Opinion 5 Times I Felt Bad For Rachel

I've been rewatching glee lately, so here is yet another glee post from me.

  1. When Finn stood Rachel up for the yearbook photo. I get why he didn't want to do it, but he promised her he'd be there and then let her sit there alone, looking sad and pathetic when all Rachel wanted was for glee club to be her big thing. She wanted glee club to be taken seriously and to have a picture in the yearbook, and Finn couldn't even do that for her.

  2. When Jesse and Vocal Adrenaline egged Rachel, I felt so bad for her. She just had her heart broken(for the second time that year. Finn was the first time) and now she's being humiliated by the rival glee club and her ex boyfriend.

  3. When Finn broke up with her in the second season. I know it was her fault because she cheated on him, but, imo, it was clear that she really regretted it and that she loved him. She just looked so sad.

  4. When she choked at her NYADA audition. She'd worked so hard for it only to choke when it really mattered. It might have seemed like nothing compared to what Quinn was going through(being wheelchair bound), but the apparent loss of a lifelong dream has got to be really devastating. Especially because it's all she ever wanted to do. Her future seemed over. I don't blame her for being devastated.

  5. When her TV show stint in LA didn't work out. She comes back to Lima with her tail tucked between her legs and is embarrassed that she tried to push all the bullying during high school aside by telling herself that she'd make it big and now she's a failure. And then, throughout the whole season, she's so scared that she won't ever get it all back, and is scared to even try. It was sad watching someone who used to be so confident in her abilities get so down on herself and think she's nothing but a joke.

Rant Finn’s washed-up jock storyline

Ok, maybe I had a very different high school experience than most people, but it always throws me that people say Finn’s S3-S5 storyline about not knowing what to do in life was super realistic and true to how teens act. I watched this show as a child/teenager, and everyone I knew had it together more than Finn. He just continuously fumbled around.

For example, he had access to a guidance counselor, whose whole job was to assist him in finding what he might like to do, but he never booked an appointment by himself. I remember being a bit clueless on applications myself, so I went to my GC, who listened to my interests and gave me options back. That’s how I picked a college. Finn tossing all Emma’s pamphlets out because college won’t give him the same thrill as fans cheering for him isn’t normal teen stuff… it’s soon-to-be-washed-up jock stuff. Most teens aren’t used to standing ovations or roaring crowds in the first place.

Finn had a lot of opportunities, but he discarded them all cause they wouldn’t make him feel young and popular forever. Pool-cleaning with Puck in LA might’ve given him the chance to travel, make money, and have some fun while he figured things out. Fixing cars with Burt would’ve given him more father-son bonding time, money, and some experience under his belt in case he wanted to make a career out of it. The army is a ridiculous choice for Finn, but he went with it over a more practical option, cause he wanted to become a hero.

Yeah, you could say this is normal. I get why a teen boy would want to be a war hero over a small town mechanic. The thing is, Finn continues not taking care of business for two more seasons. After failing at the army, he could have gone back to Burt and asked for the job, but instead he just complained more about not having anything to do. I’ve watched the show in elementary, middle, and high school, and every rewatch, I think it’s incredibly dumb to sit around moping, when your step-dad wants you to take over his business. Maybe he didn’t want Burt’s business, but constantly saying he had nothing going for him, when he very much did, was so whiny and lazy.

He just seemed to have no tenacity, when it came to his future. He spent most of S4 teaching but never considered that could be a new direction in his life, until Marley (who wasn’t even really close with him or anything) told him to man up and get an actual degree. Marley was also a teenager, so theoretically, she should’ve been just as clueless about picking life paths as Finn, but she wasn’t. It made him look dumb to need someone else to go hey, you like teaching? Teach.

When Finn went to get his degree, I thought great, he’s finally found something. Genuinely, good for him. But then we see him in college, and he’s slacking off. Puck, of all people, has to tell him to care about school. Seriously? Why does he need a new pep talk every season? Why can he never just be proactive himself? Why is Puck, the delinquent who almost flunked out, showing more work ethic than him?

I’m not saying he needed to discover his dream at 18 or anything, and I can admit the other characters succeeding as quickly/as well as they did was unrealistic. But I don’t get the idea that Finn’s storyline was all normal, teen stuff. To me, he was behind in a lot of ways and always needed a little coddling/extra encouragement. Again, the washed-up jock stereotype comes to mind. He spent 4 years focused on nothing but popularity, girls, Glee, and football, and was thrown off guard when reality hit

Opinion 5 Times I Felt Bad For Santana

  1. When Sue leaked the set list at Sectionals in season 1 and everyone assumed that it was either Santana or Brittany. I get why people wouldn't trust them, but I still felt bad, especially when Santana admitted that she liked being in glee club and that it was the best part of her day.

