I made it through! ⚓️ (well halfway)

Hello, hello, hello! It’s me again, lol I’ve been on this subreddits for YEARS trying to join.

Went to MEPS Monday (08/31) as a SDP, I honestly did not think it’d be that smooth of a process! Yes, it was a TON of sitting and waiting but I didn’t mind it. Now spreading my cheeks got me, but my MEPS doctor was pretty cool! (we bonded over a common health issue our parents have/had). I got pee shy for the FIRST time ever lol but they let me drink water and walk back and forth.

Long story short: I made it through! I signed a contract for IT/ATF, received a little bonus with my contract, swore in and now I ship out to boot camp on Nov 24th! ✨🦃 ( I’ll look through the subreddit for any IT/ATF advice, and any boot camp tips on what to bring and not to bring / what to expect / hairstyles); but if anyone in IT/ATF would like to tell me their experiences or day to day, or any bootcamp advice/encouragement! Please feel free 💙

Do I have to swear in immediately or can I wait

I went through MEPS, but I needed waivers. The main job I want is AW. I scored an 89 and made it through MEPS without any physical issues. However, my recruiter told me I’ll see my contract tomorrow and need to swear in then. If I don’t get AW, can I wait to sign until a spot becomes available, or would that cause issues with the Navy?

MEPS closed before I could swear in; my rate isn’t available anyway… I want to wait but not sure how it works

93 on ASVAB, CE is my rate of choice as I plan to be an electrician and then go to Electrical Engineering to have both sides of the coin. Sounds like a good plan but wanted to run it by you all in case I’m missing something. Have there been any similar experiences with MEPS? Any advice or encouragement in my rate of choice? Soon as it’s available I’m shipping out.

Just got the call from my recruiter that I got accepted into the BDCP program for cryptological warfare officer. I’m now getting ready to take my PRT and finish the process. For those who went through this is there any tips or advice they could give me now that I’m approaching the final phase.

My experience enlisting in the Navy Reserve with prior service

While I was in the recruitment process I’d often search Google different questions I had. More often than not, I’d stumble upon a Reddit thread of someone who was in a similar situation. So I’m creating this thread to document my own experience enlisting as an 8 year OSVET for those who may find themselves going down the Google/Reddit rabbit hole. Hopefully this can give some insight for those looking for it.

I was in the Army Reserve for 8 years then got out. 7 years went by when I realized I wanted to join the military again, but this time a different branch.

I began talking with a prior service recruiter last March and went to MEPS that following April. For those who don’t know, their setup is different from the 2010s MEPS era. You’ll fill out a form requesting a MEPS physical and receive an appointment several weeks to a month later.

Once you’re there, no more stripping down to your underwear and duck walking in a line with 40 other applicants. Everything is done one-on-one with a provider and an observer of the same gender if your provider is of the opposite sex. Prior service commissioned officers, warrant officers, officer candidates, and prior service enlisted get to jump the lines in that specific order. I completed my MEPS visit in about 5 hours.

MEPS uses a medical system called MHS Genesis. If you’re unfamiliar with it, the key takeaway is that just about every encounter with a medical professional you’ve ever had is known and well-documented, and they will know if you’re lying or omitting information. Ergo, don’t lie. If you’ve had some sort of a hospital visit or a procedure done then I highly recommend being upfront about it and come with as much documentation you can.

Once you’re found medically qualified, you’ll sit down with your recruiter and/or career counselor and go over your rate and sign more paperwork. As the Navy says, choose your rate/choose your fate.

Now, I required approximately 13 tattoo waivers. They’re all visible. From my understanding, so long as your tattoos are not on your face or head and are not racist, sexist, gang-related, or offensive in any way, you should be good to go. My tattoo waivers took approximately 3 weeks to be approved by an O-9.

The portion of my enlistment I had the most questions on was the “gaining” process. In substance, it refers to the process of being officially affiliated with both the Navy and your unit or reserve center. The time frame can vary wildly, but it typically takes up to 3 months. There are other threads here that report even longer wait times. I signed my contract in May and was gained in July. Enjoy your time being in the Navy but not actually being in the Navy yet. Most importantly, don’t do anything stupid out in civilian land.

