Big Shrimp's inaugural festival in Addison, NY. Who went?

TLDR; I switched from playing metal to jam music and have fallen in love with playing music again. Would love to discuss playing with anyone else that’s gone on a similar path as me!

I picked up bass at 15, and cut my teeth playing in metal bands. I’m still very grateful for the experience those bands brought me, however we all eventually started to get burnt out playing the exact same songs over and over again.

After taking a brief hiatus from playing music after my previous bands had broken up, I was asked to join a jam band a couple months ago by some buddies I know through Chicago’s DIY punk scene. I’m now feeling this excitement to play that I haven’t felt in years. The last few months have made me grow exponentially as a musician. Until I joined this band I never realized how much I had stagnated just playing metal. I had always thought in tab, now I’ve began to actually understand the notes on my fretboard on a deeper level. The improvisation is the most exciting part for me, not knowing where our songs are going, and being able to explore new ideas each time has been such a great feeling. It’s also been really cool listening back to my first jams with them to now and hearing our progression. We’ve really been focusing on listening to each other, our dynamics, and creating that tension and release we all chase.

It feels amazing to finally have a group of musicians that are at the same level musically, who also share the same drive, passion and goals. I think I’ve got a great future with these guys. We’re hoping to help bridge the gap between the DIY punk and jam scenes. We already got some great shows lined up and have releases planned!

Neighbor is debuting their polished up Neighbor 9 big band show from a few months back, with horn section and female singers tonight at 7 on their YouTube page. Was cool to catch Rob's tune 'Hi Doggie' getting the big band treatment and looking forward to hearing this show again.

Has the nugs app been super glitchy for anyone lately. I went a while without using it and just tried to listen to a couple shows and I had to restart it several times to get it to work.

I have an opportunity to see them for free in a few weeks. I enjoy jam bands, but never been into the Dead that much. Is it still worth it if I can see them for free or will it most likely not be my thing?

Saw Natalie Brooke recently and was blown away. Go see this band if you have the chance, one of the best shows I’ve seen this year. Whole band smokes but the bassist has some of the best chops/feel I’ve ever seen after chasing ham bands for 20 years.
