Hi there,

I'm playing the white horse of Lowvale with my players, but find it too "epic fantasy" for mörk Borg. On the contrary when when played goblin grinder, it looks so much like discworld from Terry Pratchett.

Can't quite understand how to set a dark tone with the right amount of comedy. Want to catch the vibe of apocalypse is imminent but without the usuals of grindark literature tropes (real disgusting things and disgraces).

How do you setup the tone of your mörk Borg sessions? Some media inspo recommended?

Let’s start by saying I love low-fantasy settings. Settings where the healing (super)powers of high-level clerics are unheard of. Settings where people starve to death after the enemy army torched the barns; where “safety first” is not a thing and accidents on the job are common; where people suffers from all sorts of unaddressed diseases; and where Hollywood-white teeth are not a thing, because teeth rot and fall.

I have to say, these aspects are not typically covered by the random tables of NPC descriptors I normally use. To help covering this gap, here is a free d44 table (i.e., roll 2d4, do not add them, and keep the first number as the tens, and the second as ones).

Physical conditions to characterize your low-fantasy random NPCs (d44):

11 Skin maladies, e.g., blisters, warts, rashes, boil (abscess).

12 Withering with malnutrition and/or pale as a ghost.

13 Hard of hearing.

14 Vision loss, e.g., cataracts, missing eye, eye worms.

21 Severely scarred and/or disfigured.

22 Burn wounds, d4: 1 arm(s); 2 leg(s); 3 head; 4 torso.

23 Troubles speaking, e.g., mouth infection, swollen tongue (or throat, or neck), broken jaw.

24 d4: 1 Severe arthritis, 2 jaundice, 3 gravely swollen feet, 4 sweating & feverish

31 Abundant and very much visible parasites: Lice, fleas, or both

32 Breathing problem: Severe cough, asthma, catarrh, collapsed lung, etc. Could be consumption (tuberculosis).

33 Digestion/stomach issue: Vomiting, dysentery, colic pain, etc.

34 Open wounds and lacerations d4: 1 arm(s); 2 leg(s); 3 head; 4 torso

41 Broken or malformed bone d4: 1 arm(s); 2 leg(s); 3 head; 4 torso

42 Limb: Paralyzed, malunited fracture, or missing d4: 1 left arm; 2 right arm; 3 left leg; 4 right leg

43 Severe headache, confused, lethargic, or stupor

44 Oh, no!: Roll d4+1 times on this table; ignore this result; same results multiple times means a more severe problem

Here is more refined rules... for miniature skirmish combat been playing two or three game a day trying to get it more balanced art is mostly rough but thought I would share it anyway. I know I am in spam territory so won't post about it again but all constructive criticism welcome and appreciated.

I'm looking at the Getting Better rules, and I honestly worry that the players could end up with unreasonably high HP. Given Mork Borg's reputation, it might be silly to worry that it doesn't seem lethal enough, but looking at enemy statblocks from various places, an elite warrior tends to have around 12 HP, and most "bosses" have around 30. If players play cautiously for most of the game, it seems like after a few scenarios they could steamroll most challenges.

Is this concern valid? I have only run a few sessions at this point. I know of course that as the GM I can decide how often they level up, and can simply level them up more slowly if I am concerned about HP bloat. That is not my question, however. I want to know whether after a certain number of level-ups, if the system's lethality becomes compromised, regardless of how frequently those level-ups occur.

EDIT: Here is what I've decided to do. I am going to give players 1 XP for overcoming accomplishing minor challenges, 2 XP for overcoming major challenges. Players can spend spend Toughness x 2 XP for +1 max HP, and HP cannot exceed Toughness x 4. They can also improve an ability by 1 by spending 4 + (current score) XP. Would love to hear thoughts on this.

Some people has been asking how, if at all, our game is related to MÖRK BORG other than through using the 3rd party license and the ruleset.

Well, while it is a standalone hack, set in an underground world, you'll find references to MB throughout the book. Enough to to treat it as an unofficial sequel of sorts that is set after the 7th Misery - because the end of the world might be a start of a new one!

Let's look at Groblins - creatures that came underground with humans but mutated into something very different, yet still similar, to things you know and love (to hate) from MÖRK BORG.

But worry not, we're not going to copy-paste - all the lore will be original, just with occasional nods to the OG :)

Don't expect updates to be this frequent, I just happened to finish this today!

Long Pigs takes place on the inescapable train of Termina, where thousands have gone seeking riches only to realise there is no true exit. Passengers must navigate the unnatural temperatures and biological weather phenomena brought by a train full of the bodies of those who came before, baking in the western sun for centuries. This is a game about perpetual stagnation.

I'm gonna be working on this every chance I get, so stay tuned.
