport with 37K on it. I'll miss that car. Lots of memories. It's the only car I've ever owed more than 3 years. I purchased this one at the end of the lease because the lev was to good to pass up. I'll miss you.

2019 radio in 2016 Fusion Energi

My original radio is dead makes lots of pops booms and weasing sounds went online found a 2019 on eBay no CD player but I didn’t care.

Plugged it in and it plays audio to the door speakers very very softly and rear speakers are probably normal volume. Fader to lower the rear brings it down about 1/4 loudness before it shuts off. Crank volume to max and the other speakers are maybe 1/2 max volume.

I get SAT antennas is disconnected even though it’s good and plugged in.

I get APIM can’t find radio. So I can t control it using the screen.

Can control radio through the dials and steering buttons.

I can see what station I am on using the cluster

I can use steering wheel to switch FM to AM to SAT.

APM has code configuration error.

I get audio enable line is grounded.

Screen says entertainment unavailable. But when it first wakes up it will find the radio and control it for a few seconds then it’s gone.

Is this radio bad or the as built data not set right? I tried matching the as built with my original radio and disabled CD player options.

2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid SYNC 3 screen won’t turn on , common issue?

Hey guys! My SYNC 3 screen suddenly stopped turning on. I’ve tried holding the volume/power button + the right arrow (Seek Up) to reset it, but nothing happens.

I’m being quoted around $250 just for the diagnosis, so before I pay that, I wanted to see if this is a common issue with the 2018 Fusion Hybrid and whether there’s anything I can try to fix it myself.
Has anyone experienced this? If so, what ended up being the problem, and were you able to fix it yourself

I miss my sound 😭

Will 235/55 R17 tires fit? 2013 titanium

I have the 19 inch wheels on right now 245/40 R19. I want a set of winter tires this year and I’ve found some good deals on marketplace. The closest I’ve found to my tire size is 235/55 R17. While that’s not the stock set from what I’ve googled online (235/50 R17) I’m wondering if anyone has tried this slightly larger sidewall size?

Unable to reset 2019 push button start Ford Fusion TPMS

And it's driving me nuts. None of the fixes I found on the internet work, even disconnecting the battery. The tires are all a little over the suggested PSI (36) but none of them are under, even the one that isn't showing. It's a push button start so I don't think there is a physical reset button. You go to vehicle settings on the Sync entertainment system and there is no "vehicle info" option. The problem is that the flashing tire pressure light is annoying to the point that it is distracting and if I'm not keeping my eyes on the road bad things could happen. I'm 56 years old. I've never needed to be told to check the air pressure in my tires because that's just common sense car maintenance. I honestly wish I could just disable the TPMS because I don't need it. I'm including screenshots that might help

Discussion Strut bearing change

Have a 2017 titanium 2.0 with 94k miles and recently heard a slight clunking sound when turning the wheel slightly at low speed. Turns out one of the front strut bearings is worn out.

Now I’m curious if I should replace just the bearings or struts too since I’m near 100k. I haven’t had any suspension/ride quality issues at all, so unsure if I want to pull the trigger on new struts.

Duda sobre adquirir un fusión

Post image

Discussion I want a Fusion that’ll last 300,000 miles

I had a 2016 fusion from brand new to 342,000 miles, 2.5L engine and am thinking about buying another. Does anyone know if the 2017 and newer 2.5L engines had any design changes/flaws I should be aware of? Also feel free to ask any questions about my ownership of my last one

AC consistency doesn't work in 2007 SEL

Due to many years of hard times, I still have my 2007 fusion. It's old and the body is rusting away but I have nothing else because I can't afford anything else. The AC has been nothing but trouble for the past 4.5 years. I just had the compressor replaced after less than 20k miles again because it was leaking and now they think it's the evaporator sensor again. That was replaced just 1 year ago. Not to mention the AC has been recharged multiple times in the past 4.5 years. Has anyone had a fusion with unfixable AC problems?

I don't want to give up on her

I've had my 2010 Ford Fusion SE for 16 years. She has 230,000 miles. Been having a problem. The car creaks when I turn the wheel. It does it when driving and when it's parked. I dropped $1000 today on parts and labor. Ball joints struts control arm and tie rods. Also new pads and rotors. My cousin did the work. There is still a creaking noise when I turn the wheel. The car was fine when we drove around the block to test it. After he left it started again. I'm at my wits end with the car. I'm pulling my hair out. The engine is rock solid. No leaks or anything. I don't know what to do. I don't want to have to call my cousin and tell him it was all for nothing.

2012 Ford fusion aftermarket parts

Hello, I am going to replace my EGR valve and possibly throttle body on my 2012 Ford fusion 2.5 with 195k miles on it. Are motorcraft parts the way to go or are there after market suppliers that can be trusted for these two parts?