For those who are confused about how the Navy Reserve works, you’re assigned a unit where you’ll perform your rate with, and another which is where you will physically drill at (NRC). Your actual unit can be based in another state or even another country. For annual training, you’ll be sent to your actual unit. However, if you’re in a pretty active unit, they can have you travel to them for drill several times out of the year. The role of the NRC is largely administrative and ensuring you are mobilization ready. You can get medical, PRT, and supply things done there.

Now, for my actual experience at my NRC…

Dogshit. Tits on a bull may serve more of a purpose than them. There are only a handful of full-time staff and believe me when I say they are in absolutely no rush to do their jobs for you. Many of the issues I’ve faced sat on their desks for months before I took these matters into my own hands and magically solved them in a matter of minutes. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself in similar situations. You really need to take control of your Navy career and be the one to oversee it.

With all that said, 4 months elapsed from the time I made contact with a recruiter to becoming a SELRES Sailor. I did not have to go to boot camp or any OSVET program; just A and C school.

If you have any questions feel free to send me a message and I’ll do my best to help you out. If I don’t have the answer then I’ll find someone who does.

Anyone Else Waiting This Long for OCS Board Results?

Submitted my OCS packet in June and was originally told I’d likely hear back in July. It’s now September and still no results. My recruiter has been good about keeping me updated and said last week the board was still “scrubbing.”

I felt pretty good about my packet overall-solid GPA, work experience, references, etc. Has anyone else had to wait this long for OCS results? Is a 2–3+ month wait fairly common?

Tattoo waiver denial

Just thought someone in this subreddit could possibly help me understand why this out of all my tattoos got denied. Recruiter has been searching for answers but to no avail and won’t specify whether the skulls or sword need to go.

Teacher to Navy Officer

Upvotes

Hello! I’m looking to get out of education and join the Navy as an officer. Specifically as a pilot, so I’ll list some information down below because I haven’t seen much of my situation.

Degree: Music Ed
GPA: 3.78
Leadership Experience: 5 Years
Eye sight: Bad, have to get LASIK to qualify but I have always wanted LASIK anyways
Flight Hours: 0, but working with TBAS Study Pro to get some “experience”

So my big question is, am I qualified to even be considered? If not, what other career options are available if a pilot slot is not offered which is understandable.

Any assistance is welcomed!

Accompanied/Unaccompanied I.T. A/C School

Upvotes

Hello! I had a quick question for those who have been to IT A/C school. I am supposed to be going soon and right now I’m torn between getting accompanied and non-accompanied orders. If I go accompanied with my wife and child I’m afraid I’ll be to busy and wrapped up at home to study and focus on school, on the other hand I’ll be away from my family for up to a year and that is equally as challenging in its own right. Basically I’m just asking if anyone has personal experience with this and is the A school that difficult? Thanks!

BOAT School in Gulfport, MS

Upvotes

Hello, just wondering if anyone has any advice on A school for oceano/metoc officers? What is the schooling like? Is there liberty? Am I able to live off base? What is Mississippi like?

Thank you in advance, sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm not entirely sure how all of this works.

Process of Joining! Debating my rate

Post image

“Choose your rate? Pick your fate?”
Well you guys I’m 24(F) done a lot of different things in the civilian world. I’m joining, looking to grow in Discipline, Consistency, and honestly keep Learning and Growing with the resources being given. Never was afraid to get my hands dirty, or even do hard work! Great team player, Researcher at heart!

I always had an interest in HM, especially with plans of being in medical, health & wellness when getting out! Recently taking the PICat my recruiter and the head of the recruitment office mentioned of they would try and get me into a great job like Intel ! A desk job with A/c and how it’s kinda goes great with my personality 😭

First off intel was like a third option for me. Not knowing anything about it but knowing it can set me up well after my military career! (If I was smart enough) but you guys being in the A/c and at a desk all day is a recipe to put me to sleep!😭 can I not get a mixture of both? If not is it crazy that I would choose the heat then the a/c? Born and raised tropical baby here!

I’m high key an experience girly, and understand getting what you want comes with hard times but the experiences be peak! After talking to ChatGPT as I wait on my tattoo wavier to approve! They gave be other jobs my score say I can be good at like

AW
OS
PR
CTT
As well as HM

I say all this because I need people with these rates to let me know how your average day is ? And what your best and worst days look like?

Is Plastic surgery cleared in medical?

