Shame they couldn't refrain from using AI-"enhanced" stills to illustrate their article.

Shame it doesnt prove anything about the Elephant being real or being a pet either.
There is nothing in the write-up proving its real.

I am getting very tired of people who are extremely against AI. Particularly when they use environmental reasons. Because the majority of the time we are talking about people who complete ignore all the environmental impact of animal agriculture.

Not a "majority of the time", that is a made up factoid and you know it. I love people who are extremely against AI and tired of those who are for it a long time ago.

If all the people against AI would follow the same logic and be against the other industries who are draining our natural resources for the sake of profit, I wouldn't be saying what I just said.

I don't do the water consumption virtual signalling stuff, I just hate the overreliance on it by incompetent people and the quality of results it produces.

You should go to the source of the information and let them know.

That way of thinking would see absolutely nothing accomplished for sake of social justice. Ever. "You're not allowed to voice your complaints about A unless you complain equally about B and C and D...". There's an endless number of causes that need immediate attention, being more tuned into one in particular doesn't take a damn thing away from other issues. Would you prefer people fighting the adoption of AI just not say anything, lest you feel they're not the perfect kind of outraged? Do you require them to say "I hate AI, but to be clear I also hate commercial agriculture and nickel mining and clearcutting and single use plastic and whaling and etc etc etc etc." for you to give their opinion any weight? What exactly do you want?

Yes, I do. If you against AI for environmental reasons, you also can reduce your impact on the environment and help animals at the same time.

8

u/tapsaff 5d ago

That's a wild take given AI is actively destroying habitats indirectly.

u/blueViolet26 5d ago

So is animal agriculture. Why do we pick and choose which one we are against? I am not asking anyone to love AI. I am against it. But I am also someone who cares about my impact in other ways.

I am not asking anyone to love AI. I am against it.

Which one is it? - you are not making sense and it appears that you're trolling.

This: Particularly when they use environmental reasons.Β

I think you forgot to change your alt accounts before posting that comment πŸ˜‚

The person you are replying to, blueViolet26 is a vegan, whose main reason for posting is all about starting conversations about animal agriculture, by highlighting "hypocrisy" and "gatekeeping" everyone else caring about any other concerns.

2

u/tapsaff 5d ago

That makes sense, thanks for the reality check.

I didn't know I was stopping you from caring about other things and acting like you do. I also don't post about veganism a lot. So the idea that my main reason for posting is to start conversations about veganism is wrong. I didn't even say anything about how this elephant was raised in captivity in my first comment. So, projecting much?

2

u/Timely_Community2142 5d ago

Never said you are "stopping" anyone from caring about other things. false narrative.

The rest are lies πŸ˜„ "animal agriculture" is basically your disguise for veganism. duh.

you just told someone "we don't need meat. ask me how i know" πŸ˜‚ duh

I don't have alts. You are trying to play gotcha with me when I added a qualifier to my statement.

6

u/Ok_Brain_1114 5d ago

We need food. We don’t need AI.

5

u/Timely_Community2142 5d ago

blueViolet26 is a vegan

1

u/blueViolet26 5d ago

We don't need meat. Ask me how I know.

9

u/shookney 5d ago

Ew not this attitude. Keep up the fight, but I ensure you there are people who care about environmental impact of animal agriculture. Especially younger people on Twitch tuning in Alveus Sanctuary which does good job educating on that esp with chicken and cow. They're growing further enough to do other stuff such as developing research to save certain animal from extinction.

Now with being said, fuck AI esp for environmental reasons. Let not suddenly turn the conversation back against it.

0

u/blueViolet26 5d ago

Of course there are people who care about the impact of animals agriculture. I am one of them. I am just sick of every single instance - things I have zero control over, being called out when I am pretty sure they aren't putting down that beef burger to save water.

8

u/Wareve 5d ago

I'm not.

And yeah, that's because they're not being distracted by irrelevant stawmen?

AI needs to be judged on its own benefits and detriments.

3

u/blueViolet26 5d ago

AI needs to be judged. So does animal agriculture. How does pointing out the inconsistency of your view point a strawman?

4

u/Wareve 5d ago

Because it's switching the conversation from one about AI and it's individual merits, to one about the relative merits and costs of Industries.

The conversation stops being about AI and starts being about cows, it stops being about the benefits and detriments of this new technology and it's incredibly broad economic ramifications, and starts being about it's hypocritical to yell at robots unless you're also cutting meat out of your diet.

It's a distraction and irrelevant to the core issues.

2

u/blueViolet26 5d ago

You started this conversation about what a shame they used AI-enhanced skills to illustrate the article. I am specifically talking about the people who are extremely against AI (to the point where they make comments about someone else using AI in their article) for environmental reasons. I didn't bring up the economic ones. I am on board in both situations. But I feel if you care about the environment and that is why you are against AI, you are hypocritical.

3

u/Wareve 5d ago

Which is a fine thing to feel.

But the act of bringing it up here only serves to pull focus from the issues being discussed.

This might not be your intention, but in effect, all it does is give a pass for people who already don't a shit about the environmental impact of animal agriculture, to not give a shit about AI.

You will convince exactly zero people to stop eating meat by calling them Hypocrites for disliking AI, but you might convince some meat eaters to stop caring about the environmental impacts of AI by comparing it to the cost of making their favorite foods.

2

u/blueViolet26 5d ago

Interesting because I am someone who became a vegan after being told it was hypocritical to care about animals and eat them. You are someone who is not vegan even though you seem to care about the environment. So, given our experiences and the fact that I know people will make all kinds of excuses to continue prioritizing their way of life over being morally consistent. You will never know when that seed will be planted. I will continue to point out the inconsistent in people's behavior when they reply to any comment I make about AI - when I simply posted a link to an article - and we both move on. Anyone who chooses to stop caring about things because a complete stranger is saying they are inconsistent is not my business. I will not stop talking about what I think is important because you think I am taking away from one cause when my intention is to expand to another one that not only harms the environment but causes the destruction of billions of sentient beings.

1

u/Wareve 5d ago

Yeah but you see how you're playing into the stereotype of vegans always bringing up how they're vegan in every single context because they view it as the highest moral imperative?

The term for what your vegan proselytizing is doing is "stealing focus".

2

u/blueViolet26 5d ago

Do you see how you are playing into the stereotype of not being vegan but trying to teach a vegan how they can be more appealing to you? It is funny how I would never have said I was vegan even you didn't mention anything about how shameful it was for whomever wrote the article using AI. 😜

Because the person you are talking to, blueViolet26, is a vegan. Of course they want to redirect the conversation.

1

u/jsrobson10 4d ago

even ignoring the environmental impacts of AI, it's still terrible at "enhancing" images, because it just makes shit up.

1

u/neontiger07 4d ago

People aren't ignoring something when they point out a different problem exists. Animal agriculture feeds people. AI does nothing that is required for people to live. Those two issues are nowhere near equal. You're clearly biased but I don't think you grasp just how asinine that line of thought is.

1

u/blueViolet26 4d ago

How is animal agriculture required for you to live?

1

u/neontiger07 4d ago

I didn't say that, did I? You're deliberately misinterpreting what I said. I said AI does nothing that is required for people to live, and that animal agriculture feeds people. The relation is that people need food to live, not that the only way for that to happen is animal agriculture, just that animal agriculture facilitates that.

So you're not here to have a discussion in good faith, I'll be blocking you.
