Wanted Changes For Smash 6?

I’m not even mad about how light 107 weight feels for a character his size anymore. I just want the blind spots on Ridley’s Up Tilt and Up Smash removed or be more reasonable (for example, the hitbox of his Up Tilt should include his ENTIRE WING and not just the tiny spike tips).

Also, give Ridley an extra jump. He deserves it along with some buffed aerial physics/mobility. There’s no good reason that Donkey Kong, a gorilla who can’t fly and has to propel himself through the air by spinning his arms can carry me into the blastzone with six consecutive Bairs and has a better air game.

Last but not least, replace his current Dair with the pogo stick tail stab he actually uses in the games. Anything better than this impractical, shitty stall-and-fall.

What’s y’all’s experience with Amiibos?

Been thinking about getting a Ridley one and training it but I don’t really know how they work except for the fact it learns your playstyle

Turns out Ridley side B is the biggest part of how you get around Samus bombs in neutral

So if you see Samus lay a bomb and wait to see if they do a 2nd bomb (don’t do this if they only lay one bomb), then you can go for a shorthop delayed side B and with the right spacing and timing you can avoid both bombs and win the interaction.

You can also apply this to when your opponent attempts to do a shorthop aerial bomb drop to try and cover possible attempts to shorthop over. You just have to realize what it is they're doing and punish the 2nd bomb with the right timing.

I can’t post a clip of it here too in one post, but would like to point out that this also works if they fire a missile beforehand and you do an immediate shorthop side B which allows you to go over the Super Missile (this also works for dodging baby charge shots).

Wish this had been known years ago, but better late than never. It was a fellow Ridley named Sapphire that had been using training mod to lab out specific neural interactions and counterplay to out of shield options to make up for Ridley's lower end shield pressure and inconsistent shield safety, fixing the main part of Ridley's consistency problems; at least in neutral.

Guys my friend is now a joker main

Me and my friend group aren’t the best at smash but relatively he’s a bit better. What do I do in this matchup or am I just cooked generally??

Ive got a very, very simple thing.

Very simple thing id like to see change next game. Down Special should work differently in the air. No perfect striking mechanic BUT it goes straight downward, is much faster, and you can pogo bounce with well timed inputs. Reason? Simple. https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxNwSZFQjuv3-sKeq4aR5m-yneAPiW-ibb?si=F4FMmZ8xkQ-HB5qt

Who do you think is a good secondary for Ridley?

Basically the title🤷 I‘m not in desperate need of a secondary or smth but it just seems nice to have one in the back ya know, also preferably not DLC cuz I don’t rly wanna pay, and I think they’re kinda lame sometimes.

Upward item toss > up throw > up air is powerful

This also works against Toon Link with his bomb in hand at 70%, Diddy Kong with banana peel in hand at 70%, Peach with Mr Saturn in hand at 70%, Pac-Man around 80% when you have the bell in hand, ROB a bit past 80% with gyro in hand, Belmont a bit 80% when you have the flask in hand, and adult Link with remote bomb in hand around 85%.

That said, Pac-Man’s bell, Belmont’s flask, and Link’s remote bomb don’t provide quite enough hitstun to make it true, but still a powerful setup.

For other examples not mentioned like crown against K Rool, mechakoopa against Bowser Jr, or turnip against Peach, upward item toss > up throw tends to knock them more to the side and leaving you with no opportunity for an immediate uair unfortunately, but you can do it on them as a mixup and try to punish what they do after I guess.

And the timing with Snake's grenades and Banjo's grenade eggs were too strict to tell whether this setup works on them or not. Probably not practical as far as those.

Ridley footstool applications- Mostly footstool dair, but there’s some footstool nair in the mix too

To start off, I became a late bloomer to doing the footstool stuff out of shield properly even though I had some other notes on it for awhile; learning that you didn’t have to do the double shield cancel inputs first certainly helped.

In any case, this is what people mean when they say footstool dair being the future of Ultimate Ridley. That Pit forward air is unpunishable by Ridley acting out of shield otherwise, but now he has something to fight back with against those safe multi-hit aerials.

When the opponent does a safe aerial on shield (at least -8), let go of your shield button & shorthop like you normally would in the direction of opponent, and time a 2nd jump when directly over them. If they do a crossup or land directly on top of your shield, the direction held doesn't matter, as you'll transition from jumpsquat directly to footstool. Also important to pay attention to distance of opponent when going for a footstool, as you'll often want to delay footstool by a few frames to get more distance out of jump before actually performing the footstool.

