MOD POST/MEGATHREAD: Canvas down due to ransomware/cybersecurity incident

UPDATE: Instructure has paid the ransom, and has received assurances and proof the data has been deleted off the dark web. THIS DOES NOT MEAN ShinyHunters has actually done it, they could be faking it. Please continue to do your due diligence.

It should be safe to login to Canvas now, but please do your due diligence.

Context: ShinyHunters has knocked Canvas offline, 3.65 TB of data from over 275 million records and over 8,800 institutions were stolen, and threatened to be posted on the dark web on May 12th, if companies do not pay. Of course, right near finals.

Data affected: Full Names, Student IDs, Email addresses, and private messages between students and instructors.

There is no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved.

As a result of this, you may be getting targeted extortion emails/phishing emails. Best practices for right now:

Change your Canvas/mySierra password, and stay alert for scams, now that your personal and student emails may be breached.

Is Sierra College a good option?

Hello, im from out of state and I've been looking for community colleges in California with dorms! I'm really interested in the TAG program that California CCs offer and the benefits of transferring from an in-state CC. Is Sierra college worth it overall? Are the dorms good? Any opinions you have on the school negative or positive would really help!! Thank you <3

Is there any place I can go to meet people from Sierra who are also going to Sac Anime this weekend?

Kind of last minute, but I’m just looking to see if I can see familiar faces at Sac Anime! I’m new to norcal and going alone is a little scary for me. I’m not asking for rides or to join groups, I just want to possibly pop into any clubs with people who are going to Sac Anime, thanks!

Waiting on Backorder Material for PHIL-0004

At this point of writing, I haven’t yet checked my student email today, but I have been keeping tabs on the required material for one of my courses for the semester, Intro to Critical Thinking, with Elena Lopez. The activation code for our courses’ ebook text has been on backorder since the start of Fall 2026, and I’m wondering if anyone else is still waiting for it too.

Financial Aid worries

Is anyone else kind of worried about their status with Financial Aid this year? I had gone and made an appeal for mine so I can complete my AA-T requirements within the next year. And so far, I haven’t received much word about it. Given how FAFSA is going for a lot of people right now, I am kind of concerned about getting dropped from my courses and such this semester.

Student Loan

Is it normal for financial aid to call and verify your references? I've had loans from other colleges and this has never happened before. Just wondering if one of my references doesn't answer, will they withhold my loan?

Three-Dimensional Design Course for Fall 2026

So, I have at least one course that's in person for this coming semester, being 3D-Design, and I'm wondering how the experience has been for others who've taken it last semester or so. It has been a while since I've attended Sierra, and I'm sure the culture has changed quite a bit since 2023 for me. What would you say the course is like nowadays; Has it gotten better, worse, or just kept the same? Also, anyone else happen to be taking 3D-Designs this Fall? I'm taking the afternoon classroom for Monday and Wednesday and would appreciate making some new colleagues this semester too.

Fall 2026 class Canvas

Hello all, i’m taking a Bio class online with an in person lab this fall semester. On canvas it shows that I am enrolled, but I can’t access anything in regard to the class nor do i have an email from the professor. I’m returning to Sierra after many years away from college, so maybe this is how it is normally and will be able to access the course next week once the semester starts. I was wondering if this is normal though that I can’t find more details for the class. Would like to get a head start if i can or just don’t to miss any important details for day 1. Would appreciate any insight.

difference between hybrid classes and in person classes?

My question here is that I am enrolled for a hybrid class that meets every Friday, but what confuses me is why its labeled hybrid. My thought process here is doesn’t every class have a canvas and online work? Or does hybrid mean that you meet in a zoom also once a week. Because there isn’t really anything that states we are supposed to do online meetings, and if that is the case that could really mess up my schedule.

Are there any good physics professors?

I took Kinghorn in the summer and failed, I really disliked how he arranged the class and genuinely felt he made the course much harder than other professor. Regardless of this I am seeking for a good professor to retake physics 205 with?

Any older students (30+) here?

Who else here is a student and 30-40ish years old, or older? I feel ancient thinking about how young most students probably are. 😅

Have you attended college before, or is this your first time?

What's your major?

Are you doing only distance courses, hybrid, or classroom?

Does anybody want to be study buddies, or just vent/comisserate, or help one another navigate balancing things like full-time work and/or parenting while attending school?

I'm a Psych major, and a transfer from an out-of-state University. I've lived in the Sacramento area since 2012, so I'm not new to the area, just to going to school here. I attended said University right out of high school and completed almost half of a 4-year-degree, but never finished for a multitude of reasons. I'm only doing distance learning at the moment.

Free dishes + other items for any student moving into dorms

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey :) I know getting dishes from a stranger might be a little odd lol but I’m not using them. There’s two plates, two bowls, and a dinner plate (plate + bowl hybrid type thing). I know what it’s like to move into a dorm and have things you’ll need and didn’t think about or aren’t able to afford, so I wanted to offer these up to anyone who’s moving in for the fall! I definitely realized quick how much stuff I was missing when I moved into dorms for the first time. I also have an extra rug I’m not using as well as a trash can + mop and a lamp. Just dm me if you’re interested in any of these, I’ll just end up donating them if nobody claims. <3

Registration for STEM classes

Hey guys I'm gonna be doing a year at Sierra here and I was wondering how fast the chem 3a, 3b and phys 205, 210 and calc classes fill up? I heard the chemistry gets full in seconds. Is it faster to register if I use multiple devices at once at registration time?

Phys 205 waitlist

i'm currently number 6 on the waitlist for physics 205 with Aviva Shackell for fall 2026. I took the class last spring as well, but i wasn't able to pass due to a bunch of reasons (though i passed the lab, so i'm not waiting on that, just the lecture class)

I was number nine a few weeks ago, and the list has been moving up, but i've been stuck at number 6 for a while, and it's getting concerning.

the term starts around august 19th i believe, what are the chances i will be able to make it into the class this semester? I've already technically transferred to sacramento state, but I'm retaking the class here part time because I would have to repeat the lab there, and also the classes are full.
Any ideas on what i could do? I currently plan on showing up on the first day anyway just in case, and maybe emailing Aviva since i had the class with her last time as well.

ALSO THIS IS A PSA IF YOURE IN THE CLASS AND DONT INTEND TO TAKE IT OR KNOW ANYONE ELSE WHO IS PLEASE DROP THE CLASS fr im going through it this year 😔🙏🏼

Bad professors

Hey, I’m dealing with a situation with a terrible professor who constantly rejects my work with little to zero to little guidance and leadership has been horribly rude to me and already told me I’m just gonna fail this summer course. I have a meeting with the Dean and the division next week about it, but where can I try to message other students in my class and see if they’re dealing with a similar experience with her because I can’t find anything on canvas. Thanks.
