Bad news: Rockstar has changed the classic tapping X to sprint and now it’ll be just holding L3 instead

People actually liked to spam x to sprint

https://giphy.com/gifs/11ykUODgXjAXZu

u/queen-peach_ 9h ago

Actually shocked, spamming x to sprint has been one of the biggest thorns in my side when it comes to rockstar games. So glad they’re changing it lol

181

u/johnychrist16 7h ago

Rdr2 probably single handedly took a 3 years of service off my controllers life span

75

u/EshayAdlay420 6h ago

I don't mind spamming x to sprint but pushing my thumb sticks in thousands of times I feel will actually wear the controller down more than a face button.

I mean I know you don't spam L3 to sprint but it's still gonna get alotta use

32

u/Odd_Seat3940 6h ago

Exactly, the dualsense gets drift if you even think about using it.

10

u/Own_Preference_8103 6h ago

Genuinely just dont smash your buttons in, maybe im just so lucky but none of my 3 ps5 controllers got any drift at all from hundreds of hours still fine today.

4

u/Ol_UnReliable20 5h ago

Lucky. I’ve always taken great care of any electronics ever since I was a kid and I’ve still been plagued with drift. The dualsense edge has paid for itself tho since switching analogs is easy. Will probably never buy a standard controller again

2

u/ungebleicht 3h ago

How much is a stick module where you live?

In Germany its 36€ and a brand new controller is 60€ so it seems kinda overpriced.

I feel like it would be worth it to pay 24€ more and get a brand new controller.

2

u/Ol_UnReliable20 2h ago

Here in US I order them from PS Direct and they are $20 per module. New standard controller is like $70-$80. If my currency conversion is right it seems they’re charging about double for the modules where you’re at

2

u/Lopsided_Hunt2814 1h ago

If you want to solder you can buy TMR/hall sticks and mod the stick module. Also means if you screw up then you've only broken a module lol.

3

u/prettygirlgravesite 5h ago

at the end of the day the real issue is these fucking dualsenses being more sensitive than cotton😭

1

u/OddlySituated 5h ago

The rubber on my joysticks for both my xbox and dual shock controllers worn down for years and I still don't have drift. But tbf, my switch joycons that I barely used got drift after a while so I think it really is about tolerances and whether dust gets in the mechanism.

1

u/andreezy93 5h ago

Try going into your switch settings and recalibrating the dead zone for the controllers.

1

u/Regular-Disaster-979 2h ago

Or you play on high dead zones and don't notice. Skilled players play on very low deadzones

1

u/Own_Preference_8103 2h ago

I'd wax your ass on any platform and any game. Also, skilled players use pcs.

1

u/Regular-Disaster-979 24m ago

You're talking to a legend rn

1

u/SurePrize6218 3h ago

Your bitch ass thumbs and puny muscles may not but some of us press hard on controllers without even knowing it especially the analog sticks, that’s what causes stick drift.

1

u/Own_Preference_8103 2h ago

Alright buddy, definitely not your greasy shitty hands contributing.

1

u/SurePrize6218 26m ago

You got me

1

u/fuckYOUswan 4h ago

Stop beating your controller like an unwanted step child.

1

u/Mr-Pugtastic 3h ago

I never got this take, I still have my original dualsense from 2020. I play a lot of games, including games that probably cause more wear, like Maneater, and From Soft games? Never had an issue honestly. Might just be lucky?

1

u/ben_ji1974 3h ago

DualSense Edge is pricey but it's good.

-1

u/WhoIsJazzJay 6h ago

i’ve been gaming since 2002 and have never had a single controller drift lmao what are yall doing to your thumb sticks

4

u/Eclectic_Mudokon 5h ago

They're death gripping the fuck out of their controllers without realising it.

I have a parent in their late 60s, they didn't grow up with video games but were familiar with them from me and a sibling growing up playing them. Now they're retired, they've been trying more games out themselves with their free time. Regardless of if there is a boss fight for something complicated happening, they hold the controller as tightly as possible and will hit the buttons and triggers that way too.

I've yet to brake any of my controllers after years of ownership and playing a couple hours most nights, but even the controller I gave them 5 months ago, R2 has loosened and the analog stick rubber has worn smooth.