Footstool dair is good after shielding moves like Bayo up tilt or fair 3, Bowser fair, Byleth nair, Falco nair or fair, Lucas nair, Meta Knight fair or bair, Mewtwo nair or fair, Mii Swordfighter fair, G&W nair (shield tilting required), Ness dash attack or fair, Pac-Man dash attack or dair, Palutena nair, Peach dair, Pichu nair or fair, Pikachu nair or fair, Pit fair, Sora nair 3, and Zelda nair.

Our airspeed & acceleration still probably won't allow us to punish well spaced options, but normally safe on shield aerials with low end lag we can kinda punish now. Of course, we can make it easier with dash shielding to make them mis-space. There's also the theory of using footstool dair below plats to force tech chase situations and get an up smash.

Some examples in action- https://x.com/5atez/status/1941935177690952023?s=46&t=NvvvokY_NM2udMgu8BGKVQ

——

Another way of practicing without a training mod pack, is go to training, pick Min-Min as opponent, set CPU behavior to side smash, dodge the attack & hit her before the arms retract (u-throw being best with Ridley here), and she'll do a nair out of hitstun, allowing you to practice footstools out of shield and parries more consistently against said nair which is normally too safe on shield for us. To time it best, can wait till just before she's about to nair while landing to start shielding, and do the following inputs after she's landed.

While you can also practice shorthopping out of double shield to avoid her set f-smash and then footstool her, you won't see a footstool animation for it since she'll be charging f-smash again, but you'll see yourself bounce off her as you normally would when you footstool, so can dair her after.

——

As for footstool nair, the following are the characters we can do it on-

Yoshi, Pikachu, Luigi, Bowser, both Icies, Dr Mario (Only when facing away from you), Pichu, Falco, Young Link (only when facing away from you), Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Wario, Ike, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Sonic, Toon Link, Mega-Man, Little Mac, Greninja, Palutena, Shulk, Bowser Jr, Duck Hunt, Ryu, Ken, Inkling, Ridley, King K Rool, Isabelle (Only when facing away from you), Piranha Plant, Steve, Mii Brawler.

Even for those you can FS nair, FS dair can be easier at first; can space it for a sour dair to get effective knockback, since sweetspot dair is only good for spiking off stage, though if they're at stupidly high %, can sweetspot dair and then go for a uair kill after. Regardless, wait till they're at least at mid % for footstooling in general. With FS nair, have to be ready to press A during the 2nd jump input for the footstool, or you'll be too late and just get a regular footstool.

For those that Rid can FS nair, quickly press A after the FS before drifting too far. For FS dair, don't delay C-stick down; do an immediate input after jumping on top of them (in my case either way it's R+X+forward, X > A or C-down). If you FS nair, hold back or forward to send them a certain direction which varies by MU. This may be better with plats so they'll be forced to tech rather than jump or A-land, but bair can catch those.

An example against Palu- https://x.com/sapphirestorm99/status/1720247188834419073?s=46&t=NvvvokY_NM2udMgu8BGKVQ

Example against Mewtwo- https://x.com/sapphirestorm99/status/1802364313178357837?s=46&t=NvvvokY_NM2udMgu8BGKVQ

How do I deal with banana?

Started going to a local and there was a Diddy that absolutely whooped my ass. Him using banana would just follow to an up smash that would kill me a lot. Any suggestions?

Wasn’t able to attach a couple of my other ones here, only being able to attach one at a time, but for other notable Rid gyro stuff elsewhere:

0 to death with gyro uair ladders on triplats/Battlefield- https://x.com/himo_pechio/status/1469330311150727171

Not all of those I could necessarily be bothered to master, but getting a basic feel for doing them was usually enough if nothing else.

With ROB being most commonly seen as our worst matchup, only made sense to eventually double down on using his spin toy against him after you’ve gained enough understanding on every other aspect of the MU. Enjoy, chin up and stay strong.

Information I find upsetting

Ridley is lighter than piranha plant…a freaking PLANT is heavier than a SPACE DRAGON…I don’t understand smash logic anymore. Of and Samus is heavier than him which makes ZERO sense.

What Do Y’all Think Is Old Ridley’s Worst And Best Matchup Is?

For his worst I’d say is characters like Toon Link or even Samus (ironically), mainly cause of projectiles being a thing Ridley has a hard time avoiding.

Idk about best matchup(s), but characters I’d say he has a good advantage against are most of the heavy weights and characters with bad recoveries. Ridley THRIVES offstage cause of his great airials and edge guarding, plus characters with large hit boxes Ridley has an easier time hitting with his disjointed moves.

These are my experiences, what do my fellow Ridley’s think?

Tips for the Game and Watch matchup?

Seems like a rough fight. The constant projectiles for edgeguarding make it really hard to get at least back into neutral (big body = ez target). Tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
