We're going to start pointing users towards the monthly threads for the following types of posts:

  • Services/skills you are offering
  • Local business raves
  • Local events and activities

Rules: - Must follow Reddit's TOS - Must be local to Nanaimo and the surrounding areas

Dover Bay Secondary Human Trafficking

I feel like I’m going insane. I was talking to my coworker this morning about way back when those teens were arrested at DBSS for being involved in human trafficking. But when I looked it up there’s literally nothing about it. I remember seeing the article vividly, it’s a photo of a cop car outside the front doors of the school. Am I insane or does anyone else remember this?? I believe it was around the 2010s.. I’m not sure but I know it was ages ago.

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is inadequate

It's a random Monday. The waiting room is full. The patient rooms are full. Even the hallways are full. The nurses are forced to carefully maneuver people on stretchers so they don't hit other people in beds sleeping in high traffic areas.

Signs are hung up around the waiting areas that read: "WE *CANNOT* PREDICT WAIT TIMES."

The staff are trying their best, but the sheer scale of people needing medical attention to small scale of the facilities is deeply disturbing.

I know Canadian health care is in a bad state, but this is ugly. Nanaimo is a decently large city, not some rural area. Our population was 90k in 2016, now a decade later, it's 130k+. Our medical services are not acceptable for our population.

I guess all this to say: don't need any medical attention. Stay healthy. And who can I complain to in the government? I am stuck here waiting for an unknown duration, might as well write some emails.

edit: Thanks to NRGH staff for their hard work and care. Nothing in this post is negative toward health care workers-- we need them, respect their labour, and they need more and better resources than this.

Just used hullo ferries for the first time, is it always this late?

The ferry arrived to Vancouver 20 mins late. Is that normal? I have to commute for school and this might be a problem.

Dog Trainer

We are getting a 9 month Presa Canario puppy from my friend due to some unexpected life changes he is going through. We have had a Mastiff dog in the past so we do have experience with large breeds. But, we also know that Presa Canarios are a livestock guardian dog and looking for recommendations on a dog trainer who has experience with this, or similar, breeds.

We are located in north Nanaimo but we are willing to travel outside of town.

Thanks in advance!

Somewhere to lunch and catch up

Hey everyone.

Heading in to nanaimo Thursday for some errands and a long over due catch up with a friend.

Looking for somewhere cute, not super noisy or over crowded, and yummy for lunch and a bit of girl gossip.

Any recommendations? Whats your most underrated lunch spot?

Looking to try something new.

Nanaimo Yogis - Help A Sister Out!

Hello,

I was attending Modo Yoga 5 nights a week for about 18 months but, unfortunately, the excessive heat wound up making me sick. I have been trying to find a new studio to no avail so Im going to share what I loved about Modo and hopefully someone has insights into a studio that isn't hot and fits the bill (I know Oxygen does but same problem).

I'm looking for a monthly pass instead of a punch pass or, like Red Door does, where you sign up for a 6 week series. I like the flexibility of taking a Saturday off but grabbing a class Thursday night instead.

I like Modo's 4 hour cancellation a LOT but would be fine with a studio that offers day of - the 24-48 hour cancellation window most studios require just means theres no flexibility if it turns out to be a beautiful day and I decide I want to go for a long hike instead.

I like the variety of classes. Sunday night yin was always such an amazing way to wind down the weekend but Friday morning hatha was a great way to start the day. It seems most studios offer lots of yin and restorative but I can't find anywhere that offers a mix of both.

If you know of this magical unicorn studio please link me, I miss it so much!

Thanks!

Lost my keys

This is a long shot but if anyone knows someone who found a bunch of keys on a University of Manitoba key chain, I lost them some time last week and I cannot find them. I've been to the dump, Nanaimo Ice Centre, Country Grocer on Bowen Road, and in between. There is a Chrysler key, and a Saab key on the keychain as well. Thanks

Anybody else have this sucky summer cold and wish their sinuses could be vacuumed out? I don't even have germy kids to blame it on.

Say your prayers and eat your vitamins kids.

Edit: it’s bronchitis 😭

Screen fighting for videos and films.

Looking to meet people (possibly martial art and gymnastic students or any interested individuals) who want to practice screen fighting for youtube videos and films. Looking to meet other filmmakers keen to design action set-pieces also. Any places that would be good to contact?

Old City needs another cool coffee shop

Obviously White Rabbit is the best, but wow it’s gotten so freaking busy on a consistent basis. The number of times recently that I’ve walked in and walked straight out again because of the line up, is a lot. It’s awesome that they have so much business.

Misty Pines has no seating and closes early. Bocca Cafe isn’t open on Sundays.

With all the new apartments, the neighborhood needs another coffee spot. That’s got a good creative vibe and aesthetic - no costco furniture and generic art. And good vegan and gluten free representation in the baking selection. Basically WR 2.0.

Just throwing out my wish to the Coffee Shop Gods to hopefully pick up on lol.

Edit to add: if anyone knows someone from JJ Bean, tell them the Old City Nanaimo ‘hood needs them!

Romantasy book club

Would any book girlies be interested in joining a little Facebook-based book club? 🥰
Just a fun, chill space to talk books, scream about fictional characters, share recommendations, and maybe collectively lose our minds over a book together once a month. 😂
No pressure, no strict rules, no “you didn’t finish the book 😡” energy — just good books, good conversations, and hopefully some new bookish friends! 🫶🏻
We could vote on a Book of the Month, have casual discussions, share our current reads, and of course… judge fictional men together. 😌📖
If that sounds like your kind of chaos, comment or message me and I’ll add you! 💕
