Politics West Medford! It's election day, don't forget to...

...pick up after your fucking dog, you deadbeats! Somehow it's worse than usual. If you are walking a dog, there's a good chance it's going to take a shit. Bring bags. Bend at the knees. Or the back, I don't give a fuck. Place bag over the shit, remove it from the sidewalk or grass. Tie it up, or don't. Bring it home, like to your home, and put it in the trash. Don't toss it in the bushes. Pretend you're a functioning and valued member of society for a grand total of six minutes a day.

Local volunteering opportunities?

Saw a post from a few years ago about this, but, well, it was from a few years ago. Any recommendations on local orgs that need volunteers? Our town website doesn't have a list; perhaps we should make one!

Single item mover

Hi, my 60 something brother recently moved back to Medford after living abroad for many years, and is setting up his condo. He bought a couch on Facebook marketplace that he needs moved. Just one item.

Does anyone have a referral to a couple of guys with a truck, or in the alternative, is anyone in the process of moving with a U-Haul or similar, and willing to do this small job for pay?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

City to Host a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day - September 12

From the city’s calendar:

The City will be hosting its third Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day event on Saturday, September 12th from 9am–1pm at the Andrews Middle School.

Residents will have the opportunity to properly dispose of common household hazardous items, such as oil-based paints, lawn/garden chemicals, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline/kerosene/diesel fuels and oil, household cleaners and more for a fee, payable by check or exact cash.

The following fees will be collected for disposals: $40.00 for ¼ trunk load,
$60.00 for ½ trunk load and
$100.00 for a full trunk load. Checks and exact cash will be the only accepted form of payment; credit cards will not be accepted.

For a full list of items that will be accepted and tips on how to safely transport your materials to the disposal event, visit the DPW’s page here

Got paint to get rid of? Note that they won’t accept latex paint at this event, only old-based. If you have latex paint, you can either let it dry out/harden, then dispose of in regular trash OR come to the city’s “paint shed event”, where they do collect both latex and oil-based paint. There will be two more paint shed dates this year - Saturday, September 19 and October 17.

Prenatal massage recommendations?

Anyone have recommendations for prenatal massage locations where they have the pillow/table with abdomen cutout so that I can lay on my stomach? My usual massage place is fantastic for normal massages, but their policy is they only perform side-lying massages for prenatal which is less ideal for me.

Thanks!

Organic Support or Forced Consensus? Analyzing the OR Medford Bloc Endorsement in the State Rep Race

Thumbnail

There is a competitive three-way race for State Rep. All three candidates are progressive, so I would have expected that our City Councilors and School Committee members would support different candidates. But all of the OR elected officials are putting their support behind Paul Ruseau, who will remain as an OR School Committee member if elected. 9 out of the 12 OR members signed a letter supporting Paul Ruseau, which Councilor President Zac Bears recently shared on his Facebook page (article is linked in the post). After doing some research, I noticed that the other three (Mike Mastroubani, Erika Reinfeld and Aaron Olapade) all gave financial contributions to his campaign. None of them gave contributions to the other candidates.

What do you think? Are all the OR candidates thinking for themselves or are their voted locked in for OR-candidates because of the Our Revolution Community Agreement:

We will work together to develop a detailed, aggressive local policy platform centered on working people, and will band together to support state-level legislation that enables us to pass local policies that address a changing Medford. We agree to avoid, to the best of our ability, supporting local, state, or national candidates or issue campaigns that would counter the ever-evolving platform.

And if they are all intentionally endorsing the same candidate as a bloc, what does it mean for non-OR aligned candidates who want to run for elected office on the state level in Medford?

Recurring dog sitter wanted for geriatric chihuahua in South Medford

Me and my wife are looking for a special kind of dog sitter for our sweet, elderly Chihuahua, Roseanne. Our dog has several health issues, so she needs someone who can stay with her continuously in our home rather than someone who simply stops by for a walk or visit. Most of the time, this is a quiet companion role: keeping her company, making sure she's comfortable and safe, and giving oral medications (pill pockets) as needed.

We're looking for a reliable, compassionate person for regular weekly care, generally 1 or 2 days per week for 4-8 hours at a time. Our schedule can be flexible, although Thursdays are our strongest preference right now. We're looking for someone who is comfortable caring for a very elderly dog and attentive to subtle changes in her behavior or condition.

Rosie is truly our baby, so finding someone we trust with her is incredibly important to us. $50/hr. Please DM me and we can set up some time to chat more.

I remember when Laura died. I didn’t realize Christine Barber passed a law in her name.

https://www.gottaknowmedford.com/opinion-christine-barber-made-lauras-law-possible-laura-was-my-wife/

