Questions First year Biochem Student

Hi! I'm a freshman this year at the U of AZ, and am just wondering how bad is biochemistry? Really? I have a lot of anxiety regarding it already and we're only in the second week of school, but everyone I talk to about my major choice just tells me how hard it is and how much I'll want to drop out—I was even told I'd want to "k—ll myself and should bc there's no way I'll finish that major".

Not exactly a grest start! 😅

Even worse start because I'm minoring in Neuroscience.

For some background, I also know my first year is already a LOT different than other freshman. In my last 2 years of highschool, I took Dual Enrollment courses which led me to enter with 28 college credits already, so, after December I'll be considered a Sophomore already, even if I'm not really.

I'd like to go to medical school and become an anesthesiologist, or a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation(if anesthesia doesn't work) or a Family Medicine Physician(if the previous two fail).

My counselor told me I'm basically guaranteed to graduate in 3-3.5 years but I'm not too worried about that.

I'm mainly curious about how "bad" are the classes?

Should I give up now and switch majors?

The classes don't seem too bad yet but I'm really scared thanks to the fear mongering.

Questions Mistake on Tuition Charge?

I recently paid my tuition with my credit card and I was charged a 4.5% fee by Nelnet (the platform UA uses to process payments.) The 4.5% fee is for international cards... but I have a U.S.-issued card.

Has this happened to anyone else? Why did this happen?

I'll contact Nelnet when their customer service opens again on Monday. This is so frustrating... Feels scammy.

Questions Streetcar delays this school year

Is anybody else finding it impossible to rely on the streetcar as transportation to and from the U of A? I've experienced and heard of impossibly long delays. It has affected my family if not every day, then most days this week and seems way worse than last year. Asking for them and for research purposes. Trying to figure out what's going on.

Questions Advising

Can we switch advisors in the same major? I like my advisor but a friend really likes his advisor and talks about all of the things he gets when they meet.

Also, is it common for students to change majors because the advisors are better? I want to apply to HEAP too.

My roommate and I are greatly upset by this whole situation and we can’t even eat a sandwich out of depression because there’s NO SANDWICH PLACE EITHER. Why do they hate us and want us to starve?

Questions Are physical Cat Cards really not obtainable anymore, despite the official website saying they are?

Was just down there at that Cat Card office in the Student Union building, and the women down there all told me that I couldn’t get a student ID there, as there would be “no more physical cards”, and that “they’ve phased them out in favor of digital”. Is this legit?

The U of A website and Cat Card info pages explicitly say otherwise. If that’s no longer true, then it absolutely should have been updated by this new semester start.

And it just irks me that they’re forcing students to go the “everything online” route with an ID. Certain businesses and events have student discounts, but will I have to pull up the U of A app every time I want to show a form of student ID?

Can someone help me out here and let me know if they’ve heard anything about this shift? It just seems inaccessible for students who don’t always have smart devices with them/even use them. I prefer to have physical copies of all my cards and IDs anyways, as it’s more convenient wherever I go.

Questions What’s Going on with Campbell Park & Ride?

Not sure if anyone else who uses the Orange CatTran will see this, but does anyone know what’s going on with the New Park & Ride lot? They didn’t renew the lease for Lots 9004 and 9007 and set up a new lot on Campbell but now they’re saying we can’t even park there till August 31st due to construction?

Questions First time using federal aid

Im a third year, I’m having to use federal aid now that my VA funding ran out. I just found out the aid i get this semester doesnt get applied to the left over tuition i have from last semester 😭 my mom is asking if i can just take summer classes. Do they have federal aid for summer? Im only enrolled in two classes this semester which means i would have to take like 3 classes in summer. Idk how things work. Do they only approve the amount of federal aid you would need for THAT semester?

transfer student looking to make friends!

Hi everyone! I’m a transfer student and I’m pretty new here. I’d really like to meet some new people and make friends, but I’m still trying to figure out the best ways to socialize on campus.
If anyone else is also looking for new friends, I’d be happy to chat and maybe hang out on campus sometime!
Also, are there any clubs, events, group chats, or other good ways to meet people at U of A? I’d really appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Questions Students, staff, faculty: what's actually missing from the university's new AI Roadmap, for you?

I'm faculty here, and I remember the planning process of the University's AI Roadmap during AY2025–2026. I've read the published version a few times now, and instead of just listing what I think is wrong with it, I want to hear from people actually affected by it, because the document itself doesn't say much about any of you specifically.

Some things I noticed, for context:

The roadmap is about 7,400 words. Searched it for "metric," "measure," "baseline," "return on investment," "FTE": zero hits on all of them. "Budget" appears twice, both times just naming the Finance & Budget office. No dollar figures requested, no positions committed, nothing measurable attached to any goal in the document.

Two of the university's own official pages currently contradict each other about our own AI tool: the AI Tools & Data Use Guide says U of A GenAI is approved for Restricted data; the tool's own product page says, verbatim, it "has not been approved for the use of 'Restricted Data.'" Both are live right now.

The cited infrastructure people actually use, AI Verde, was built by CyVerse and has been running since May 2024, a year before the AI office existed. The new roadmap lists it as a future Phase 4 deliverable for 2027-28.

So, genuinely:

Students: does anything in here address what you actually need from AI on campus, or does it read like it wasn't written with you in mind at all?

Staff: if you've had to figure out what AI tools you're allowed to use for your job, has anything about this been clear, or have you had to guess?

Faculty: did any of this reach you before it was finished, or is this the first you're seeing of it too?