I passed meps a few months ago and waivers were accepted. I am just waiting for credentialing to be completed to know if I’ll be accepted into my role. I lost a ton of weight these past 2 years naturally and have been looking into skin removal surgery in the next month or so. I still have to do ODS and probably get another medical clearance then. But I wanted to know if people have been denied for plastic surgery even if it’s just skin removal not a bbl. Is this something I should ask my recruiter even if I’m not officially active duty yet.

Moral waiver for dismissed misdemeanors ?

Does anyone know if you require a moral waiver for non violent dismissed misdemeanors with prejudice ( no deferred dispositions). For enlisted or officer route. (Weighing my options). And will it hinder me from being able to get a rate with top secret clearance ?

Shipping out tomorrow

Hi F(19), joining as an OS

I want to be vulnerable and open, so please be as blunt and honest as you want I need it.
I’m shipping out tomorrow and I’m really nervous. I know it’s normal to feel this way, but when I talk to other people who are also shipping out tomorrow, they don’t seem nervous at all. They’re mostly excited. I’m excited too I’m looking forward to joining but I’m still scared and anxious.
Can you guys give me any tips about boot camp, or just advice in general? I just want to calm down a little because the nerves are hitting hard.
This is a completely new experience for me. I’ve always been taken care of by my family and had them handle everything. I’ve always been around them, and this will be my first time really being on my own. I want to become independent, experience the world, learn new things, and take on responsibilities. At the same time, part of me is afraid I might be making a mistake… even though I’ve always wanted to join the military.
I don’t know why all these thoughts are hitting me right now. Is this normal?

Joining the Navy at 30+

What are your thoughts on someone joining the military at 30+? I have a desire to join but I am very skeptical due to my age. I really want to serve, but I am not really sure what to expect in my 30's.

Where can you view your security clearance level? Or how can you tell if you have a secret clearance

I am a ET and I was under the impression all et’s require a secret clearance or you would be re rated. I’ve gone through boot camp. Graduated an and c school. I’ve been on my boat for a year now even finished a tdy deployment

Thing is my ETJ still says “none” for security clearance. So I’m getting kind of worried/paranoid. I have nothing to hide but I’m just worried I might lose all the progress I’ve made .

I must go oversees, but I also want to be a corpsman, what are my chances?

I want to be a hospital corps. I have the scores and I will be going to Meps in a couple of days. I would love to be in Japan, Germany or Korea in that order. I’m willing to be an electrician too. But to those that have gone to those countries, could I be a corpsman? Or what are my chances?

Wanting to go Navy with RE code 3

I shipped to army basic last April and during my time a CID case was opened because I was strangled and sexually assaulted during training. I was discharged months later with an RE code 3 no letters afterwards. Time has past, I never underwent therapy or needed meds but they Entry separated me for prior anxiety even though I proved no anxiety for years prior I didn’t ever need a waiver because I never took medication and it never flagged at MEPS. the only thing since that time was I had a baby 3 months ago. (I know I have to be 6 months postpartum and I never breastfed) but when should I start the process again? Should I reach out relatively soon to start the process? I already figured I’d have to undergo a psych evaluation because of the case and I can already pass the PRT. (I read that could be good for the process). Also how likely is it I’d find a solid recruiter who won’t bullshit and beat around the bush? Will they even send me to Meps to initiate the waiver process before 6 months PP & now with the EPTS is my MEPS physical now invalid? I’m just trying to figure out a good timeline to start everything :) thank you!

23 in a relationship of 6 years

So I've been making the decision to enlist in the Navy for about a month now the issue I'm running into is I've been in a relationship for six years and we just moved to another city about two years ago, my fiancé just started her business about two months ago and it's doing pretty well. She's always wanted to start this business up and she finally did and now I'm considering joining the Navy.

I don't wanna be inconsiderate and take her away from her dreams, but also I would like to join at a younger age rather than wait I was wondering if anybody else had been in this position not necessarily exactly my position but maybe just enlist while in a long-term relationship I was wondering how it went.

After bootcamp graduation -

Hi everyone - my partner (31M) is graduating bootcamp this September and will be going to the nuclear school in Charleston. I’m wondering what I should bring from home for him? Will he need a reliable laptop? I read underwear and a good razor on another post. What are they allowed to have over there? Thanks in advance!
