Go back and watch more of George Carlin’s videos from the 80s. He basically predicted the way things went. The “Save the Earth” bit is especially prescient. "It's a big club and you ain't in it" is the modern Republican Party that was just getting going back then.

because reagans policies in the 80s laid the groundwork for a lot of this and a lot of folks saw it coming, but the repercussions of those policies took decades to land and as a commenter higher up noted- a lot of voters have pretty shitty memories. (fwiw, goldfish have decent memories)

A good chunk of Dems are there too. Really, that's beyond politics and more about status. Those who have it will do anything to stop others from accessing it. So, you blow up the bridge behind you, you pull up the ladder, you remove the bootstraps and shoe laces.

This country has been run by the rich since it's inception. There are moments when enough people pull their heads out of their asses and make smart, collectivist choices and that control ebbs (1820s, 1860s, 1910s, 1930s, 2008). But look how few and far between it is, and how the elite are doing better at preventing it as time goes on.

The truth is it's not a big group, it's just big enough to encompass the right people to prevent everyone else from storming the gates until the 99% get desperate and exasperated. And clearly, too many people in the 99% still find touching the stove (as he put it) acceptable if the illusion that someone will get their heads shoved into the stove more appealing than turning the stove against those who abuse it to protect their club.

It’s economic conservatism, that is the problem.

Both parties have economic conservatives, but only one party is ENTIRELY composed of economic conservatives. Vote accordingly.

It was George Carlin that made me realize I should have an "out" 10 years ago and I'm so glad I acted on it.
