Hello! This is a long shot and I realize that but I’m going to take a leap of faith and hope that at least one person knows what I am talking about.

I’m looking for a photo I saw back in college. This would’ve been somewhere from 2016-2018. I was in a photojournalism program at the time, and I saw a photo that has stuck with me ever since then. I’d really love to be able to find it if anyone knows what I’m talking about.

My professor was showing us a judging of some kind. I think maybe they were picking finalists. We were watching on something similar to a livestream where they would display a photo and the judges would declare it either in or out. (We were just seeing the photo and hearing voices.)

The photo itself was a black and white image that I believe was taken in an abandoned church or similar building. There was a needle stuck into a pew, and the angle the photo was taken at made it look like a cross. The second it came up, my entire class gasped, and then the judge declared it out. It left the screen, and I never saw it again, but I’ve thought about it so many times over the years.

I asked my old professor. His best suggestion was to check out the Best of Photojournalism archives from that year, or dig into College Photographer of the Year archives, but I’d really love to know if this picture sounds familiar to anybody. I wish I knew what contest they were judging, but I believe in the power of the internet! Thanks in advance :)

I was asked by a friend to be the race photographer for a new bike race. My question is if anyone has done events like this and what sites they put their photos on so race participants can download them. I have don’t bike races where the organizer partners with a photographer who then puts the photos on a site where people can buy/download them. Just looking for recommendations?

I'm thinking about getting an FAA Part 107 drone license and renting drones (probably via Share Grid) both to learn how to use one and if I ever need one.

• Any advice on how to prepare for the test?
• What drones would be good enough for photojournalism at top-tier publications like national magazines and newspapers?

The FAA's website (Become a Certificated Remote Pilot) and their online training course makes the process look pretty straightforward. Should I prepare for the test with other materials?

At the risk of sounding facetious, I think photojournalism is my calling and I guess my question is just…can one make it in this career anymore?

I’m nearing 40 and wanting to pivot careers. I’m an artist, traveler, writer, and educator. All of these have given me a set of skills that I think would be a solid foundation for this kind of work. I don’t plan to have a family and prefer to move around a lot rather than settle down in one place so I see the travel as a natural fit in my life.

I’ve considered adjacent paths in academic research and art, but always come back to photojournalism.

Any success stories from people who started out in the last handful of years?

I used the list to get new names, see who is the hot photographer plus keep some standards for the names I’m looking at. I’ve been in a lull and I need something like this again.
I use at-edge to get some names, but I’m hoping someone maintains a list I can use.
I found aphotoeditor but they only maintain lists of agents and photo consultants.

Has anyone taken the digital photography course at Truman? It’s a pretty lengthy course like 6 hours I believe. I just wanna know if it’s worth it. Let me know!

Hi,

I'm interested in pursuing a documentary photography course in the UK. I'm based in Manchester, so ideally not having to travel more than an hour to study. I'm willing to do a 1 year course if it's really worth it, or a lot shorter if that's equally as valuable.

I don't want a course teaching me photography since I already have this skill.

I found an online course through UAL. It's called 'Documentary Photography Online Short Course'. It sounds very interesting but I want to do a course which is thorough and will genuinely really help me learn the skill of documentary photography etc. However, if anyone thinks this course is worth it, please let me know!

So gang, I was at a festival recently as freelance press, I came across a gent who was there on assignment for Getty images which I thought was cool as!

I've been looking now for a while at listing some of my archive onto some of these sites, that being my live music, festivals and some travel photography (from trips across Europe and Japan)

I'd like to know if anyone has experience working with these kinds of companies within their live music teams, is the effort worth the money earned form each assignment?
Would I actually make much potentially from my archive images uploaded?

Anything over £100 over a whole year is a win in my books, or is it a waste of time?

I’m a freelance photojournalist, so I need to track mileage for reimbursements and taxes. I wasn’t happy with the existing options which require subscriptions, upload tracking data to the cloud, and feel clunky and non-native.

Over the past few months, I’ve been building an alternative for myself. It’s free, fast, and—most importantly—keeps nearly all tracking data encrypted on your phone (the parking marker has to be in less secure storage so that it can wake the phone to start tracking).

Other photographers might find it useful too, so feel free to use it and send me any feedback.

