Not really though? It doesnt infinitely scale with how fast you spam the button like people keep saying. Im replaying V right now. I constantly have to remind myself not to go so HAM on the A button because its not making me go any faster. I tap it 1/3rd as fast and im still running the same speed.
Im all for having both options but spamming a button to run is just annoying and wears on the controller
I played RDR2 not too long ago and there is definitely a very tangible range of speed based on how fast your tap. Obviously it's not exactly proportional, I mean nobody believes you'll go faster if you tap 10 times per second rather than 4.
As for wearing the controller, the most problematic part is the sticks, use of L3 to sprint is one of the things that get you to have stickdrift quicker. The ''wearing on the controller'' argument is not only dumb, it goes against you.
I genuinely think people that prefer the tap to sprint play little else than GTA. Because controller games going back to Nights on the Sega Saturn have allowed speed based off of how far the stick is pushed - and GTA, despite being a game that has released console first, has followed states of movement like it's on PC (crouch / walk / jog / run). The A tapping is actually what has kept me from revisiting their games because I have like mild joint pain LOL
It's not hard for me to conceptualize that your movement speed is determined by how far from the center the stick has moved, because basically every game aside from GTA does that at this point.
Doing it that way makes you never actually walk tho, unless you insist so much on actively roleplaying that you purposely hold the stick at the perfect angle to where it's walking normally and not jogging.
V's controls are perfect: you normally walk, if you just want to speed up you jog, only if you're actually in a hurry you sprint, and it feels physical as it should.
I don't roleplay in GTA, but when I played V story mode and online, it was extremely rare for me to roam the world without mashing the A button. The only time I stopped was because of running out of stamina.
Do you walk and seldom jog or run in prior games? The speed of walking in GTA:SA was at least faster than in V, but I don't remember IV's off the top off my head.
I would concede that GTA V's controls are not perfect, and are 100% a product of their time. If you actively need to move slow then you should go into crouch mode. Default walk speed looked good from what was visible in a couple of the leaked videos of GTA VI, and I hope that in missions it's the "classic" speed but when you have full control of movement that you move quicker.
Nah, I personally like a smooth movement that makes sense to the situation. I often just jog or even walk, unless I really want to move fast.
Crouching would do even worse in that sense, since it would just look funny.
I wouldn't say a product of their time, but rather IMO something that felt much more refined compared to all the random indie games that use the exact same controls you said, and indeed look all funny and not smooth at all, but I understand wanting more accessibility if you always run anyway.
Either way I hope there is a toggle in the settings to get the old controls back.

x tapping is so much better for a game like GTA... You can control your pace with more precision instead of walking/running only.