2

u/WhoIsJazzJay 5h ago

yeah i remember back when and Dualshock 4 was notorious for the thumbstick rubber wearing off, but i never had that issue…then one day i had friends over playing local multiplayer n after the session was over he handed me back the controller and the stick looked FUCKED up. like how tf did you obliterate my shit in the span of a few hours? 😭

1

u/BiggiycheeseXBL 5h ago

Until more recent times you literally couldn't avoid it. All old and most new controllers use ALPs joysticks with physical potentiometers that wear out over time. You can get controllers (3rd party) for PS/Xbox that use Hall effect or TMR and those eliminate stick drift completely by being magnetic/sensor based instead of physical components.

1

u/WhoIsJazzJay 4h ago

across PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Wii, Switch 1, and Switch 2 i’ve never had this issue

2

u/-roachboy 4h ago

you legitimately must not be playing much considering nintendo got sued and still to this day have to replace switch 1 controllers for free in the US because they break so easily.

1

u/WhoIsJazzJay 4h ago

i’m aware and i’ve played my Switch 1 plenty. never had an issue using the original joycons up until i sold it for the 2. never purchased a Pro controller in that entire time span either

u/betazoid_cuck 4h ago

Basically all 1st person shooters use L3 to sprint, and as someone who has put a lot of time into them I can tell you it is still the right stick that always goes first.

1

u/Medium_Hat_1115 6h ago

If that’s your concern they’ll probably have auto sprint

1

u/xXJpupXx 5h ago

I bet you can change what button is for sprinting in settings and it most likely have a setting to make it tap or hold X to sprint.

1

u/DyabeticBeer 5h ago

So? You'll still press it less than x/a

1

u/CasualEjaculator 4h ago

I honestly doubt it will have to be repeatedly pressed. It’s probably a switch to the more traditional click to sprint that most other games use.

1

u/pufferpig 4h ago

Hoping for a toggle. L3 to toggle sprint on/off, even is just as a setting for accessibility, would be a godsend. I'm playing Rdr2 for the first time now and having to time my X-taps to use the horse properly is maybe cool on paper, but gets really annoying really fast. David cage levels of stupid.

1

u/-roachboy 4h ago

I bought an xbox elite controller just so I could map the paddles to L3/R3 and avoid clicking the sticks 😭

1

u/mlvassallo 3h ago

It’s going to be a click to sprint like every other game… why did y’all lose braincells?

1

u/Cryptographer_Weekly 3h ago

Yeah imagine what it's going to do to those of us that have arthritis that have issues pushing that thumbstick in in the first damn place. This is just a bad move all around in my opinion. Not to mention people are going to be going directly from playing GTA V straight to playing the new one.

1

u/OkExercise8739 3h ago

Nan mes la pour le coup je pense qui faudra rester appuyer sinon sa serait pas intuitif

1

u/Trewper- 2h ago

If you play call of duty 99% of that game is sprinting and crouching, my sticks are fine after hundreds of hours.

1

u/Ok-Address7280 6h ago

THANK YOU!!!!! That’s my biggest concern with it, that just sounds like asking for stick drift 🤦🏽‍♂️

1

u/UnculturedDegenerate 6h ago

Its not repeated. Just one click to sprint.

9

u/Avalon_Within 6h ago

Your face buttons are fine.

Your thumb sticks are susceptible to drift. If anything, you will notice physical changes in your controller far more from this than tapping the x button.

1

u/SnoresMcSlackerly 5h ago

I got a DualSense Edge pretty much just so I could map those extra little back buttons to L3 and R3. Worth it for me! That stick drift.

