Ok I misread the news bit, Ill admit. But why cant we still have single income yet still thriving households with modern amenities? Like why is it that we have some nicer junk we cant have the same or similar livable economy? We have family with 2 people working now and they cant even come close to the financial comfort levels they once had. Sure times change but does that meant it has to be more stressful?
I want to say that in no way do I think things are fine at the moment and I'm not too optimistic for the future.
I try to be a contrarian for discussion sake and to point out that while old pictures of past generations look great, if you really think about it, we have great things today that they never had. Some of those things people would not give up today.
I guarantee this gentleman worked from a young age. I guarantee you his parents and grandparents had a harder life than he did.
He made enough to support a family because Women were not working. You would think that with Women working today, a family should have zero stress and zero problems, but we do.

Yes thats called progress, and I personally would like it to continue not become stagnant or even degress which is what feel like is currently happening. So we compare against the previous couple generations not 5 -10 generations back. The problem is not we have more to spend it on, its that our dollar just does go as far anymore.

Of course they have significantly more money. They've been earning it and investing it for over half a century. But it all ends up in the next generations hands eventually.
Wealth has been accumulating in the hands of a smaller group of people. It will be concentrated in the next generation. And on top of that, this generation won't live as long as previous generations. The worst of everything.
Maybe because the title of "typical American family" is leaving out a crucial modifier. You can't honestly discuss the suburban American family of the 1950s without talking about race. Redlining, white flight, bulldozing urban neighborhoods for freeway construction, and other forms of systemic racism ensured that the suburban ideal of the above picture was only realistic for white families (and even then only some white families).
