Never skated before but wanting to start, advice?

Hi!!! I'm 17 (F), a senior in highschool now, and have found myself with tons of free time in my new schedule. I feel so lazy bumming around doing nothing at home, and I haven't done a sport since before COVID (swimming). I don't have any extracurriculars. I want to be more active and trying something that will most definitely be embarrassing and awkward seems exciting to me.

I've watched some of Elissa Steamer's old stuff and Bam (I love Jackass), and it just really made me want to go out and do it. I think I'll ask for a board for Christmas.

My guy friends skate, but I think I'd want to learn on my own before I ever feel comfortable doing it with them. Parks seem really intimidating, so probably no visits for a while. I live in the suburbs and have a couple places in mind I can go to without people watching.

I'd really enjoy any general advice. Maybe from other girls who skate, or people who get embarrassed really easily.

Edit: Reddit recommended I post this to r/skatergirls too, so hi!!!

Mid 30s and still attempting kick flips! I'm sure she will get them back soon 😁. I'll stay cruising on my surf skate 🤭. Still inspiring šŸ’ŖšŸ¾.

i’m interested in learning to skate. i’m not athletic and have never successfully skated, but i haven’t tried much. i’m going to buy and indoboard for exercise and fun for winter (it’ll be my first winter in montana) but hope to purchase a skateboard next spring. any tips/advice (training, not feeling embarrassed, what boards are best) for a beginner would be appreciated

Hi, I'm helping my girlfriend build a board to start skating. Does this look like a good beginner setup? Is she missing any parts, or any recommendations? Thanks

Questions/Advice What helmet are you all wearing? 😊

Always skated street and done some flip tricks here and there but my 30yo self is started to tell myself I should start wearing a helmet after never wearing one!

I did try one of those sweat savers but sent it back as it just looked so mushroom like on my head despite it supposedly fitting! Like it just looked more like ā€˜sitting’ on m head šŸ˜‚ I’m wondering if its because ive never warn one and feel ridiculous or if there are lower profiles out there that are preferred.

Just wondering what helmet all you gals prefer?

UPDATE: Thanks for all your recs, I really like the S1 life saver when I got it but after recovering the triple 8 deep cover, I’m blown away! I put the s1 back on to compare and it just felt horrible - I’ll be sticking with the deep cover as it fits perfectly and doesn’t feel as bulky as I thought it would after customising - cheers all! šŸ’›

What type of skateboard should I get?

Broskis I need help 😭 I wanna buy a skateboard, but I don’t really wanna do tricks or anything. I mostly just wanna use it to get from A to B.

So I’m thinking I should probably get a cruiser instead, BUT the whole reason I wanna skate in the first place is because skating apparently originated from surfers wanting to surf on land. So now I’m thinking maybe I should get a surfskate because it actually mimics surfing on land??

Idk 😭 what do you guys think: cruiser, regular skateboard, or surfskate?

Meetup Delhi girls who skate, Are you interested in joining a small women-only skating group?

I'm starting a girls-only skating group where we'll explore different spots around Delhi, with repeated meetups at some favourites. The idea is simple: skate, explore, and have company so you don't have to go alone. It's for girls like me who either can't find a good enough place, and even when they do, can't go alone because it's too unsafe.

We would have Skateboarders, Rollerbladers and Rollerskaters.

If you're 16+ and interested, dm me.

Anxiety about returning to skateboarding

I’m coming back to skateboarding after about two years and I’m so anxious. I’m anxious about getting hurt, and how much it would cost and what if I couldn’t work? I’m anxious about the way it sucks me in and I feel like less of a person and more of a skater, like I’m abnormal and the ā€œnormalā€(non-skater) people around me don’t understand what it’s like. I’m anxious that I’ll fall into the old pattern of comparing myself and being hard on myself when I don’t land what I want. Day 1 was Friday and I was already getting those compliments again you know you’re only getting because you’re a girl in skateboarding, not because of the work you put in and it ends up feeling condescending. God condescending is the word I’ve been looking for. I’m anxious about the creepy men. I’m anxious about how even though I’m in ATL, I haven’t met any girls to skate with:/ I’m more self conscious of my age at the skatepark than I’ve ever felt before. Part of me wonders if this relationship between me and skateboarding is toxic and i need the toxicity to live. I’m anxious thinking about the people I used to know at the parks I used to skate and if I’ll see them again and if they’ll remember me as all the mistakes I made as a stupid 20 yr old. Part of me never wants to see them again so I can run away from myself and part of me just misses them so much the parks aren’t the same without them.

At the same time, I’m so excited. I’m so happy to be back out there, I’ve been so isolated and sad since I stopped. Skating is my only exercise, my social interaction, my favorite hobby. I stay awake at night again thinking about what I might try next. And to be honest, I was never good at anything until I started skating and it feels like such a shame to throw that all away, but I also couldn’t handle the pressure I felt from those around me. Like it is wood with wheels! If I want your advice and suggestions I’ll ask😭I just have so many feelings, it’s like I want the part of my life back but I don’t want it to become my life again if that makes sense.

Anyways does anyone else relate?

Also if there’s a meetup in atl area lmk:) I promise I probably won’t be such a ball of anxiety irl I just needed a rant

Questions/Advice Girl positive skateparks

My daughter (10) just started getting into skateboarding this year and absolutely loves it. A skatepark owner we were talking to last month mentioned an online resource where you can find girl-positive parks and shops that commit to a welcoming and affirming environment for younger girl skaters. I found Skate Like a Girl online, but was hoping to find a way to search for parks near me. Thanks for any advice you can offer. We’re in central Ohio if that helps.
