Have you guys ever had what I would call a "Midnight Diner Moment"?

I think I would classify it as one where food makes you emotional, not just because of the food itself, but because of the context and story that surrounds it.

Basically, if you can see an episode of the show based around the food you just ate and your experience with it, I'd consider it a Midnight Diner Moment.

Wrapping up my rewatch of season 4 (Tokyo Stories S1) from the blu-ray set. Here’s a look inside the set. Unlike the previous seasons’ box sets, the episodes on the discs are exactly the ones that are on Netflix. No director’s cut here. The set includes two featurettes - one going through the making of the season and the second, a chat with the actresses who play the Ochazuke Sisters. I haven’t seen this second one, but the first one is really interesting. There are moments they show the sets and it’s impressive how much the producers built in this season.

I was pleasantly surprised that the season 4/Tokyo Stories bluray set includes recipe cards for some of the dishes seen during the season. Here’s the tanmen without noodles recipe!

After finishing season 3, I started to rewatch the first Midnight Diner movie. One thing I noticed during this rewatch is visually, the movie looks a little different. I can’t pinpoint whether it’s the lighting, perhaps a change in camera, or something with the frame rate. But there’s something about the movie that makes it look a little bit more cinematic and different than the TV show. Anyone notice this too? Any reasons behind this?

After finishing the S1/S2 Blu-ray set, I just cracked open the used copy of the S3 set that I picked up. Thought I’d share what the set looks like!

While the S1/S2 set had a few different special features like a few behind the scenes featurettes, interviews with Joji Matsuoka and Kaoru Kobayashi, and a joint conversation with the actors who play Chu-San (who is not wearing his hat) and Kosuzu, S3 only includes two longer behind the scenes featurettes. I’ll report back once I go through it. Enjoy!

Update (8/29): There are two featurettes. One is an hour long and goes through a bit of behind the scenes for each episode. Lots of interviews with the guest stars, actors, and directors. They also have some moments showing the details of the set, which is quite impressive. The second featurette is actually a promotion that was shown on TV that shows highlights of the first featurettes and a trailer for the first movie.

Sorry, I've just realized Netflix doesn't have the first three seasons. Are there any links or torrents or similar to stream them?

I’m going through a break up. So far, cooking/baking and watching Midnight Diner have been the most comforting things for me.

Sometimes I like to imagine myself as one of the customers, and just slowly tell my life stories to Master. Maybe it’s just me, but it’s incredibly healing. Some episodes are just so soothing and meaningful, and frankly, relatable.

Anyways, my favorite dish so far is definitely butter rice! Hope everyone is enjoying the series.

Background: I haven't seen all the episodes yet (I even missed a few ones of the first three seasons), even though I started watching the series years ago, and haven't seen the films either.

During a recent trip to Japan, I ordered a mix of used and new copies of each season of Midnight Diner via Amazon JP. I thought I’d share a few pictures of the season 1 and 2 director’s cut set, which includes a slipcover and really nice packaging.

Now for those wondering about the subtitle situation: I originally thought that the set would have at least Japanese subtitles or closed captions that I could get translated into English especially since subtitles out there do not appear to be for this slightly different cut of the episodes. Unfortunately, the discs did not even have those. Instead, I’ve been using Whisper to create subtitles and appending them back to the episode MKV files I created from the discs. From a test I did with a supplemental feature on the disc (a great making of featurette about the show), it looks like it’s working relatively well with subtitles that are probably 85-90% correct. For those a little technically savvy, this could be an option for you.

Happy to share more as I explore this and the other seasons. With the show no longer on Netflix, glad i have a local option! Support Physical Media!

I see from posts that Midnight Diner might or might not be leaving Netflix. I feel like my best friends are moving away. It's been my comfort show for so long getting me through low patches in my life with its kindness and gentle humor.

I decided to mark the occasion with my most favorite episode Siba, Noodles. I felt this episode was the peak of MD, the most engaging Master had ever been, a retrospective and with a gathering of all the regulars at the end.

It's labelled incorrectly and I keep finding the Chinese remake.

Looks like they are putting all 5 seasons into Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories from August onwards.

When i do a Netflix search, Midnight Diner doesn't appear. Only Tokyo Stories - which is no longer labeled "leaving soon".

In a way, I suppose this is more convenient. Hopefully they'll add the new 6th season there as well.

So far, I have only watched the original series (my husband and I binged watched it this past week bc our friend recommended it and it’s leaving Netflix this Friday)

Is Katagiri Master’s son? He seems to know a lot about him (which he knows about all if his regulars) and there just seems to be a different connection between them.

I'm a big fan of Midnight Diner and some people have recommended me to watch Solitary Gourmet, and I found this website that had episodes of Solitary Gourmet and watched a few. Really enjoyed seeing Ryu (played by Yutaka Matsushige) as the main character of Solitary Gourmet, Goro, although he's so different from Ryu! Has anyone watched both, and what are your thoughts on Solitary Gourmet in comparison to Midnight Diner?

Old series but I’ll avoid spoilers. Interesting cameo S4. Now apparently the actor plays two roles in the series. I suspect that both are linked. It offers no clarifications about the Master and Katagiri. In fact it just adds confusion. But it’s worth exploring.

In a panic to finish before 31st July as it’s leaving Netflix in my country.

On July 24, Netflix merged Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (seasons 4 to 5) into Midnight Diner (seasons 1 to 3). Now Midnight Diner has five seasons (image 1 https://www.netflix.com/title/80113541 ) and Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is a "Remind Me" page (image 2 https://www.netflix.com/title/80113037 ).

I created a post about Midnight Diner (seasons 1 to 3) leaving Netflix on August 1. https://www.reddit.com/r/MidnightDiner/comments/1ulguxh/midnight_diner_leaving_netflix_on_august_1/ Midnight Diner (seasons 1 to 3) is still currently scheduled to leave on August 1, which can be seen in images 3 and 4, and the "Last day to watch on Netflix: July 31" notice still appears on the top left corner of the screen for a few seconds when any episode from the first three seasons starts playing.

The last time Midnight Diner (seasons 1 to 3) left Netflix on June 1, 2023, it returned to Netflix two months later on August 1, 2023, so the licensing agreement was for three years, since it is leaving on August 1 this year, unless the expiring licensing agreement is renewed before then.