4

u/RevolutionaryAd1621 7h ago

Literally was just thinking that the seen this comment... half the reason I just chill when riding a horse and take in the scenery

1

u/NunButter 6h ago

The Dualsense edge is great for the extra back buttons. No need to click them down just map L3/R3

2

u/IsaKGames14 5h ago

I’ve been considering buying one but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet

2

u/NunButter 4h ago

I won’t say it’s worth the money but it is a really sweet controller

1

u/SweatnCancer 6h ago

Standard fps 1 was a god send in rdr 2 esp how it worked in third person I get you still had to gallop but on foot omg was the best control scheme

1

u/johnychrist16 6h ago

Hell yes dude, took awhile to get use to the steering but it really was a god send

1

u/SweatnCancer 5h ago

I hope third person standard fps works just as it does in rdr 2 click to sprint not click and hold to sprint the gimped version in GTA 5 as it only worked as click to sprint in first person view fuckin annoying

1

u/SweatnCancer 5h ago

I play in third person in rdr but standard fps with having toggle to run on is the god send one click on foot your sprinting

1

u/mothernaychore 6h ago

i would play it on my steam deck a lot and luckily you can set up a button to just press it over and over again from a single click, saved my controller’s life

1

u/UnculturedDegenerate 6h ago

Rdr2 you can change the settings to sprint with L3 and crouch with X thats what i do.

1

u/its_witty 5h ago

You could change it in options to hold, you know that right?

1

u/CelebrationFair6887 4h ago

It was the first thing i changed when i got the game

1

u/NonProphet8theist 3h ago

And off my thumb lifespan that shit get tiiight

1

u/After_Competition_87 3h ago

Wish I could get 3 years out of my ps5 controllers but every time I grt stick drift after a year or two and I'm gentle with them. Lucia is definitely going to give me some sort of stick drift though

1

u/BYCjake 2h ago

When I first ride a horse and found out that the mechanic I was seriously confused

1

u/Burnthiscnts 1h ago

X doesn’t wear down like L3 does.

1

u/hdlnddky 6h ago

X button is very durable but L3 sounds like it's gonna break after click couple of times. Also when you use that L3 so much, the famous " " Analog Drift " will happen sooner.

3

u/Achilleswar 6h ago

Theres been the option to hold to sprint for awhile.

2

u/HolyTrinityOfDrugs 6h ago

Hold X to sprint has been a thing in GTA 5 for a long time

1

u/General_AlooTikki 7h ago

It's just weird on ps controller but very comfortable on Xbox. I hope we can switch it up.

1

u/D0Gz123 6h ago

Just change it in settings

1

u/RavenEffect9 5h ago

I think people just hate having anything familiar changed, especially when the game in question is linked to so many people's childhood and nostalgic thoughts. That's this whole community it seems.

1

u/BetterSchwifty 5h ago

How hard is that to do?

1

u/ijustdontlikespiders 5h ago

You know there was always a controller scheme option that makes sprint on the thumb stick right? Like there has been since the PS4/Xbone days

1

u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 5h ago

Don't they all have a setting to disable this? (Effectively auto spamming)

1

u/memymomeddit 5h ago

I always thought it was stupid that they had 3 speeds. I was grateful that they 'solved' the issue in GTAO, until I realized they changed the default movement to jog - idk how that was the sensible solution vs eliminating jog and having it as walk/sprint.

1

u/Main-Passenger-3278 4h ago

You guys know there's an option to change it so you can just hold X to sprint, right?

1

u/Krispy7Khrome 4h ago

Yknow theres a setting for that? At least in gta 5 and rdr2

1

u/XeroTrinity 4h ago

Always remapped sprint to R1. It was more comfortable and it allowed you to look around while you sprinted. Next level is setting R4 or R5 to a sprint macro that did the tapping for you

1

u/asapbuckets 4h ago

You can change the tapping setting to hold X to sprint in the settings

1

u/Snow-87-M 4h ago

You can Chang from tap x to sprint to hold x to sprint. No need to spam

1

u/Sirgolfs 4h ago

Yeah, initially it was kind of cool because it felt like your hand had to sprint, but now it just seems silly to do that with a controller. Especially with single click sprinting out there.

1

u/Desperate_Damage4632 3h ago

It was changeable in the control settings.

1

u/blackman1925 3h ago

it made sprinting feel more engaging

1

u/444kwowd 1h ago

spamming to sprint has been changed in GTA V for years now. there’s a hold to sprint setting.

1

u/Travie38 1h ago

What is good though is that in both GTAV and RDR2 you could switch the controller layout. On my GTAV I have R3 as a toggle run, then I have X as the crouch. RDR2 is the same way.