I've begun work on a photo documentary about a local animal shelter, that I want to put together in book format. I'm currently looking at Affinity Publisher, but I'm curious to learn what others are using. TIA

I just finished Gregory Halpern’s online course at Magnum Learn ($99). It’s so good. I got more out of it than a lot of workshops. He edits and sequences with contact sheets from a Pentax 67. Next I may check out the course from Jonas Bendiksen.

I took a workshop with Bendiksen and he uses Lightroom's Collections feature to edit and sequence. I sort of learned how to do that on my own, but not at the power user level like Bendicksen. I hear he shows you how to do that in the online course. But I'm more interested in Matt Black's work, he has a class, too.

Anyone else take the classes? Thoughts?

This is a pretty common newspaper gig these days. It's what's known as the Reader's Choice, and while it's not that difficult to shoot, it's a huge organizational pain in the butt. Doing some research for a play but all I’m able to fine are photos of gitmo prisoners wearing orange beanies and the blacked out goggles, etc. Then I can find images of protestors wearing the black hoods. I’m thinking of the famous images around 2002 and following.

Working on some costume design choices and while the hood would work I think even if it’s only been protestors, I would like the be historically accurate if possible.

For me the image of a prisoner wearing a black hood is iconic (in my mind). Have I just made it up that that actually exists and have just been influenced by the images of protestors? Or were gitmo prisoners actually transported in black hoods?

What’s the best ‘camera’ bag for run and gun shooting. Preferably not a backpack

I photograph a lot of the protests/demos/events in London, currently I am using a Uniqlo Sling bag to carry my A7riii + Lens and/or Lenses, 13” MacBook, small flash among other bits.

Due to the nature of these fast paced events happening on the streets, I don’t necessarily want to have a backpack. I want to remain fairly nimble and not feel like a turtle..

I’m either thinking of getting that Newswear chest vest or the Thinktank belt system.. any other recommendations are entirely welcome!

I am a photographer entering my junior year of high school next month. I have shot close to 100 games between different sports and leagues, all without issue besides one high school; i was told (by a very nice man, if somehow you're reading this i'm not dissing you!) that to get sideline access, i needed to be with a local news station because of \[something insurance related\]. I understood and shot thru the chain link fence for the remainder of that school's games, but with the next season coming soon, i'd like to be on the sidelines and get the shots that i know i could.

However, i'm completely lost as to how to even begin. Does anyone have any advice? Anything is greatly appreciated!

I did a quick look see here for answers to this question and found some that were a few years old so I thought I’d ask for more current replies from everyone: What is the best amount to charge for shooting a high school football game and providing around 1/2 dozen images at a small rural daily newspaper? The turn around time is by 10PM the night of the games. I am an experienced shooter, not a novice. I am a terrible business person though and really don’t like this end of the biz. So honest advice and insights are all welcome.

For those with professional experience in photojournalism, documentary photography, or freelance publication:

A few weeks ago, I got into contact with an archeology professor leading a dig in Italy. I dropped everything and paid out of pocket to fly over and stay for a week, documenting the process. The team consists of several professors, phd students, and undergrads from various universities around US and Italy. I walked away with a few thousand photos and an interview with the lead prof.

I made my intentions clear from the beginning: I want to create a photo essay with an accompanying article to publish somewhere that might want it (no idea where yet), and provide the team with a bunch of photos that they can use in their educational/outreach materials. I believe I have enough content for an engaging narrative.

This was my first semi-professional shoot (I wasn’t paid), and I have absolutely no experience or contacts in the publishing industry.

My questions:
- Should I save the 10 photos I want published for myself and only give the team the second-best? Or would it boost attention if I gave them the good stuff and they spread it around? Should I only send them the photos after I get published?

- Everyone was ok with my taking photos of them and their work, although I didn’t explicitly get verbal confirmation from each and every one. It was more like, ok cool there’s a photographer, don’t really care. I have written confirmation from the lead. Is this enough consent to publish their faces?

- My idea for publication is start high and work downwards as I get rejected. So send it to NG, NYT, and as I inevitably get no response, go more and more local. Is this a good idea? Do publications typically have a public email to send pitches to or do I need to know someone?

- Should I complete the project first then pitch to publications? Do I just send them the completed article or just a summary?
