Loud people in the library

To the people coming in and out of the 3rd floor library, talking their mouths off, do you have no etiquette? During orientation, we are told that the higher the level, the quieter the area. Tell me why I'm on the 3rd floor and there are imbeciles with no compassion for others or common sense talking to the entire library. This is a quiet area. If you want to talk your ass off, go to the first floor, not the third.

Advice for Masters application

Upvotes

Hello!! I'll be graduating this Fall of 2026 with my bachelors in Psychology, and I've been thinking about applying for my Masters in 'Counseling with a Specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling'. I guess I'm just asking for those who've applied for a Masters, how did you do it? I've really only done schooling and work, so I'm a bit worried about my lack of extracurriculars going on my resume. I'm just scared the application and research process looks so intimidating😭

Splatoon Local Discord

I wanted to set up a server so people in UTRGV, or in the Valley in general, could come together to play and discuss Splatoon! If we have enough people, we could even look into doing LAN tournaments!

Join the discord if you're interested: https://discord.gg/GJtw3HFqBk

This is slightly controversial.

I dislike that people use the scooters on the Bronc trail. I have almost been crashed into TOO many times. I feel like the UTRGV police or someone should enforce to give out tickets or citations for the scooters on the trail. However, I know that this will not be the case because they barely have time or care to do any of their other duties.

University life and life near the university

How is UTRGV’s campus and campus life? Also, is there a lot to do near campus? I’ve searched up gyms near campus, but would like to know more about the other places like places to study or night life. Anything else that you think I should know about UTRGV or Edinburg is also appreciated!

UTRGV is No. 4 nationally for college value, ahead of MIT and every Ivy. Maybe selectivity is an input, not an outcome.

According to Washington Monthly’s August 30, 2026 featured piece called “A Different Kind of College Ranking,” the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) ranks #4 nationwide in the 2026 Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars ranking

Yep, UTRGV is ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at #5 and every Ivy League university. Harvard is #6. Princeton is #7. Brown is #17. The University of Pennsylvania is #19. Yale is No. 20. Cornell is #21. Columbia and Dartmouth do not appear in the Top 30.

Before the obvious objection: no, this does not mean UTRGV has more prestige, funding, or selectivity than Harvard, MIT, or Princeton.

It means Washington Monthly changed exam rubrics

Instead of rewarding universities for exclusivity, prestige, and wealth, this ranking asks how effectively they help middle and working-class students get ahead. It considers whether institutions recruit students of modest means, keep tuition and debt manageable, help students graduate into solid earnings, and encourage public service (particularly important by the way)

Why is UTRGV ranked No. 4 nationally?

Washington Monthly reports that (copy-pasted):

  • 93 percent of UTRGV’s 28,666 undergraduates are Hispanic.
  • More than 67 percent are the first in their family to attend college.
  • Tuition is $5,383 per year.
  • Graduates earn an average annual income of $53,888 four years after graduation.

The gaming comparison that came to mind is fairly simple: imagine life as an RPG

Some players spawn with more resources already unlocked: family wealth, college-educated parents, tutors, professional networks, financial security, freedom from working long hours during college, and a complete walkthrough of how the higher education system works.

Others start without the map.... on hard mode (I was one of them).

Now imagine ranking gaming guilds primarily by the level of the players they recruit. A guild that accepts only level-90 players will "look extraordinary". But did the guild create those levels? Or did it select players who already had them?

Traditional prestige rankings often reward universities for assembling the strongest incoming roster. Washington Monthly asks a different question: What did the university actually add after the student arrived?

UTRGV did not beat Harvard at being Harvard.

UTRGV ranked ahead of Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, and the rest of the Ivy League on a different and arguably more democratic question: How much opportunity does a university create for students who did not spawn with every cheat code enabled?

Traditional rankings often "photograph students near the finish line"

A value-focused ranking asks how far the university helped them travel...

The most impressive university is not simply the one whose students enter with the highest stats... it is the one that helps its students gain the most levels.

You can disagree with how Washington Monthly weights its methodology. But the underlying question is difficult to dismiss: Should a university be judged primarily by the status of the students it selects, or by the distance it helps them travel?

In the game of life, not everyone gets the cheat codes. A university that helps people win anyway may be doing something extraordinary. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

\Full disclosure, I am an alumnus and lecturer who* 🧡s UTRGV. I took handwritten notes and used Perplexity to help me with formatting for this platform.

SAP max time alert reached for Financial Aid - loans

Doing a second BS degree at utrgv and got a notice I would meet the credit limit for Financial Aid which means I wouldn't be eligible for student loans anymore after this Fall semester.

Have any of you been through this? What are my chances of approval if I appeal? My GPA is above 3.5 and haven't failed any classes at all. I have been taking student loans and paying the remainder tuition out of pocket til now.

Really worried cause I still have 3 semesters and a summer semester to graduate. Did some rough math and it's total around $15k.

If the appeal fails, are there any private loans you all recommend that work with utrgv?

Hello everyone, with it being a new school year, I want to try and socialize and network with students! Ik there's events and clubs available, but it feels intimidating/scary to just go up and present myself to others. Any advice is appreciated, and/or if wanting to connect through here, I'd be happy to! :)