By Peter DeMarco
It’s a very strange thing to knock on someone’s door and hope that no one opens it. Because if they do, you have to tell the story all over again, and that still brings you to tears.
This was me all summer as I knocked on hundreds of doors in Medford, Somerville, Cambridge and Winchester to ask people to vote for Christine Barber to be our area’s next state senator. “I’m here because Christine helped me pass a law in honor of my wife, Laura, who died 10 years ago,” I would say within the first seconds, before they had a chance to close the door on me. “You might have heard of it — it’s called Laura’s Law.”
Maybe you, also, remember Laura's story. She was having an asthma attack at 4 a.m. one September morning and walked to the emergency department at Somerville Hospital, which was just a few blocks away. I wasn’t with her, and she didn’t drive a car.
But everything went wrong for Laura. When she finally reached the front of the hospital there wasn’t an emergency-room sign above any entrance: all Laura saw were blank facades. Confused, she chose the wrong door, which was locked. With her last breath Laura called 911 for help and stated her location, but no one came out of the hospital to rescue her. Panic stricken, she collapsed moments later, never to recover. She was just 34.
How could a hospital not have an emergency sign above the right door? It was because Massachusetts had no regulations for anything having to do with getting people quickly and safely into emergency departments. Hospitals were left to decide on their own upon whatever signage, lighting, security staffing, surveillance cameras, or staff training they did or did not put in place.
I was a journalist with the Boston Globe, so I wrote every detail about Laura’s death in a very moving story called “Losing Laura.” The story was widely read but it didn't change anything: I needed legislation to do that, and I needed an awful lot of help, because I had no idea where to even begin.
This is when I met Christine, who was my state representative. (Laura and I lived in Davis Square.) Christine and our area’s current state senator, Senator Pat Jehlen, both said the same thing to me: “Tell us what you need, and we’ll do it.”
It took four, long years for Laura's Law to get passed and for actual, nuts-and-bolts safety regulations to be created so that no one will ever die as Laura did. During all that time, Christine was a rock for me to cling to.
She was always calm, which was so reassuring, because I was anything but calm. She was always upbeat — but was also a realist, telling me where things stood. She always made time for me, always returned calls, texts, emails – and there were a lot of them from me.
So many times, I would be in her office, or meet her in Sen. Jehlen's office, upset because the bill was taking months to pass from one committee to the next, or because the bill got altered in a way that upset me, or because I was convinced it would be opposed.
Christine couldn't promise me that we'd succeed, but she was determined that we would not fail. I can't tell you how much that meant to me.
Christine used all her resources, and I’m sure a good amount of her personal political capital, to get hospital leaders to meet with me, to pull in the support of other legislators, and to make sure I got a one-on-one meeting with the speaker of the House — the gatekeeper of all bills — without which Laura’s Law had no chance.
A legislative session lasts two years. If your bill doesn't pass within that time frame, it gets thrown away, and you have to start all over again. Laura's Law did not reach the House floor for final approval until literally the last hour of that 2-year session, at close to 3 a.m. Christine was texting with me all night, providing step-by-step updates. The session was live-streamed, so at times I could see her seated on the chamber’s main platform actually looking at her phone and responding to my messages in real time.
In the end, Laura’s Law did pass. Unanimously.
It’s why, a decade after Laura’s death, I have spent almost every weekend this summer knocking on doors and retelling her story over and over. It’s been grueling, but the primary race for state senate in the 2nd Middlesex District is hotly contested, as Sen. Jehlen is retiring. Christine needed my help; I needed to repay her.
If I’m lucky, I get to the end of Laura’s story before they close the door. I hand them Christine’s glossy informational card and ask them to go to her website, www.christinebarber.org, to learn about her policies and all she’s done for the community. Christine has served as state representative for large portions of Medford and Somerville (the district straddles both cities) for 11 years; she’s just trying to move up.
“I was a complete stranger when I walked into her office,” I say, “and she did everything she could to honor my wife’s memory. I can’t imagine a better legislator, or a better person, to be our next state senator.”
I hope you vote for Christine Barber on Sept. 1. She has an easy name to remember, Barber, like a barber.
I know Laura would have.
Peter DeMarco is a Somerville resident. He says, "September is the worst month of the year for asthma attacks, mainly due to ragweed pollen. The third week, called “Asthma Peak Week,” sees the most attacks of the entire year: It’s when Laura’s attack struck. Please spread the word, and if you’re having an attack, immediately tell someone."

Sofa Trash Disposal

Hi All,

I'm planning on chainsawing my sofa before I move out, and I was wondering how I'd dispose the trash? I know there's a medford recycling unit where I could drop things off for free, but any recommendations on what I should do with this?

Thank you.

Take mail in ballots to drop box now

Wanted to let everyone know that if you have a mail in ballot the Sec of State has recommended that you return it to the dropbox outside of City Hall.

Since ballots must be received by 8pm on Tues, Sept 1, he's warning that it's too late to guarantee the Post Office will drop it off in time.

As city councilors and School Committee members from Medford and Somerville, we know what it means to fight for our communities. Paul Ruseau has been our friend and fierce advocate for our schools and families over the past nine years, and he has won huge victories for Medford’s kids.

We are endorsing Paul for state representative for the 34th Middlesex District because we know he will deliver for our cities when he’s on Beacon Hill.

Catholic Schools within 30 min of Medford

Hello. This is a throwaway account.

My wife is a cradle Catholic, and I'm adjacent (Anglican). We just moved to Medford last weekend from the idylls of VT and London (UK), and it's time to enroll our twins in kindergarten.

All of the local Catholic schools seem to be enrolling. and to have room for us. We've made the rounds. The closest to us is St Rapheal, but a coworker of mine just told me that enrollment is alarmingly low there---3 kids in third grade? After all of the moving we've done in their young lives, I want our children to be in a school that will be around through grade 8 for them.

My coworker recommends St Agnes; my wife has heard St Joseph in Wakefield is good. We plan to join St Eulalia parish.

Impressions from visits: St Theresa Somerville and St Agnes seemed most welcoming. We are concerned about the pseudo-classical curriculum at St Rapheal especially in regards to Mathematics and it's curricular limits. We've nothing against the liberal arts; we're both humanities professors.

Your thoughts?

Cracksealing for real ?

Got the text at 5:24pm today about cracksealing happening tomorrow on my street and honestly thought it was spam or something at first because why would they give less than 24 hrs notice.

Now I see I got an email at the same time and it says that the work hours start at 7:00am. Glad I checked my email because street cleaning doesnt usually start that early so assumed the work wouldn’t be until after I left for work

Did I miss prior communication about this?? It’s ridiculous to tell people to move their cars or get towed barely 12 hours before. And the text didn’t even state the work hours to avoid parking. What if someone is out of town and left their car parked on their street??
