IMPORTANT Do you want your cards featured on the r/homemadeTCGs banner? Share it here to submit!

Hey, guys!
Since we have the new "No AI" rule, I figure this is a good time to update the banner and do some aesthetic housekeeping on this subreddit, which I acknowledge I should do more often.

If you would like your card(s) featured on our banner, please share your cards in the comments here. I'll include as many as possible, and don't forget to mention your TCG's name so I can give you credit. The banner cards will be rotated, so feel free to submit new cards even if you're already featured.

Image requirements: Decently high resolution image from a straight angle. No tilted looking cards. Any level of art is welcome. (I understand if there is a bit of tilt. It can be hard to get a perfectly straight photo.)

The names of the TCGs will be listed in a sidebar widget under the rules.
I will try to include as many as possible. When I am in the process of creating the banner, I will edit this post to indicate that submissions are closed. When I have time to rotate in new art, I will make a new post. Due to dimension restrictions, spots on the banner will be first come first serve because we want the cards featured to have legible art.
Remember: No AI art is allowed. We only want art done by artists.

Edit: I'M WORKING ON IT! No more submissions please.

Card Critique Visual overhaul changes to my TCG:

Hello everyone,

On my last post on this sub, I shared some minor adjustments to old card frame ideas that I had put on the back burner. The most common sentiment was that while the placement for information was novel, it was unintuitive. As much as I wanted to push back against that, I decided to give a more conventional layout an honest try.

To be completely honest, those who made that suggestion were 100% right. It makes the cards much easier to grok and parse, while still retaining the same features I wanted in my original designs.

As far as the rest of the overhaul goes, I wanted to go with a less-is-more approach. I removed the visual clutter in the text box for a minimal design that’s more akin to something Apple would have designed - I wanted it to be a much simpler and cleaner presentation, with strong colors being the primary feature rather than subtle hexagonal patterns.

One other core aspect I changed was implementing a symbol system on the top right of each card. This game plays as a combination between Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic, and so I wanted to maintain some aspect of their symbol designs on the card, while also providing a quick visual identifier between not just card types but also their subtypes.

That’s most of the visual changes made so far. There’s still a tad bit left to refine, but as far as the overall designs go, I’m pretty happy with the change of direction.

Card Critique Reworked my card layout after feedback — thoughts on the UI box direction?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I posted Hearth & Hollow here about a week ago and took in a lot of the feedback, especially around readability and font choice. We updated the font a bit, and this is where the card UI is at now.

Right now we’re a bit at a crossroads with the lower UI/text box area. Do you think it should stay cleaner and simpler, or would a bit of snow/frost detail help tie it into the winter woodland theme more?

I’d especially love thoughts on readability, how distracting the box treatment should or shouldn’t be, and whether the overall layout feels easier to read than before.

I made some new arts for some of the earliest card I made for my game. I think they are an improvement but some players still prefer the old designs. Which art direction should I continue in your opinion?

First one is the new art.

Advice Needed Changes that I have made for my card template design

Last week I posted my card template design and requested feedback from people of Reddit. Now I have made some changes and I couldn't decide which one I prefer more. The first image are the latest design (colors of the card are not final). The second image are the old design that I think could also work. The color represents the regions of the game that are tied to deckbuilding.

Advice Needed Need help with on board “secondary objectives” for my TCG

Right now I have been play testing my game a lot.
The game has a deck life and gravemana system.(Before i get lots of comments about deck life systems, I have a post about it already).

Those systems that I have made work really well together and I have been enjoying the play-testing with other people. But I feel like the game is really missing something.

There is a cool objective for the player (reduce ur opponent’s deck to 0), cool mana system (exile cards from the discard pile for mana cost), which creates a fun feedback loop of play cards to play more cards.

But for secondary objectives on board I feel like it’s lacking. For example of what I mean for “secondary objectives” I mean Digimon/Pokemon has evolving, riftbound has movement and battlefields, yugioh has summon mechanics. Things that players do that are imbedded into the “board” of the games mechanics.

My game is like a fast paced MTG in terms of how’s cards act while on the board. With a single number for play cost and the attack stat being the same as the health stat.

With this being said the gameplay is fun just feels like it’s missing something.

I have play tested with
- adding “leader” cards that give deck stipulations and give additional effects to build to.
- adding evolving
- adding battlegrounds that change the rules of the game.

- What are some ways that people have come up with their own systems on board?
- Are there other specific TCGs that I should look at for inspiration?
- (if your ok sharing) a system that you think would work for my game?

Advice Needed How do like my take on a"colorless" card type?

In my game there are going to be 7 "elements." One of which is currently being labeled as the Sun element. Most if not all Sun cards will have 2 abilities, light and dark.

Light abilities can be cast with any element/energy type as long as only one type of energy is used. For example if a light ability has a cost of 3, then 3 Fire energies can be used to cast it because only Fire energy was used.

Dark abilities can also be cast with any element/energy type as long as at least 2 different energies are used. For example if a dark ability has a cost of 3, then 1 Fire, 1 Ice, and 1 Lightning energy can be used to cast it because at least 2 different energies were used.

