No mashing is great for accessibility, but for control it’s not.
Also at least for me, pushing the stick down or continuously holding it down while wiggling it around is awkward. Mashing isn’t fun either though.
Edit: I forgot about this because I just do it subconsciously, but you can control speed on a joystick by controlling how far you tilt it. This is why controllers/joysticks are great for racing games and driving in games. So at least on console or with a controller it will be fine, you’ll still have the control you need. I do still wonder how it’ll work on PC however because you can’t exactly just push W down lightly.
Man, I always found that so annoying when it's like that in games. If I want to walk, I should be able to walk without having to carefully push the stick forward at all times
Yeah that makes sense, and from minimum tilt to maximum tilt it could just blend between walking and jogging. It could even be that minimum tilt is walking, middle tilt is jogging, and full tilt is fast jogging / slow running. You have to be careful with how many thresholds you squeeze into the tilt though as it will take finer and finer motor control, so will start leading to accessibility problems.
Is this my takeaway, people dog the mechanic, but it had some layers of depth to it that could lose a bit of it's feel if it transitions to a more generic input.
Mashing sprint needed accessibility improvements, not an overhaul. I'll reserve judgements until I actually get my hands on it. It could feel vastly better.

But how does this affect sprint speed?
Previously you could:
Do you only have one mode of speed now?