  2. In Silly Love Songs when Santana got called out for being a bitch and always insulting everyone. I get that she was mean a lot of the time, but it felt like everyone just dog piled on her and no one, not even Brittany, stood up for her. Some of those insults(like being disappointed that Quinn didn't have a lizard baby, or that Mr. Schuester should be in a 12 step program because he's addicted to vests) seemed like jokes, so I especially felt bad for her then. When Jesse and Vocal Adrenaline egged Rachel back in season 1, the New Directions were willing to stand up for her, even though most of them didn't even like her(sometimes within good reason). Why didn't they do the same for Santana?

  3. When Santana admitted her feelings for Brittany in Sexy, and Brittany rejected her. Brittany doesn't have to be with Santana if she doesn't want to be, but it was probably really hard for Santana to finally be honest with herself and with Brittany and then hear that the girl she loves won't leave her boyfriend for her.

  4. When Santana, the cheerios, and Quinn set fire to one of the purple pianos and Santana got kicked out of the glee club for it. I get that she did something shitty, but no one even stood up for her. Rachel sent someone to a crack house and didn't get kicked out. Finn chose his popularity over being in glee club multiple times. Why was Santana held to a different standard?

  5. When Santana was outed. Despite how horrible she was being with her fat shaming Finn, Santana did not deserve to be outed, especially not on national TV. And when she came out to her abuela, and her abuela rejected and disowned her, my heart broke for her. Edit: maybe the ad just aired in Ohio, so it probably wasn't actually on national TV.

THE "TOP 6 POLL" RESULTS ARE AT THE BOTTOM

As is a link to the Season 1 leaderboard.

--------------------

CLARIFCATIONS:

Any performances with the same quantity of votes: the earlier episode gets the better placement. First come, first serve for ties.

Any episode that was split into 2 polls will have 2 winners.

If a single episode had 2 polls, it is specified which song was in which poll.

All the songs marked "EXTRA" were all put in the same poll, despite being different episodes.

And as I assume is obvious, any song marked "WINNER" means it got 1st in it's initial poll.

THE "TOP 6" WINNERS:

  1. River Deep, Mountain High (2x04/Duets, 153/538 votes) WINNER x2
  2. I Feel Pretty/Unpretty (2x18/Born This Way, 134/538 votes)
  3. Valerie (2x09/Special Education, 121/538 votes)
  4. Blame It (On The Alcohol) | (2x14/Blame It On The Alcohol, 50/538 votes)
  5. Landslide (2x15/Sexy, 49/538 votes)
  6. Marry You (2x08/Furt, 31/538 votes

Welp! Despite being the highest voted of the season and tied for highest voted across all seasons (so far), I Feel Pretty/Unpretty, when put against all the season's favorites, only landed 2nd. Which means River Deep, Mountain High becomes a x2 winner and will get it's chance at being 3x winner after Season 6's Top 6 (as the final Top 6/the final poll of this poll series will be the winner of each Top 6 against each-other).

Landslide and Marry You both remained so close til the very end (obviously) that I couldn't even place them until the poll fully ended, that doesn't happen too often.

While the whole board is being saved till the very end of the poll series, the current Top 10 and lowest 10 across all seasons will be highlighted in the comments, just to get a glimpse of current standings.

We're taking a 1 week break and then Season 3 starts next Tuesday! (September 8th)

Discussion My Top 5 Mishandled Glee Characters

I can count on one hand the characters that weren’t done dirty by the writers. But I’m going to count down my top 5 mishandled characters. This is all my personal opinion, I’m curious what y’all think as well.

  1. Mike Chang. Maybe this is because I’m a hardcore Mike stan, but the writers really said “what if we make Mike interesting for one episode (“Asian F”) and then reduce him back to being ‘other Asian who dances good’?” And ethnicity aside, Mike’s storyline is one of the most relatable ones. He has parents who want him to be successful doing what they want him to do, not doing what truly makes him happy. That’s a plot that’s unique to him. Why they didn’t dive into it, I will never understand.

  2. Tina Cohen-Crazy. Tina never got the chance to properly be interesting for me. She got her stutter plot line in S1, but then she kinda became a background character. I still remember being viscerally upset during “Props” when Tina had her crashout of feeling constantly sidelined to make room for Rachel’s ego and everyone, including her BOYFRIEND, told her she was overreacting. (Which, if my boyfriend was telling me I’m acting childish after I expressed I was feeling sidelined, I’d probably dump him.) Then they made her pursue an openly gay man and tried to turn her into Rachel 2.0. One Rachel was enough, no one asked for two.

  3. Quinn Fabray. Again, Quinn started in a very interesting place—religious good girl who makes a bad decision, gets pregnant, loses the support of her family, gives up her daughter, and spends a year trying to rebuild herself. Then S3 came around and the writers literally made her a skank. Then, she was actively trying to get someone arrested so she could have her child back instead of letting someone who genuinely loves Beth raise her. Then, somehow within a year, she’s going to Yale? Then a year later, she’s dating Puck again? Just like Mike, she had a very unique storyline—how do you rebuild when your life as you know it has been ripped away from you?—and the writers did nothing with it.

