Characters (loved trope) Trans characters who do not/cannot pass but everyone still respects their identity

  • Lev from The Last of Us Part II: Lev is a trans boy who cannot medically transition due to being in a zombie apocalypse with a fascist government, yet the main cast in the story supports and affirms him as male.
  • Denise Bryson from Twin Peaks: A trans woman DEA and FBI agent. She does not pass in the series, which is an integral part of her character; her boss simply tells people who don't like it to "fix their hearts or die."
  • Cordelia from Vinland Saga: As a trans woman living in Northern Europe during the Viking age, it is impossible for Cordelia, who has a hulking, muscular figure, to transition to female. But despite not looking the part physically, everyone is cool with it and refers to her as female.
  • Ladiva from Granblue Fantasy: A pro wrestler who makes no attempts to pass (save for hair) and is still beloved by the cast as a maternal figure, serving as a stark contrast to her species' women who are petite.

Edit: typos and incorrect lore fixes

What did he do? /I havent watched it/

Overhaul is another villain and comes into conflict with Magne’s group, he murders Magne in this first exchange.

He also then misgenders Magne after killing her, which really pisses Toga and Twice off.

That’s always read as a bit funny to me, they were really like “I can excuse murdering innocents but I draw the line at misgendering”

One of the biggest differences between good and evil people in real life is that good people care about those who aren't in their immediate circle.

Even some of the biggest scum in the world care about their family/friends.

Hitler had a Jewish doctor who'd saved his mother's life declared a "noble jew" and allowed him to leave Germany safely, iirc

u/____Law____ 3h ago

I almost thought that was heartwarming before I remembered that was HITLER lmao

I recall essentially the opposite, a jewish doctor was unable to safe his mother's life and it was a big part of why he hated jews so much.

Interestingly, Hitler adored that family doctor. The dudes name was Eduard Bloch and he provided below cost or free care for his mother as she was dying of cancer. This is the doctor that Hitler gave special status to and allowed to emigrate out of Germany

Edit: to not too

I think it’s moreso “I draw the line at misgendering someone we care about.”

Yeah they were hyper loyal to their gang and completely callous to the rest of society

Considering that it's Twice and Himiko that react most intensely - figuring out and being accepted as their real identity is kind of a core element of their stories, too, and they are the most actively emotionally invested in the other members as a whole.

Plus, for Himiko, Magne was the only other girl in the LoV, and for Twice, I've seen some folks read it as him having feelings for her.

Even funnier is that overhaul seemed to genuinely not know and wasn't trying to be a dick in the misgendering. When they correct him he's just like "what? Okay back to talking about being criminals"

Even in war etc there's a line between killing and desecrating the dead

u/OddYogurtcloset1549 4h ago

Toga and Twice are villains, they shouldn't have any problem with murdering people.

u/Yumelize 4h ago

Even IRL villains are rarely universally misanthropic.

It's an absurdly low bar, but simply having biases & goals means they'll probably care about someone.

3

u/metroid1310 3h ago

They're selfish. Their friend was murdered and then (accidentally, I'm pretty sure) misgendered by her murderer.

56

u/bestoboy 4h ago

the first time was fine, understandable, but they get pissed off because he continues to do it even after they explained

6

u/Mr-Stuff-Doer 3h ago

Did he? I thought it only happened the one time

How tf did I not realize she was trans??? I watched the show when I was still transphobic and homophobic (religious upbringing, I've since moved on)

1

u/SportEfficient8553 21m ago

That was when I fell in love with Toga and Twice. The clear amount of love they had for Magne and clearly being ready to stab a bitch for being in anyway disrespectful almost made me cry.

7

u/Gently-Weeps 2h ago

Tbf to Overhaul, this wasn’t transphobic. He would have murdered any one of them, it just happened to be Magne

u/hypo-osmotic 2h ago

You know she's a woman because she's killed off in order to further a man's emotional arc :(

u/NinjaOfOnion 4h ago

He called Magne a him where Toga and Twice correct him and threaten him

Overhaul/Kai Chisaki has the ability to assemble and dissasemble all materials.

If use on a human he can removes limbs as if it were nothing, or he can make anysort of material expand.

But in the case of Magne, he made her explode

57

u/JournalistOdd6074 4h ago

He killed her

33

u/Iconmen_what 4h ago

And misgendered her twice

4

u/Gently-Weeps 2h ago edited 2h ago

He legitimately didn’t know though

Murder first, ask pronouns later type

2

u/observer-of-chaos 1h ago

Maybe didn’t know the first time, but the second, Twice and Toga get pissed and say they told him Magne is a she before, Overhaul basically says he doesn’t care (important to note the second time is after Magne is killed by Overhaul)

16

u/Z3R0Diro 4h ago

Legs. Became legs.

1

u/Peppered_Rock 1h ago

He's also a eugenisist who abused the fuck out of a child for her superpower, but we mostly hate him for killing Magne because the kid turns out alright

3

u/mxlevolent 1h ago

You know, thinking about it, Overhaul could've helped her transition in about 1 second.

That son of a bitch could've done ANYTHING with his quirk. It basically made him god. As long as he is in contact with something, he has complete control over matter. He could do whatever the fuck he wants.

And he chose to torture a little girl.
