Showcase New DLL addon: Region Sync!

Hello there!

I have just created a new addon for SC4, and wanted to share!

It is the Region Sync, which is a macro that goes over each city tile, runs it for a while, goes to next, rinse and repeat until done.

..but why?

Many times when I play SC4, I have multiple large tiles built, but switching between them was a pain, especially when I considered one "done", but still needed to equalise it's neighbours.
RCI can wildly fluctuate, demands chrash, traffic jumps, as a city catches up to 200 years of progress on the other tile.

Ever since I played SC2013, the interconnectedness of cities in it was such a delight, the SC4 region just got more painful when I returned. I checked and no addons existed that could affect it.
However, it all changed when DLL's were possible to use...

...what?

How it works, is that this is effectively a macro that uses internal commands that the engine already knows.
Use it in the region, it goes over each city tile, lets it run, saves and exits, then rinse and repeat.

For example, the default is to have each city run for 12 months, and go over every city 2 times, which allows them to equalise both ways.
Even better, you can adjust the values too!

..but how?

So, the details are mentioned on the Simtropolis page, but in a nutshell:

  1. By using this, you can enter the "syncregion"cheat, where the addon will check your region.
  2. It automatically goes over each city tile, one by one, sets it to cheetah speed, and let it run for a specified time.
  3. Once the amount of months is hit, it saves, exits to region and then continues onto the next city tile, until it is finished!

For me it's great, as it saves time and effort since I do not need to be there at all and just let it run while I get some water.

Now, I am an amateur at this and this is my first addon for this game. I can only test so much, but it was stable on my attempts to break it.
I know this can be either "so useful!", or "...why would you ever need this?", so wondering if anyone else sees a good use-case for it, or it was just me. :D

As usual, I am open to feedback or even mention how it works, if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

Questions & Help Do you recommend any mods?

Hi! I'm going to play this game for the first time since the mid 2000's. At age 10 I never manage to get any city running. Now, 20 years later I learned how to play SimCity 3000 and I'm ready to move to this game.

I want to know if there are any mods that have QoL improvements or make the game compatible with newer hardware and software, just for casual playthrough.

I have the Steam version of the game.

Questions & Help Sim city 4 NAM and 4gb patch installed, still not working

Hey everyone, I am losing my mind a bit here and hoping someone might know what I am missing. My game keeps crashing to desktop every time I try to use road puzzle pieces in NAM.

I have spent the last few hours setting up all the standard fixes and patches, but the crashes are still happening.

- I have the 4GB Patch to SimCity 4.exe
- Installed SC4Fix.dll into my User Documents Plugins folder to stop hover crashes
- Installed SC4CPUOptions.dll,
- SC4GraphicsOptions.dll, and SC4AutoSave.dll in Documents Plugins
- Installed gzcom2.dll into the Steam Apps folder next to the main exe
- Installed dgVoodoo2 files (D3D8.dll, D3D9.dll, D3DImm.dll, DDraw.dll, and dgVoodooCpl.exe) into the Apps folder
- Configured dgVoodoo2 VRAM to 1024MB on the DirectX tab

If anyone has any advice id love to hear!

PS THis will probably get flagged as well

Questions & Help Two browser tools for SC4 terrain — real map → PNG → region ZIP (WIP, fan-made)

How I “played” SC4 for 30 minutes and then wrote software instead.

After a long working week I got nostalgic and fired up SC4 again. Played for about 30 minutes, then decided I wanted to rebuild my hometown — tried terrain in-game, struggled, went down the rabbit hole of guides and old mapper tools.

And of course, instead of actually playing, I automated it.

I built two small browser apps (no install):

  1. SC4RWT — pick a real place on a map, export a 16-bit grayscale heightmap PNG• Fixed orange scope in the center — pan the map to aim• Region sizes 1×1 / 2×2 / 4×4 / 8×8 large cities (1 cell = 16 m)• Auto water/height from elevation (WIP — not perfect every time) or manual sliders• Map themes, shareable URL, runs in browser
  2. SC4Mapper (web) — drop that PNG → auto city grid → download region ZIP• Port of the SC4Mapper pipeline (2013/2026 lineage)• Paint terrain, stamp, place cities, undo/redo, draft autosave• 16-bit PNG only for now

Pipeline: generate PNG in the first tool → import in the second → unzip to Documents/SimCity 4/Regions/

Both are early/WIP — expect bugs. Unofficial fan tools, not affiliated with EA/Maxis.

Original post on simtropolis, see all links there: https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/764442-real-world-map-%E2%86%92-sc4-heightmap-%E2%86%92-region-zip-%E2%80%94-two-browser-tools-early-wip/

Feedback welcome — what would make these actually useful for your workflow?

