Proper drainage is one of the easiest ways to protect a home, yet neglected gutters are a top cause of expensive, preventable damage—ranging from rotted fascia boards to cracked foundations.

Here is a straightforward guide to keeping your gutter system functioning properly year-round.

1. Recommended Maintenance Schedule

• Standard Property: Clean gutters twice a year—once in late spring (after seed pods, pollen, and tree blossoms fall) and once in late fall (after leaves drop).
• Heavy Tree Coverage: Clean 3 to 4 times a year if surrounded by oaks, maples, or pine trees. Pine needles are particularly troublesome because they weave together and quickly clog downspouts.
• Freeze Preparation: Ensure gutters are fully clear before the first hard freeze. Trapped water expands as it freezes, pulling gutters away from the fascia and causing ice dams.

2. Common Warning Signs of Gutter Failure

You don't have to wait for a heavy rainstorm to spot an issue:

• Peeling Paint or Wood Rot: Water is spilling over the back edge of the gutter instead of flowing toward the downspout.
• Dirt Streaks on Siding or on Gutter: Vertical overflow lines indicate the trough is backing up during heavy rain.
• Soil Erosion Around the Foundation: Trenches or washed-away mulch directly under gutter runs mean the water isn't draining correctly. In some cases, the water might not even be going into the gutters.
• Water Pooling Near the Foundation: Downspouts should discharge water at least 4 to 6 feet away from the home depending on the grading around your home.

3. Three Mistakes to Avoid

• Ignoring the Downspouts: Cleaning the main trough is only half the job. If the elbow downspout is clogged, the system will overflow instantly. Always flush downspouts with a hose after clearing the main runs. You might have to disassemble the downspout in very tough clogs.
• Discharging Too Close to the Foundation: Short downspouts allow water to pool around foundation walls, leading to basement seepage and settling. Use downspout extenders or underground piping to push water away.
• Expecting Gutter Guards to be Maintenance-Free: No guard system is entirely self-cleaning. Shingle grit, fine pine needles, and pollen still build up over time. Guards reduce cleaning frequency, but annual inspections are still necessary. Don't let a company tell you that you will never have to clean your gutters again IF you purchase the gutter guards, unfortunately its just not true,

Ladder Safety Tip

Always make sure the feet of the ladder are secure and level. Never rest an extension ladder directly against the gutter. The pressure can crush the metal and snap internal hangers. Also, the ladder can slide on the smooth gutter. Use a ladder stabilizer/standoff to lean against the roofline or exterior wall instead. It is much safer and less likely to slide or move.

Retiree starting new job near Scotia doesn't know area at all. Rather than rush into the wrong place or wrong neighborhood I don't mind buying some time renting a room or a small furnished studio apartment or decent weekly efficiency from September 1st to October 31st. I have been noticing a ridiculous amount of flock cameras appearing in scotia, with one ridiculously in Collins park. Now I love being spied on by police and shady corporations as much as the next guy, but does anyone know if these were brought up as a discussion point at any recent town boards or any such meeting?