1

u/Southern_Net5894 34m ago

Me too. You can actually look around WHILE sprinting now

17

u/Silver4ura 8h ago

It definitely added an effort to running that connected you with the main character sort of like rumble.

1

u/tetsuo_and_soup 1h ago

Thats what i really like about it, also I like the control over movement speed between holding/tapping X

65

u/Rightsidebestside 9h ago

I hated it, couldve been implemented better. But L3 is even worse, Battlefield 6 has this, and its quite annoying sometimes because sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesnt.

87

u/cheerbacks 8h ago

Battlefield 6 has this? How about 99% of third and first person action games since the dawn of time lmfao

I have also quite seriously never heard of someone not being able to spring in battlefield. Your controller is broken pal

13

u/UntiI117 6h ago

also the fact that most games you can change it to whatever you want

3

u/brprk 6h ago

Including gta5

8

u/Ravens_Bite 7h ago

Come on now, you have to realize that a good chunk of this subreddit are over the age of 40 that only play like one or two games 😂

5

u/MFDOOMscrolling 7h ago

I thought it was mostly kids (teens) in here

1

u/kr0tchy 4h ago

I bet it is, I bet the original gta6 subreddit is closer to his guess

1

u/MFDOOMscrolling 3h ago

I highly doubt that

1

u/callinat6800points 2h ago

the ball and gun community is a bell curve in terms of age

2

u/wowosrs 4h ago

Yeah I haven’t played a shooter since the original MW2 days and if you asked me how to sprint I would’ve guessed press L3

2

u/Bludfyr 2h ago

It took too far to find someone saying this. Almost every game uses L3 as sprint?!

2

u/CheapConstruction659 7h ago

Insane their comment currently has 54 upvotes. People just agreeing with anything that sounds authoritative.

1

u/mpelton 5h ago

The biggest pain with L3 is that some games let you press L3 again to stop, and others require you to actually stop moving in order for the sprint toggle to deactivate.

It’s small, but every time I mistakenly press L3 to stop because I misremember whether it’s this game or that game that has it, it’s annoying. I wish itd he consistent.

91

u/AwarenessThick1685 9h ago

Yall think the stick is worse? That's crazy imo

16

u/SoHigh0 7h ago

I hate pressing that thing no matter for what

2

u/Chem_BPY 5h ago

Yeah, been playing on some controllers with back buttons and first thing I do is remap l3 click to a button on the back.

1

u/ajm2247 3h ago

This, I play PUBG on console and you use stick presses and holds so much in the game mapping them to bottom buttons is a huge QoL change.

1

u/KyTheReject 4h ago

get a controller that feels good to press it, i realized the difference in quality on the sticks once i upgraded

1

u/That_wet_vaporeon 5h ago

Skill issue for them or their controller sucks lol

1

u/Aley98 8h ago

It’s not worse. It is tradition. Lemme spam the X button bro 😭

1

u/Cr45h0v3r1de 6h ago

Honestly would be cool if there was a toggle option. Makes the most sense to keep everyone happy

1

u/kr0tchy 4h ago

It starts getting all messy though, because they probably have x set up for something that works perfect in that position of the controller already

-10

u/_alright_then_ 8h ago

I think the stick for sprinting is 100% worse yeah. It ruins modern controllers (as in, they will fail with stick drift). And it ruins any aiming you may be doing while doing that.

6

u/julianalexander917 8h ago

Really think about that for a second, are you aiming while tapping x to sprint?

-4

u/_alright_then_ 8h ago

No, because tapping to sprint was dumb anyway, no matter the button. As far as I understand it, the whole tapping will be gone in GTA6, so the difference is whether you prefer running with X or running with stick.

And in that case, stick is 100% worse imo

1

u/AggravatingGrade755 7h ago

How does pushing L3 affect aiming? You know that the L stands for left right? Aiming is with the right stick.

→ More replies (10)

1

u/cheerbacks 7h ago

You aim with your left stick bro?

0

u/_alright_then_ 7h ago

Jesus you're the 3rd in like 5 minutes.

