No-Buy September Starts Today!
A few of us had commented on another post that we were interested in doing a No-Buy September so I thought I'd make a separate post about it if that's okay to help with accountability and support!
For me, my main issue (like many of us here) is shopping for clothes. I have WAY more clothing than I need, yet I've bought dozens of items on Poshmark and Depop over the past few months. Way way more than any one person could need! It's truly embarrassing watching the mailman pull up and just dump a pile of packages on my stoop... And I'm embarrassed to admit that I have a lot of credit card debt, not exclusively from shopping but obviously shopping is a big issue when I already had debt. So other than buying food and household essentials, I'm going to make it a No-Buy month!
I wanted to share a few rules and guidelines I've set for myself, if anyone is interested:
- No buying clothes or items for myself, at all. I want to use what I have and shop my own closet.
- No going to thrift stores - I can ALWAYS find something to buy at a thrift store, and then justify it because it's cheap, and because that's my one chance to buy it since I might not be able to find the same item again. Same with Poshmark, Depop, etc. since they're basically online thrift stores and they tend to be my downfall.
- I'm also going to sort through my old clothes and find some items I want to sell or donate. I am NOT going to actually sell them online this month since unfortunately Depop and Poshmark are too hard for me, I think if I have it on my phone to sell stuff it'll be too tempting to also "just browse" and then put myself at risk of shopping. I think I'll just put them aside and then if I still want to get rid of them come October, I'll either post them myself or ask my fiance to post them for me.
- The one shopping exception I'm making is that two of my immediate family members have birthdays this month, so I will be buying them each a gift. However I already know what I'm getting them and where (I actually tried to buy them last week but the store was closed lol) so that should be pretty easy.
- Kind of a weird one, but I want to spend less on groceries and food. It's not like I spend a ton on food and we don't eat out or order food that much, but right now our pantry is super well stocked with beans, rice, canned goods, etc. plus a decent amount of food in the freezer. I'm going to focus on buying fresh veggies and dairy items to use with the pantry items we already have, and use up some of the stuff that's been sitting around.
I think my biggest issue is just going to be resisting temptation to buy more clothing. Like for example, I have a bikini bottom and the matching top is no longer available in the online store, so I've been looking to find the top on Depop/Poshmark. To be honest it feels very very uncomfortable to me to have just "half the set," but the logical part of me knows that I have a ton of swimsuits and I do not need that top! Especially not right now. I keep thinking "what if I JUST look for that top and only buy that?" but I know that's what I think for every item I buy.
So there it is! Hope everyone has a successful No-Buy September. Feel free to share any ideas, rules of your own, etc. as well!