Update 01 Sep 2026 : SC4M is supported now.

You can drop a .sc4m the same way as a PNG, and there is a Download SC4M button next to the ZIP.
If you have an SC4M, please try it and tell me how it goes.

Questions & Help Help needed: why did I only get a "sample parking lot" with this cc?

So, I only got something that looks like the above picture, sans cars. I can't do anything with tab on it and I can't really figure out why all the textures/parking lots didn't get included? And yes, I have SHK Super parking pack. All in the plugin folder with all the other cc.

Please be kind, I'm new to cc/mods 🥹 It just took me 23 years 😄

This is an updated regional view as of August 28, 2026. I really aimed to make this region as dense as possible, especially with the transit, and I feel that I succeeded.

Main Mods Used:

  • NAM
  • Cori's no low wealth kickout
  • Black Hole Utilities
  • Pollution Reducer(s)
  • Simoleon RH
  • Various lots

While it’s been heading this way for awhile now, it looks like reddit is finally making it insanely difficult, and I suspect, eventually impossible, for Australians like myself to access their accounts and the site itself without verifying their age by validating a government issued ID. This is something I, like many others, refuse to give corporations on ethical and privacy grounds. As such, unless there is a change in reddit policies and procedures I’m probably leaving for good.

While I’m going to miss a lot of communities I frequented, the SimCity 4 subreddit was, without a doubt, my favourite. While we’re not the most active community, it was always fun seeing what people were doing with a game now over 20 years old, and it was one I very much enjoyed participating in.

In terms of alternatives, I’ll be on the Simtropolis forums and discord. I’m also around on the SCEvermore discord as well.

Further, I’ll also be posting (hopefully) daily to the SimCity 4 page on Lemmy, which is a sort of reddit alternative. I’ll be very upfront and say that there is not in anyway an active community there currently. At the moment there are only 3 posts, 2 of which are mine from the past two days. I’ll likely be screaming into the void for awhile but if you want to come scream with me I’d love for you to join me.

Lemmy is pretty raw, and even I’m not entirely sure how it works at the moment. I do imagine its kind of like reddit in the very early days of it’s existence and creating an account and posting is certainly easy enough. One thing I did seem to notice is that you can post large-ish images without significant compression which might be of interest to some regular posters. Honestly, my main purpose for writing this is to hopefully swing a few people down to make the community at least somewhat active.

I strongly suspect these regulations and restrictions aren’t going to be rolled back. Instead I think they will be expanded, eventually even to countries who don’t have mandatory ID laws. As such I expect to see a slow trickle of people coming down to Lemmy and other alternative communities over time (at least until reddit realises they’re haemorrhaging traffic and need to look at alternatives.).

I’ve managed to get in to post this via a very unreliable workaround that is not consistent and will probably be closed off in time. So for the remainders here, goodbye, it’s been great fun. Hopefully I’ll see a few of you elsewhere in the near future. I leave you with a final overview of the city I make seemingly endless iterations of.

Ciao.

Questions & Help Which mods should I install ?

I'm back on SC4 (Steam version on Linux) and I wonder which mods could be great for me. I played many years ago, I played a very few (without updating any mod) in 6-7 years but I used to play a lot near 10 years ago so many things have changed !

I already installed the NAM, some performances/graphics mods, SC4Fix. Not bats/props yet. Simfox DnN as usual.

I am questionning about :

- NAM : should I try MHO with RHW, instead of keeping the original MHW ?

- CAM : really important ? Really that good ?

- Lights : are LRM or USL good, in 2026, compatible with NAM 50 ? Do you use one, or another ?

- 4 GB patch : it seems to be included yet not installed by default with the NAM ; should I install it ? How to do that on Linux ?

Any other recommendations ? I don't want to make my game too complicated, yet I regret there is no big ports (like draggable sea ports in SC3000). Some good growable bat packs (not only bat-by-bat download) with DN version ? SC4pac makes it so easy now... And some years ago I remember being fan of jasoncw and Matttb(something)'s bats.

Thanks 😊

Questions & Help The 32x32 region has spoiled me. Hoping for a suggestion for a similar region.

I need to make a new region so I can use CAM, and this region is so easy to play and well thought-out.

I like the size of course, even though I play on the 16x16 variant, it's still huge. But also how it was seemingly built to ease the building of seaports and ferry networks. Easy enough coastlines, not a ton of elevation to work around.

I'd appreciate any reccomendations!

Edit: Here's the wonderful region I'm using.