Walking around ruins your aiming as well, it's not a difficult concept

1

u/cheerbacks 7h ago

Yeah when you say some dumb shit people are gonna want to ask you questions to understand

To be honest, no it doesn’t. Sprinting has no impact on my aim and probably most people’s aim (because again 90% of games work like this). And the x button is 100000x worse for aiming because you have to take your thumb off the stick and can’t even look around while sprinting if you have to mash the button. It’s one of the worst things about rockstar games.

2

u/_alright_then_ 7h ago

The worst thing about rockstar games is that you have to keep tapping it, IMO.

And yeah, it does impact it for me. You can disagree that's fine

28

u/skeeplepeople 8h ago

Bro said battlefield has this as if millions of other games haven’t had it, it’s quiet standard.

10

u/STDsInAJuiceBoX 7h ago

Yeah literally every FPS game with sprint it’s L3.

1

u/jwthecreed 7h ago

This even being a “discussion topic” is quite insane. And the amount of people acting like it’s bad news is contrarian.

Left stick to sprint is not novel. I remember even in the GTA4 & RDRedem.1 days people asked for an alternative to “Tap”.

25

u/UrFriendTilUrEnd 9h ago

Sounds like you have a controller issue man. I played COD for way longer than I should have before stopping, across multiple console generations and it has never not worked.

2

u/eluuu 7h ago

lol slide cancelling has killed 3 of my controllers

2

u/billg1963 7h ago

Grew up on cod on PS2,PS3, PS4, Xbox360, and my launch ps5 controller had stick drift from what I believe was cod and me not being aware I had to push it gently. I prefer mapping it to back buttons on my steam deck, not an option on ps5 😞

1

u/OutlandishnessWarm61 6h ago

I think people get confused by the varied paces of running.

Walking, running tac sprint, back to running when stamina drops.

1

u/Rightsidebestside 9h ago

Maybe i do have, after all its already 3 years old, but i'm guessing many other people will have issues as well. But Tap X to run was always a shitty way of sprinting, i completely wrecked my X button on PS3 due to it.

2

u/TheRealSheevPalpatin 7h ago

What else would you use? You need the triggers for aiming/shooting

1

u/little_kid_lover_123 7h ago

Touch pad of course

1

u/El_Lu-Shin 9h ago

That's true. That's why I assign that to my back left button in my controller.

1

u/RockinMadRiot 9h ago

It's a bit bugged.

It's not the L3, it's how you are standing. I noticed if I tap O a few times, it will sprint.

1

u/crazygoattoe 8h ago

It's not just battlefield, it's basically every modern game. And I don't know what you're doing wrong such that this sometimes doesn't work for you. This is way easier and a clear upgrade.

1

u/bmpenn 7h ago

My friend played half the GTA 5 story without knowing you had to tap, he was like, “That’s why I could never win that race!”

1

u/LordBeans69 7h ago

It’s been being used on shooters as the sprint button for nearly as long as it’s been a button

1

u/Exact_Rooster9870 6h ago

In rdr2, it worked great for riding horses. Hitting the button to the rhythm of your horse's gallop made so much sense to me and let you really finely control your speed. Character walk speed was a whole different story

1

u/Ok_Insurance_505 5h ago

The vast majority of games have it, quite literally the standard in modern gaming for sprinting.

1

u/Particular-Union-284 5h ago

If anything, that sounds like an issue with your controller lol.

1

u/ajm2247 3h ago

The key is to get a controller with bottom buttons and map them to left stick and right stick press it's a game changer.

0

u/Used-Can-6979 8h ago

I seriously hate L3 to sprint. Many people apparently love it through. I praised 007 First Light for not using L3 to sprint and I was ripped to shreds in that subreddit.

19

u/Zopotroco 9h ago

Of course! Way better than L3, it’s almost like tapping with feet

9

u/Filippikus 8h ago

I can respect the attitude, tho I really don't understand

8

u/TheBoisterousBoy 8h ago

I can respect the attitude, but my controller cannot.

5

u/Tornada5786 8h ago

You know you could just go run outside

1

u/bankfraud1 7h ago

Bold of you to assume we go outside

6

u/JenJenB_ 9h ago

I just didn't like pressing L3 so it was kinda preferable.

