I don't mind spamming x to sprint but pushing my thumb sticks in thousands of times I feel will actually wear the controller down more than a face button.
I mean I know you don't spam L3 to sprint but it's still gonna get alotta use
Genuinely just dont smash your buttons in, maybe im just so lucky but none of my 3 ps5 controllers got any drift at all from hundreds of hours still fine today.
Lucky. I’ve always taken great care of any electronics ever since I was a kid and I’ve still been plagued with drift. The dualsense edge has paid for itself tho since switching analogs is easy. Will probably never buy a standard controller again
Here in US I order them from PS Direct and they are $20 per module. New standard controller is like $70-$80. If my currency conversion is right it seems they’re charging about double for the modules where you’re at
The rubber on my joysticks for both my xbox and dual shock controllers worn down for years and I still don't have drift. But tbf, my switch joycons that I barely used got drift after a while so I think it really is about tolerances and whether dust gets in the mechanism.
Your bitch ass thumbs and puny muscles may not but some of us press hard on controllers without even knowing it especially the analog sticks, that’s what causes stick drift.
I never got this take, I still have my original dualsense from 2020. I play a lot of games, including games that probably cause more wear, like Maneater, and From Soft games? Never had an issue honestly. Might just be lucky?
They're death gripping the fuck out of their controllers without realising it.
I have a parent in their late 60s, they didn't grow up with video games but were familiar with them from me and a sibling growing up playing them. Now they're retired, they've been trying more games out themselves with their free time. Regardless of if there is a boss fight for something complicated happening, they hold the controller as tightly as possible and will hit the buttons and triggers that way too.
I've yet to brake any of my controllers after years of ownership and playing a couple hours most nights, but even the controller I gave them 5 months ago, R2 has loosened and the analog stick rubber has worn smooth.
yeah i remember back when and Dualshock 4 was notorious for the thumbstick rubber wearing off, but i never had that issue…then one day i had friends over playing local multiplayer n after the session was over he handed me back the controller and the stick looked FUCKED up. like how tf did you obliterate my shit in the span of a few hours? 😭
Until more recent times you literally couldn't avoid it. All old and most new controllers use ALPs joysticks with physical potentiometers that wear out over time. You can get controllers (3rd party) for PS/Xbox that use Hall effect or TMR and those eliminate stick drift completely by being magnetic/sensor based instead of physical components.
you legitimately must not be playing much considering nintendo got sued and still to this day have to replace switch 1 controllers for free in the US because they break so easily.
i’m aware and i’ve played my Switch 1 plenty. never had an issue using the original joycons up until i sold it for the 2. never purchased a Pro controller in that entire time span either
Basically all 1st person shooters use L3 to sprint, and as someone who has put a lot of time into them I can tell you it is still the right stick that always goes first.
Hoping for a toggle. L3 to toggle sprint on/off, even is just as a setting for accessibility, would be a godsend. I'm playing Rdr2 for the first time now and having to time my X-taps to use the horse properly is maybe cool on paper, but gets really annoying really fast. David cage levels of stupid.
Yeah imagine what it's going to do to those of us that have arthritis that have issues pushing that thumbstick in in the first damn place. This is just a bad move all around in my opinion. Not to mention people are going to be going directly from playing GTA V straight to playing the new one.
Your thumb sticks are susceptible to drift. If anything, you will notice physical changes in your controller far more from this than tapping the x button.
I hope third person standard fps works just as it does in rdr 2 click to sprint not click and hold to sprint the gimped version in GTA 5 as it only worked as click to sprint in first person view fuckin annoying
i would play it on my steam deck a lot and luckily you can set up a button to just press it over and over again from a single click, saved my controller’s life
Wish I could get 3 years out of my ps5 controllers but every time I grt stick drift after a year or two and I'm gentle with them. Lucia is definitely going to give me some sort of stick drift though
X button is very durable but L3 sounds like it's gonna break after click couple of times. Also when you use that L3 so much, the famous " " Analog Drift " will happen sooner.
I think people just hate having anything familiar changed, especially when the game in question is linked to so many people's childhood and nostalgic thoughts. That's this whole community it seems.
I always thought it was stupid that they had 3 speeds. I was grateful that they 'solved' the issue in GTAO, until I realized they changed the default movement to jog - idk how that was the sensible solution vs eliminating jog and having it as walk/sprint.
Always remapped sprint to R1. It was more comfortable and it allowed you to look around while you sprinted. Next level is setting R4 or R5 to a sprint macro that did the tapping for you
Yeah, initially it was kind of cool because it felt like your hand had to sprint, but now it just seems silly to do that with a controller. Especially with single click sprinting out there.
What is good though is that in both GTAV and RDR2 you could switch the controller layout. On my GTAV I have R3 as a toggle run, then I have X as the crouch. RDR2 is the same way.
I hated it, couldve been implemented better. But L3 is even worse, Battlefield 6 has this, and its quite annoying sometimes because sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesnt.
The biggest pain with L3 is that some games let you press L3 again to stop, and others require you to actually stop moving in order for the sprint toggle to deactivate.
It’s small, but every time I mistakenly press L3 to stop because I misremember whether it’s this game or that game that has it, it’s annoying. I wish itd he consistent.
