Wife and I went back to GNP this summer after falling in love lasr year! Park gets better each time!!

Driving to glacier tomorrow after I tour montana state university, me and my dad are staying at under canvas, were planning on doing highline on thursday and grinell glacier on friday. Is there anything we should know, and tips, small other hikes we can do while were out there. Anything helps!

I will be glacier national park next week. Im so excited as I have just spent 9 weeks studying this park for a college course! Now I have been wondering about parking this time of year. Is it rough? I noticed there is a three hour limit at logan pass but believe that time frame ends on the 7th. Any tips? Im really trying to get the most out of this experience (as is everyone). After spending so much time learning about the history, I dont want to mess up and not be able to enjoy.

Set an alarm last night to wake up and attempt to get lodging inside the park for September 2027. Well the website basically became useless for the first 5 minutes it opened and then sold out of nearly every date with in the next 2 minutes.

Now that I know inside the park lodging isn't happening, what is your favorite options outside of the park? I still want to be close to the entrances. I'm mostly concerned with the east side. It'll be a group of four adults. Hoping to keep it around $400 a night. I appreciate any suggestions!!

Hi all! We are looking for any ideas for one extra day in glacier. We have currently planned for grinnell hike, kayak at lake McDonald and avalanche lake, whitewater rafting, going to the sun road, Logan pass / hidden lake trail, explore many glacier (staying one night at hotel). We have one last day (this Sunday so expect may be busy due to LDW / looking for something could be less busier comparatively) and we will be staying in west glacier. Any suggestions on something to do for Sunday? We were going to do Two Medicine boat tour + a shorter hike, but the boat tour is only available at 3PM - is that too late? Thank you!

I see it mentioned that "the largest 10 campsites accomodate 25' RVs". Ok great. But which are these sites? How do i book if i don't know which are the large ones?

Hi everyone! We’re planning a family trip to Glacier National Park Sept 5–8. We'll be visiting with our 8-year-old son.

Our current plan is:

Sept 5: Many Glacier area + I’m hoping to hike Grinnell Glacier while my family does some shorter hikes/explores Many Glacier

Sept 6: Going-to-the-Sun Road, scenic stops, Logan Pass/Hidden Lake, then camp at Apgar

Sept 7: Kayaking on Lake McDonald + hike Avalanche Lake

Sept 8: leave camp and Head back to SLC

We have Apgar Campground reserved for Sept 6–8.

I’m seeing rain and a possible cold front in the forecast, so I’m starting to wonder whether camping and doing these hikes will still be enjoyable, especially with an 8-year-old. We have decent cold-weather camping gear, so the temperature itself isn’t my biggest concern — I’m more worried about spending the whole trip in rain, wet trails, poor visibility, and missing the mountain views.

For those familiar with Glacier in early September, would you still make the trip with this kind of forecast? Is Glacier usually worth visiting in rainy/cloudy weather, or would you postpone if you had the flexibility?

Also curious how reliable the forecast tends to be 4–5 days out given how quickly mountain weather changes.

Ok. My husband and I are coming back to glacier with a plan (hope) to do the following:

Highline Trail (must do)
Grinnel Glacier
Hidden Lake

Under consideration:
Ptarmigan Tunnel
Cracker Lake
Siyeh Pass

We came in June of this year and I immediately regretted not staying longer (tacked 4 days onto the end of a trip to YNP and GTNP). We only spent a day in East Glacier because of how early it was and because we biked GTTSR from the west to the Wailing Wall so I want to make the most of our time there next year.

My question is - ~July 20th or Labor Day. It’s just the adults going so July works as I can drop the kids off at my parents for the week. Labor Day is more limited, I would need someone to fly to us to take the kids to school. I’m also concerned about crowds and wildfires for Sept but trails not being open for July. What would you guys do? Feel free to also comment on my “under consideration” trails.

What a disappointment. Researched, read tips, logged in early, knew what I wanted, and still not one room reserved for September 2027. Had rooms for the 7 of us in my cart, sped through the credit card info etc, and still got the error, items no longer available. I was on the site the second of 12am MST. Guess I'll be stalking their site hoping people cancel the extras they don't want as quickly as possible. Xanterra needs to update!! Didn't have this at Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion or Bryce. The tips and information the people in the group share is invaluable for planning purposes. Hopefully we'll find something. Thanks for letting me vent!!!

Caught the Milky Way peeking through those rugged peaks. Moments like this remind me why I love stargazing in the mountains.

My fiancée and I are planning to start the Grinnell Glacier Trail around 9am tomorrow and wondered if anyone else would like to join up to make a slightly bigger group for bear safety/peace of mind.

We’re both in our 30s, are reasonably fit hikers, and both carry bear spray. We prefer a relaxed pace with plenty of stops for photos and to enjoy the views rather than rushing through it.

If anyone has similar plans and would like to hike together, let me know!

Hello everyone. As the title suggests, I’m a solo hiker, planning on doing Grinnell, hidden lake trail, avalanche lake trail and just generally make the best of my time at Glacier. I’m a little nervous about doing these trails in bear country by myself and would love to have a buddy joining me in case there are other solo hikers. Please DM me if you’d be interesting in joining. I think it’s two slugs and I assume they’re mating maybe? But what are those weird things coming down from them?

Edit- They ARE mating!! Apparently the dangly things are their sex organs. They’re leopard slugs, so they’re hermaphrodites and they suspend from a slime rope and then entwine and dangle their sex organs together underneath them (they come out near their mouths which is…interesting)

I noticed nowhere in or around the park had this for sale. Found a bookstore in downtown Whitefish and they had just got a delivery with a few of them. Can't wait to read it on the plane tomorrow.

To the lady in the black Toyota minivan on the afternoon Monday 8/24. This was west of Logan pass. If you weren't throwing a tantrum, pulling into the oncoming lane, throwing your hands in the air and screaming. You would of noticed that 3 black bears ran into the road. This was a mom and her 2 cubs. One was struggling to get up the hill.

This was absolutely the coolest thing I've ever experienced. I've been to Glacier 5 times, Yellowstone & Tetons once. We saw 3 Grizzlies last yr in Yellowstone and had a close encounter with 3 big horn sheep in GNP 2013. This was still the most amazing thing I've seen in the parks.

I know in Yellowstone, when you see cars stopped in random spots, you can bet there is wildlife ahead. The parks are so magical, why are we in a hurry?

Ive been told that Apgar beach is the prime location for sunset. Apgar is on the southwest corner of the lake. If the sun sets in the west wouldn’t I want to be on the Eastern side of Lake McDonald to get a view over the entire lake? Am i somehow fundamentally not understanding how sunset works? I feel like a complete idiot right now 😂

Saw this beautiful bear from afar in Two Medicine on 8/27/26. Is it a grizzly or black bear? The long ears are throwing me off! But I saw younger grizzly bears can have the longer ears. We were pretty far in a car, so couldn’t see a distinct hump from our photos. Either way, happy to see this pretty bear. We barely saw any wildlife our trip then came across him/her!

Life changes and I have the opportunity to go on an extended 4-6 week solo roadtrip. Not quite solo, I’ll have my dog.

Is GNP, specifically Road to the Sun something to do just by car? Traveling by car with a dog, is there enough to explore for 2-3 days? Longer? Is the weather amiable the 1st week of October? Is there any place outside the park I can let the dog run (Vizsla)?