3

u/Stalk33r 8h ago edited 8h ago

I'm sorry, spamming X is preferable to clicking L3 once? How?!?

1

u/KitchenIntention6675 5h ago

of course it is. clicking L3 once is about as inconvenient as spamming X for at least 40 minutes

3

u/FantasticSir7806 8h ago

You get way more control over what speed you're going at. And how will you jog in GTA 6 if L3 is a toggle sprint?

2

u/AdditionIcy1536 6h ago

Jog is pushing forward slightly???? It's a stick not a button.

-2

u/Stalk33r 8h ago

I'd assume they'll tie your movementspeed to how far you push the stick, like every other 3rd person game ever

4

u/FantasticSir7806 8h ago

I feel the lack of that is what made R* games unique. I find it annoying to walk around in the world when you always have to carefully tilt the stick forward but not so much that you begin to jog. I really hope they add a "classic" controls option for people like me

EDIT: I also just find it x10 more immersive having to spam X really fast when you're running away from the cops or whatever

2

u/bankfraud1 7h ago

Yeah I agree. The sprint/jog mechanic on X gave you a nice natural gradation for the characters gait, but also at the same time I understand that it prevents the player from controlling camera direction easily while running so I understand why they would make that change

3

u/chrisc44890 9h ago

I didn't mind it on a controller but it never translated to keyboard and mouse very well. I don't even know if it made it to the PC version of GTA 5 because I never tried and just held shift. I'm glad to see it gone but I wonder if there'll be an option to bring it back if you prefer it.

6

u/RocMerc * 9h ago

Even worse on a horse

2

u/FISTED_BY_CHRIST 8h ago

Right? This is great news

3

u/ZeektheFeek 7h ago

Yeah. Added a sense of realism to these games that I really liked. I hope there will be a setting to change it back to that way.

0

u/bajaxx 7h ago

exactly, people would rather the game be dumbed down and feel like any other game than have a feature that adds a sense of realism and immersion that makes the game unique. praying there’s a setting to change it

2

u/dietkid 6h ago

how low of a bar for intelligence could you possibly have to think pressing a button makes someone stupid

0

u/bajaxx 5h ago

when did i ever allude to that? if you had any form of reading comprehension you would know that dumbing down just means simplifying and not that it’s made for people that are stupid

2

u/dietkid 5h ago

the fact that you're arguing this point to death and calling people retarded. spam sprint in your mind to make it do something more productive

1

u/bajaxx 5h ago

i was bored

-2

u/Thatoneaccoynt 7h ago

brother this game is quite literally a crime simulator where the cops domt investigate or remember you after youve driven too many blocks away, what about this “experience” screams realism? and if it’s real you want you can also very easily walk outside and run for real

3

u/ZeektheFeek 7h ago

Have you seen the updated wanted system. It's definitely more involved than just hiding a few blocks away now.

-1

u/bajaxx 7h ago

brother don’t hit me with the go for a walk outside if you want realism. tap to sprint was one of gtas defining features. this isn’t complaining about the hand not actually grabbing a door handle or any other trivial shit, it’s about changing a feature that’s been in every gta. also gta is known for its realism, it’s what this entire games mission statement is

→ More replies (15)

1

u/Webborwebbor 7h ago

The reason why people tapped x to sprint was because GTA 3 had you use “hold x to sprint,” but your character had stamina so it would obviously deplete your stamina when holding it down. Everyone collectively (yet independently) figured out “oh, if i just tap x, it reduces how much stamina i use and i can sprint longer.” Eventually rockstar and other games adopted “tap x to sprint.”

The whole idea of everyone collectively learning something independently like that is funny cuz its almost like how civilizations all discovered fire independent of one another. Except it was grand theft auto - civilizations great next discovery after fire!

1

u/Embarrassed_Ad_6098 3h ago

Facts. This all started with gta 3, vice city, san andreas tapping sprint to avoid running out of stamina fast lol

1

u/MisfitAnthem 7h ago

Yeah, I hated it. This is great news actually.