Decks skewed towards a single element will mostly be able to take advantage of just the light abilities.

Decks with an equal mix between 2 element types should be able to make use of both light and dark abilities.

Decks with a mix of 3+ elements will mostly be able to take advantage of just the dark abilities.

I really like the idea but the only thing doesn't sit quite right with me is that a Sun element only deck wouldn't be able to use half of it's abilities. I suppose having a good amount of Sun cards with only light or dark abilities would help with this feeling.

Advice Needed Unnamed strategic card game inspired in chess

Thumbnail
gallery
17 Upvotes

I present the card game I have been working on for the better part of this month, a strategic TCG in which you play in a 5x7 grid, cards can only move if they are "fueled", they meet this requirement if you spend the amount of fuel listed on the card, you get 1 fuel per turn and by using fuel refiners, or alternatively, sacrificing a card on the dedicated fuel generator zone.

Each card has a movement pattern, attack range, and a "stance break" condition, if this condition is met they are pushed back, you win by getting victory points, you earn 1 victory point for each card on "enemy territory" at the start of your turn

I need honest opinions on the card designs and advice on how to manage the game, where do I organize my cards and how can I automate editing and stuff like that, thanks :3

(for now cards have images I pulled from the internet, I avoid using Ai and I will get dedicated drawings for all cards when I can)

Homemade TCGs Tactics Creator TitaniumLegman Reviews Eikonic TCG

Thumbnail
youtu.be
6 Upvotes

Check out TitaniumLegman's thoughts on Eikonic TCG! The Indie TCG that funded in just 20 minutes on Kickstarter!

The basic rundown: Eikonic is a Tactical JRPG-style Trading Card Game where players take on the role of a powerful Eikon, build their forces, and battle it out with their opponents to see whose influence will shape the world.

It features positional mechanics, movement, and our unique "Combat Compass" that shows each unit's area of effect on the battlefield, and allows players to strategically combine their units' power to take on enemy forces.

Eikonic was heavily inspired by games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, Unicorn Overlord, Jeanne D'Arc, Naruto, and Duelists of the Roses.

We're really excited to see what you all think of this exciting experience and can't wait to find out which of you will become the ultimate Tactician!

Thanks again for your continued support! You guys are everything!

Advice Needed Improving the Field Guide and mechanics of Cyclemental. Humbling experience with playtesting.

Thumbnail

Hi all, after lots of playtesting and feedback, I've redesigned my rulesheet / field guide for my game, Cyclemental. To truly test it out, I gave a deck to a friend who hosted a party and asked them to record the session. It was humbling to see that an unguided drunken round could turn to chaos because I made too much assumption while writing the rulesheet. For example, the players didn't even realise that cards used are meant to be put into the discard pile. So many cringe moments but it motivated me to try to improve the field guide.

Changes

- Included clearer set up rules and illustrations, together with example turn and how a turn actually works,

- Attack mechanics now have more incentive because a successful attack yields you more card and preventing you to lose card. On the other hand, a successful defense / counter enables you to choose between the attack card or the counter card.

- Combos are now changed based on community and playtesting feedback and balancing between the elements.

- Card variety. Some creatures can act as double elements, some only has 1 instead of 2 weaknesses, and some has extra effects if the attack landed successfully. Previously every single element is the same.

- Character illustrations and graphics. Added a few tiny illustrations to make it easier to visualise the move / information.

- The Elemental Cycle has been corrected to be more accurate to the original philosophy. I initially wanted to make it easier to understand like popular elements but I thought it was a good callout from the community to stay true to the Wu Xing philosophy.

It's hard to fit everything into a double sided A4 paper. But honestly would love to get your first impressions / another pass at how easy it is to understand from reading through the field guide. Let me know if you spot anything that you don't understand or need clarification. Cheers!

Homemade TCGs Encouragement that you don’t need AI or art skills to make functional prototypes

Post image
124 Upvotes

I wanted to make something easy for PNP but still have each card feature unique art for easy recognition and reference when playtesting. Deciding on a certain style that you want to focus on, followed up with deep dives into sites like Vecteezy, can get you pretty much everything you might need. Some of the art I pulled may be AI without being labelled as such, but I tried as best I could to weed it out. The next step is ponying up for TTS and getting my starter decks imported there for online playtesting.

Homemade TCGs Doing final touch ups on art for Runes & Rivals

Playtesting has gone well these past few weeks. I think it’s safe to say what’s taking my time right now is testing and designing multiplayer formats for the game. During the process, I’m cleaning up the art for various cards so they aren’t blurry and I’m even giving some a complete redesign while I’m at it. I’ve had a lot of fun with this game and I can’t wait to bring it to everyone. I’m simply doing my best to take my time and stay focused on shaping the identity of the game. That’s about all I got for now. I continue to look through and enjoy everyone else’s projects as you are all doing awesome and it’s been a big motivator for me! Keep rocking, card gamers ✌️
