Hi all! I have recently arrived in Geneva, and I found a long-term apartment, but the move-in date is October 1st. I expect a few large suitcases (well, 5, to be precise) to arrive soon, but I'd like to store them somewhere until my move-in date. My current AirBnB is way too small for that.

Do you know of a temporary storage place where I can store my things for 2-3 weeks? Ideally somewhere in the Paquis area.

Hey everyone,

I'm early in talks with a company in Geneva, we're really just at the first stage (one HR call so far, nothing signed) and before I go further into the process I want a more realistic read on things from people who've actually lived it, because on paper it looks fine but I don't fully trust my own back-of-envelope math.

I work in corporate finance IT, mostly planning/budgeting type projects with some project management on top, based in Paris at a tech company. Current package is around €130k gross a year (100k base + 30k variable). We're expecting our first kid end of January, and my wife isn't working right now, she also lives in France on a French residence permit, being originally from North Africa (her French citizenship application is in progress).

The offer

The offer being discussed for Geneva is CHF 140k base (paid over 13 months) plus a 10% target bonus, plus some benefits (meal vouchers, contribution to health insurance, transport) that add up to something like CHF 3k a year. All in, that's roughly CHF 154-157k gross total.

Is it actually a better standard of living?

Is this genuinely a better standard of living once you factor in Geneva rent and especially health insurance premiums? I only just found out it's not an employer family plan like in France, everyone pays their own premium, including the baby. I've sketched out a rough budget and it looks workable but I'd like to check it against people actually living this, especially on a single income.

Cross-border or move straight away?

Has anyone here started out commuting from the French side (Annemasse, Saint-Julien, Pays de Gex area, that kind of thing) before fully relocating to Switzerland? Wondering if that's smarter while things settle down with the baby, or if it just adds more hassle than it's worth (taxes, admin, all that). Since my wife doesn't hold an EU passport, I'm also wondering if that changes the permit process on the Swiss side, whether we commute or move directly.

Timing with the baby

And honestly the thing stressing me out the most: the baby is due end of January, and if the process moves at a normal pace the start date would land right around then or just after. How would you handle the timing of all this — the move itself, a permit for my wife (and the baby too, given her situation), parental leave (Swiss vs French, I honestly don't even know how that works), house hunting remotely with a newborn in the mix? If anyone's moved to Switzerland with a very young baby or right around a birth, I'd take any war stories you've got.

Why Switzerland

For context, beyond the money Switzerland genuinely appeals to me for real reasons — healthcare, education, economic stability, how the country runs democratically. But I'd rather go in with clear eyes than just chase the idea of it.

I am a woman in my 30s who recently relocated to Geneva, a few months back now.

I have been single for a while and am starting to think it might be nice to go on a date again, and eventually start seeing someone.

So far in my lifetime, I have never used dating apps. I have been fortunate to meet people organically, through social groups, hobbies and volunteering, etc. Generally speaking, I dislike the highly curated and overly consumerist vibe of the apps, and if I can go without ever having to use them, I totally would. I do have to say that this means I have also spent quite a bit of time single (which has been completely fine, I have a full life and good friends, I love my job, etc.). The idea of having romantic love in my life again though is nice.

What people in Geneva so far have been telling me is that dating off the apps here can be super challenging. I do see that a lot of the fun is organised fun anyway, through GoSocial and such, and not necessarily spontaneous and organic. For context, I have been able to make friends, particularly through run groups as trails is one of my favourite hobbies and a real passion, and that has worked out really well for finding a community. However, dating is obviously a bit of a different ballgame.

I wonder if any of you on here have been able to find a date/partner off the apps, especially in your 30s, simply through being active socially. Or is dating off the apps a pipe dream in this day and age, and I should accept that times have changed haha?

Hey everyone, my partner and I are looking to move in to Geneva and looking for a place that can accommodate a young family with young babies, easy commute from Geneva to out of town (mostly Lausanne).

Originally we wanted to live in Eaux Vives due to park, lake vicinity. We like it a lot there, but it’s relatively distant from daily commute to train station (and also a bit too noisy/trendy). We really loved Carouge, but it’s also a tiny bit far. Paquis/Grotte are cool, but we wanted something a bit safer. We are new to Geneva so sorry for stereotyping areas like this!!

We are trying to find a quite (yet not dead) neighborhood that we think can be our permanent home.

Quick question: Have you ever seen any construction work taking place on the section near the end of the highway/Vengeron interchange?

It’s a little frustrating to drive through here at 60 km/h without ever seeing a piece of construction equipment moving or any workers on site.

It feels like this construction has been going on for years and nothing has changed.

Any info on what’s going on and when it will finally be finished?