1

u/Georgxna 7h ago

RDR2 riding a horse was spamming x. I liked it

1

u/encroachingtrees 7h ago

I see people complaining (rightly) about spam x to sprint all the time, I’m so confused right now

1

u/Maximum-Ad879 7h ago

I'm shocked as well. It was annoying in RDR2. I can't think of any other game that would do it this way, for good reason.

1

u/Icy9kills 7h ago

It breaks their immersion lmao. God I hate that word

I'm genuinely blown away at how many people are sad it's changed

It just feels wrong when playing Rockstar Games without it.

spamming x to sprint was only wired for playing gta in my brain

1

u/Benji_4 6h ago

I don't like it, but can understand why it's there. The speed at which you tap the button controls how fast you move and how fast you consume stamina, which can be useful for some aspects of the game.

In GTA it matters less except for the triathlons in 5. In RDR2 I'm mostly holding to have my horse trot, but when I want to haul ass I can just spam the button.

Glad I’m not in the minority here. I always despised it, especially on the triathlon missions. My thumb still hates me

1

u/cubecasts 6h ago

Idk I just hold shift

1

u/Competitive_Suspect5 6h ago

Yeah suprised me too. I eventually had enough and changed it to hold X/A to sprint.

u/FanDowntown9880 6h ago

Rockstar fans would like shit from a butt if it was realistic and immersive

Yes we do

u/spicysenpai6 5h ago

It’s basically second nature whenever I play a R* game 😂

u/Remote_Display_4914 5h ago

Rdr2 broke my controller spamming it so much

Its more a case of being a little sad that the traditional rockstar mechanic is taking its leave. Its better, pressing l3 to sprint is wayy better, but i cant lie that nostalgia isnt telling me to be a bit upset about it.

1

u/rycerzDog 4h ago

Spamming X is ass, but you always had an option to change it to just hold. L3 toggle is a million times worse.

1

u/IAmASphere 4h ago

I did! I enjoyed that it made sprinting feel taxing like it would in real life, more instantaneous feedback of lack of stamina than a toggle would give. It worked well in GTA4 because of how dense that game was, in GTA5 and the more open games that followed it it’s more of a nuisance when you’re traversing large open areas with no vehicle nearby to hijack.

I was impartial to it. Part of me liked it because it was a part of GTA for so long. I think it also added a slight but if tension when running away from cops. You ended up starting to slam the button to gtfo. That being said the first time I ever played a GTA on PC I very quickly stopped liking it. Pressing shift over and over again with my pinky fucking sucked.

No I hated but I'm so used to it now

u/GreyCaat 3h ago

I'm so mad about when they introduced hold to sprint in GTA V but had the normal stick input no longer be normal walking but SLOW RUNNING which makes walking around imprecise. WHY ROCKSTAR?????? IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO SIMPLE

1

u/MRSHELBYPLZ 3h ago

Yes? It feels more immersive like I’m actually running for my life from the cops 😂

1

u/enigmatic_dankness 2h ago

It's not that I liked tap x, it's that I despise L3 for sprint. Especially holding it.

1

u/AutumnWisp 2h ago

One of the first things I do with a new game is check accessibility options for a "change repeated presses to hold." I hate spam tapping buttons.

1

u/Paperweight22 5m ago

The moment I discovered you can change it to hold instead I never went back.

2

u/Bonus_mosher 7h ago

on the day of the extended look, there was a post over on the main GTA sub asking what people were hoping for, and this was my comment!

So this post has filled me with joy haha. We won, gang. We won!

You've been able to change your controller setup for a long time in gta5

1

u/Just1ncase4658 8h ago

It's kind of a nice rush when you're being chased. Most exercise I've had in years.

1

u/MickeyGrandia 8h ago

Grew up with it so yeah

u/b3rndbj 8h ago

So dumb in a game where running is default mode for everybody. Hurts my RSI like crazy, had to stop playing RDR2 after a while.

u/drafo1765 7h ago

I loved tapping x in rhythm with the horse's gallop in RDR2

after changing it to l1 i was okay with it, but only reason people actually like it HAS to be nostalgia of some sort, if i could just tap l3 like in pretty much ANY other game would be nice finally