I think the stick for sprinting is 100% worse yeah. It ruins modern controllers (as in, they will fail with stick drift). And it ruins any aiming you may be doing while doing that.
No, because tapping to sprint was dumb anyway, no matter the button. As far as I understand it, the whole tapping will be gone in GTA6, so the difference is whether you prefer running with X or running with stick.
Yeah when you say some dumb shit people are gonna want to ask you questions to understand
To be honest, no it doesn’t. Sprinting has no impact on my aim and probably most people’s aim (because again 90% of games work like this). And the x button is 100000x worse for aiming because you have to take your thumb off the stick and can’t even look around while sprinting if you have to mash the button. It’s one of the worst things about rockstar games.
Sounds like you have a controller issue man. I played COD for way longer than I should have before stopping, across multiple console generations and it has never not worked.
Grew up on cod on PS2,PS3, PS4, Xbox360, and my launch ps5 controller had stick drift from what I believe was cod and me not being aware I had to push it gently. I prefer mapping it to back buttons on my steam deck, not an option on ps5 😞
Maybe i do have, after all its already 3 years old, but i'm guessing many other people will have issues as well. But Tap X to run was always a shitty way of sprinting, i completely wrecked my X button on PS3 due to it.
It's not just battlefield, it's basically every modern game. And I don't know what you're doing wrong such that this sometimes doesn't work for you. This is way easier and a clear upgrade.
In rdr2, it worked great for riding horses. Hitting the button to the rhythm of your horse's gallop made so much sense to me and let you really finely control your speed. Character walk speed was a whole different story
I seriously hate L3 to sprint. Many people apparently love it through. I praised 007 First Light for not using L3 to sprint and I was ripped to shreds in that subreddit.
I feel the lack of that is what made R* games unique. I find it annoying to walk around in the world when you always have to carefully tilt the stick forward but not so much that you begin to jog. I really hope they add a "classic" controls option for people like me
EDIT: I also just find it x10 more immersive having to spam X really fast when you're running away from the cops or whatever
Yeah I agree. The sprint/jog mechanic on X gave you a nice natural gradation for the characters gait, but also at the same time I understand that it prevents the player from controlling camera direction easily while running so I understand why they would make that change
I didn't mind it on a controller but it never translated to keyboard and mouse very well. I don't even know if it made it to the PC version of GTA 5 because I never tried and just held shift. I'm glad to see it gone but I wonder if there'll be an option to bring it back if you prefer it.
exactly, people would rather the game be dumbed down and feel like any other game than have a feature that adds a sense of realism and immersion that makes the game unique. praying there’s a setting to change it
when did i ever allude to that? if you had any form of reading comprehension you would know that dumbing down just means simplifying and not that it’s made for people that are stupid
brother this game is quite literally a crime simulator where the cops domt investigate or remember you after youve driven too many blocks away, what about this “experience” screams realism? and if it’s real you want you can also very easily walk outside and run for real
brother don’t hit me with the go for a walk outside if you want realism. tap to sprint was one of gtas defining features. this isn’t complaining about the hand not actually grabbing a door handle or any other trivial shit, it’s about changing a feature that’s been in every gta. also gta is known for its realism, it’s what this entire games mission statement is
The reason why people tapped x to sprint was because GTA 3 had you use “hold x to sprint,” but your character had stamina so it would obviously deplete your stamina when holding it down. Everyone collectively (yet independently) figured out “oh, if i just tap x, it reduces how much stamina i use and i can sprint longer.” Eventually rockstar and other games adopted “tap x to sprint.”
The whole idea of everyone collectively learning something independently like that is funny cuz its almost like how civilizations all discovered fire independent of one another. Except it was grand theft auto - civilizations great next discovery after fire!
I don't like it, but can understand why it's there. The speed at which you tap the button controls how fast you move and how fast you consume stamina, which can be useful for some aspects of the game.
In GTA it matters less except for the triathlons in 5. In RDR2 I'm mostly holding to have my horse trot, but when I want to haul ass I can just spam the button.
Its more a case of being a little sad that the traditional rockstar mechanic is taking its leave. Its better, pressing l3 to sprint is wayy better, but i cant lie that nostalgia isnt telling me to be a bit upset about it.
I did! I enjoyed that it made sprinting feel taxing like it would in real life, more instantaneous feedback of lack of stamina than a toggle would give. It worked well in GTA4 because of how dense that game was, in GTA5 and the more open games that followed it it’s more of a nuisance when you’re traversing large open areas with no vehicle nearby to hijack.
I was impartial to it. Part of me liked it because it was a part of GTA for so long. I think it also added a slight but if tension when running away from cops. You ended up starting to slam the button to gtfo. That being said the first time I ever played a GTA on PC I very quickly stopped liking it. Pressing shift over and over again with my pinky fucking sucked.
I'm so mad about when they introduced hold to sprint in GTA V but had the normal stick input no longer be normal walking but SLOW RUNNING which makes walking around imprecise. WHY ROCKSTAR?????? IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO SIMPLE
after changing it to l1 i was okay with it, but only reason people actually like it HAS to be nostalgia of some sort, if i could just tap l3 like in pretty much ANY other game would be nice finally