  4. Brittany Pierce. Unlike the others, she never got the chance to be genuinely interesting. Her dimness was funny at first, but then they made her into a neurotic genius? Her character became about her intelligence and her relationship with Santana. They could’ve leaned into literally anything else.

  5. Shannon/Sheldon Beiste. Making Beiste come out as trans in S6 kind of undid all of their previous development for me. Beiste was the epitome of tomboy for me—they presented male, they had male interests, but underneath, there was still a woman who wanted to be loved and didn’t want to be judged for not acting like a typical woman. Transitioning Beiste sends the opposite message.

Appreciation Post Cory Monteith was always my favorite singer on the show

Ever since I tuned in for the pilot and heard Don't Stop Believing. It was like a beam of light, I was like WHO IS THIS. I know it's largely agreed he doesn't have the strongest voice, and that's true (although it improves later on), but I've never heard a tone like his before. Is it just me or is it incredibly unique? Masculine, but also playful and cute. I remember the songs would come out before the episodes and I'd be super disappointed if Cory wasn't gonna be singing. Of course, naturally, I stopped watching the show when tragedy struck. Is Cory Monteith anyone else's favorite singer on the show? And, if so, can anyone actually recommend me someone who sounds like him?

Opinion Just watched the first four Season 1 episodes earlier as a Gleek in training! And I am loving the show so far!

For me the first four episodes are decent (for context, I have the series on DVD, so that means I watched disc one of S1). Although it's understandable why since it's literally the pilot episode, I found S1E1 a little hard to get into since it feels a bit more mellowed and tonally distinct (though again forgivable for reasons mentioned above) from the other three episodes that came after, though it explains the premise of the show well (like why Will wants to start a glee club at WHMS), and since I was watching it on DVD, I was also treated to the extended director's cut of the pilot with the extra scene of Will singing "Leaving On A Jet Plane" (something I heard about from other fans who have/had the season 1 DVD or the standalone pilot episode DVD).

S1E2 "Showmance" was where I got hooked though since it starts to feel more like how I'd expect Glee to feel like, mostly because that "Push It" performance by Rachel, Finn, Mercedes, Kurt, Artie and Tina was PURELY unhinged and funny AF. Like with the crowd's awkward reactions (especially from Sue who had a WTF expression on her face) but then there's both Emma and Principal Figgins just vibing along. We also get the "Gold Digger" performance here, which I often heard from the fandom officially kicks off the long list of cringy Will songs.

S1E3 "Acafellas", simply said, is where we get Sandy's famous "Who is Josh Groban?!" line (no I'm not saying the second half of that line). My favourite part of that episode that it makes ALMOST the rest of the episode fall flat by comparison (though I don't think it's a weak episode), aside from Mercedes singing "Bust Your Windows" (for a bit of Amber Riley appreciation) and the funny cameo from Josh Groban himself telling the Acafellas about the restraining order against Sandy which are the other two favourite parts of mine!

S1E4 "Preggers" is probably my favourite episode so far, mostly because of the storyline of Kurt trying out for the football team as well as the reveal that Quinn is pregnant. Also the scene of Finn and Quinn in the hot tub was funny with Finn panicking for reasons too crude to mention and Quinn's like "THINK OF THE MAIL! THINK OF THE MAIL!" (it's her actress Dianna Agron's line delivery that sells it for me and Cory Monteith playing the part of the panicking Finn quite well).

Anyways, these are my thoughts so far on Season 1. I'll do a full season review when I finish the remaining 18 episodes before moving onto Season 2. See you later, Gleeks! (BTW I am also curious to know your opinions on these first four episodes)

Discussion That scene in "Showmance"

Do you think Rachel would have had sex with Finn if he hadn't stopped? I know in Season 3 Rachel says she wouldn't lose her virginity until she'd achieved her professional ambitions, but in the scene it seems like she wouldn't have minded having sex with Finn if he hadn't stopped. What do you think?

Opinion Finn is a bad boyfriend

I’m currently rewatching for the first time since watching it while it was on. I have loved scrolling on here while watching to see what everyone’s thoughts are! I’m 3 episodes into S3 and my main thought is how much Finn sucks. I’ve seen a lot of posts saying that the worst thing Rachel did was cheating on Finn, but I just don’t think that’s true. It was very bad, but Finn going back to Quinn after breaking up with Rachel is basically just as bad. That was what Rachel was equally as afraid of.

  1. Crack house is way worse than cheating on Finn given the circumstances for Rachel
  2. Finn is a bad boyfriend to both of them

Question Why do people think Brittany at the lockers treated Santana bad?

So I’ve seen a few people say that Brittany treated Santana awfully by the lockers however I disagree Brittany didn’t handle it the best but she tried to let Santana down easily while sticking up for her relationship with arti.
