Alright let's try this again. Disclaimer: A Water Year is defined from October 1st to September 30th and standard use in hydrology and meteorology in the American West because of the distinct wet and dry seasons we experience.

Since we have an El Nino winter coming up and the internet is already full of hot takes and half-information, I figured I would share some statistically relevant data. The graphic you are looking at shows the Pearson correlation between the variable in the row and the variable in the column.

For example: 60% of the variation in average temperature in the period of record can be explained by increase in Water Year (simplified: more time in the dataset = higher temp). I would like to direct your attention to ENSO Mode vs WY Precipitation, that is "how much of the variation in water year precipitation can be explained by ENSO?". The answer is: None.

Do with that information what you will, this is just pointing out that deciding to book ski passes for Tahoe based on this being a strong El Nino has no scientific basis. Probably preaching to the choir here anyways. Hit me with questions!

Data is taken from the Global Historical Climate Network daily (GHCNd) dataset and looks at period of record (1903-2026). Caveat: I only have ENSO data available from 1947 onwards, so ENSO Mode correlations are calculated only for 1947 through 2026.

Hey guys! My partner and I are buying a place on the outskirts of Tahoe to move into full time. The couple were buying from have only been using it as an occasional weekend place so they never had a permanent bear box for garbage installed outside, since they would just pack their trash out with them. I did a brief search online but realized I don’t really know what to look for, so I’m just wondering where people have gotten their bear boxes from or if anyone has any recommendations. Thanks!

Sunsets; Last night and tonight in Truckee, CA

The sunset tonight was so multilayered, so complex!
I thought I would miss it, and I did miss a lot of the light to the East and South.
But when I looked to the West, it seemed almost psychedelic. There were hues of an infinite variety!

EDIT: sounds like the Timber Fire in Big Sur is finally making itself known in the basin. If this is what we’re dealing with today, we should expect more. fire is currently 23k acres, and they’re expecting it to get to 135k as the PRIMARY containment line based on the PACE maps they’re drawing...

Sounding like it’s going to be smokey until the fire hits those lines or the weather changes.

My husband and I are trying to recall what casino on South Shore used to give people a half a roll of nickels when you gambled there in the 90's.

August 26, 1980, in the early morning hours, two men in white jumpsuits pushed what looked like a large IBM copy machine into Harvey’s Resort Hotel & Casino in Stateline, Nevada.

It wasn’t a copier. It was a sophisticated, multi-trigger bomb packed with roughly 1,000 pounds of stolen dynamite, carefully leveled and armed with at least eight different triggering mechanisms so it couldn’t be moved or tilted. A three-page typed note left with it demanded $3 million in cash and warned that any attempt to move or disarm it would set it off.

The bomb was discovered around 6 a.m. The entire casino and neighboring properties were evacuated. Bomb techs spent more than a day studying the device. On the afternoon of August 27 they tried a remote render-safe procedure with a shaped charge. It failed and the bomb detonated, blowing a multi-story crater through the hotel and causing about $18 million in damage. No one was killed or seriously injured.

The mastermind was John Birges Sr., a Clovis, California man who had lost hundreds of thousands gambling at Harvey’s and decided to try extorting it back. He was later convicted and died in prison in 1996.

Still one of the most unusual and elaborately engineered bombs the FBI has ever dealt with.

I get the Mt. Rose pass every year but wouldn’t mind getting the Epic Pass or Diamond peak if that’s where I need to go. Good excuse to get another pass 😁

Some background. I’m 37, which I know is kinda crazy to break into park this late in life but whatever. I workout frequently and physically I still feel like I’m in my early 20s.

I’d say I’m pretty good, not great, but I can get down basically any run besides ones that demand doing crazy 10ft + drops off of cliffs. I picked the hobby up seriously in my late 20s and learned from friends and YouTube. Now I won’t act like I rip the chutes on mt. Rose in a straight line, but I have done them all.

I tore my ACL back in Dec ‘22 going off a small side hit and since then I’ve only mustered up the courage to maybe get like 4 feet of air but I want to change that this year.

Anyone bring the paddle boards on the Truckee? I saw a few out when I went tubing a week ago, but then I had a friend tell me he punctured his when he went. I figure if you're careful on the rough parts, you can avoid the rocks. I was going to 3d print some short fins so if they broke it would be no big deal. I will definitely exit the river before the rapids at River Ranch. Pic of my dog who's going to join me.

This is the meeting we've been waiting for regarding the Forest Service plan to spray glyphosate and other synthetic herbicides on thousands of acres of Tahoe Basin forest.

Five years ago next week the Caldor Fire entered the Tahoe Basin. Let's not let that be used as an excuse to bring glyphosate in now. The forest is coming back on its own. Whether it gets sprayed is still an open question, and Wednesday is when the people who decide will be listening.
