I think “M M candies” are marshmallows. It’s insane to call marshmallows candies but I’ve seen old recipes where marshmallows are counted out like “36” instead of 1cup or whatever. Here’s something similar https://texascooking.com/recipes/grapefruitpie.htm

Marshmallows are absolutely a candy. We’ve just become accustomed to “candy” being skittles/haribo/chocolate, etc.
There’s so many old school candies that still qualify, you just don’t see them in the candy aisle.

I love oranges, and I love chocolate, but I hate the combination.

Yes exactly! Dream whip is this kind of old-fashioned powder that comes in a packet. You whip it with milk to make cool whip, basically. I’m assuming it predates cool whip, because it’s been around forever. Some recipes also call for just the powder added into the ingredients, because it added texture and thickness.
I only know this because my grandmother and mother taught me to bake, and had some old fashioned cook books that called for dream whip, so I used it once or twice. As I recall it tastes really good! I might have to try it again one of these days. 😁

I think you're right - I'm contemplating making this and since it calls for the grapfruit to be drained, surely it must be out of a can?
I don't think I've ever seen it canned. I'm wondering also about the Dream whip- do I make it per the instructions, or just use the powder

I would think yes, because it says to put whipped cream on the top, and since that isn't listed as one of the ingredients I assume it comes from the Dream Whip. Still, both excellent questions.

My Costco sells grapefruit cups in the fridge section. They used to be near the butter for me but last month they moved them with the POM juice. In Canada it’s $19.99 for a box of 12. Maybe the grocery store sells them with the fruit cocktail?

I thought this was one of those joke recipes. Claim you are making a healthy dessert with grapefruit. Follow directions to make a chocolate pie with M&Ms and at the end serve the pie to yourself and give the grapefruit to your husband. Or throw away the grapefruit.

GRAPEFRUIT PIE
36 M. M. candies
4 tsp. boiling water
Melt and cool — 2 c. grapefruit drained
¼ c. grapefruit juice
Fold in melted M. M. — 1 pkg. dream whip
Crust:
14 chocolate Oreo cookies crushed
2 Tbsp melted butter—add above filling top with whip cream and Oreo crumbs. About 1 9" pie, double for 9×13" pan.

After a little research, I agree with the marshmallows instead of M&Ms candies. But I believe that the Dream Whip mix was meant to be prepared as “whipped cream” before adding to the mix of grapefruit and melted marshmallows. Then some of the Dream Whip was to be set aside to decorate the top with a sprinkling of Oreo crumbs.

It’s not M&M’s…it’s m.m., which means mini marshmallows. They referred to them as candies back then. This is actually a pretty tasty icebox pie. My mom would do this with all sorts of fruit but my favorite was cherries!
