For example, I have a family member who is unnecessarily HORRIBLE to all people to the point where she has no friends, and her own children cut ties with her when they each turned 18. It’s very obvious that her behavior has led friends and family to leave her, but she doesn’t seem to realize it. She will wonder about it and never reach the obvious realization that she’s the issue in each of these relationships.

I have been trying to remember this word for hours! I feel like there is a synonym for 'disclose' that maybe has an I or n or r in it but I can't remember it! It is not inform. I think there is a longer word that has a similar meaning. Am I imagining it? Help! I already tried googling it.

Tipping before a service is rendered feels like a totally different experience and transaction than something like sit-down restaurant gratuity. It feels like more of a "please" than a "thank-you." Since we're being prompted for before-service tips all the time these days, I was wondering if there could be a separate word for this.

Is there a word from a different language/culture that might be a good fit? For everyday use, it should be neutral/without judgment, and it probably shouldn't have any association with bribery or corrupt behavior. Baksheesh is the closest I've found, but it still misses the mark. If I can't find a good borrow word, I'm sticking with my made-up pre+tipping portmanteau "pripping."

I keep thinking of "interview", but as far as I understand those are defined by Q&A between the journalistic party and the subject of the interview.

In this one, the journalist arranges the meeting and environment for the meeting, but doesn't speak at all once and just lets the two parties talk when the camera rolls.

It's like, you might say "If you want to swim across the Atlantic, you must, by necessity, be a strong swimmer." Being a strong swimmer is a requirement to be met. But you wouldn't say "If you fall into a black hole, you must, by necessity, be squashed into paste," because it's not a requirement, it's just something that will absolutely happen. What do you say instead?

"You must inevitably be squashed into paste" doesn't feel quite right because the cause and effect seem only loosely connected (you could also say "If you enjoy raspberry seltzer, you will inevitably die" which is true, but the two don't have a lot to do with each other). "If you fall into a black hole, you must be squashed into a paste, by the very nature of black holes," is closer in meaning to what I'm looking for, but I feel there's a single word that describes that.

I could swear I’ve heard a slang term for those big orange Igloo water coolers with the spout like construction crews use. It’s something with a u in it and I think one syllable maybe, like trunk but that’s not it.

Example: car enthusiasts who remove unneeded weight and make tiny aerodynamic improvements to make a car as efficient and fast as possible.

Example 2: the Gong Fu tea ceremony where steps such as heating the tea pot first, or leaving the lid on the pot after pouring make tiny additive improvements that result in a perfect cup of tea.

It's not exactly a rhetorical question, but it's a question asked not out of actual desire to find out the answer, but with the intent to impress the person you're asking. An example would be they ask you at the end of a job interview, "Do you have any questions for me?" You're supposed to come prepared with a good question or two, but not necessarily because you care about the answer, but to show that you did some research about the company and are curious.

Another example is a strategy I used sometimes in college. I would go out of my way during the first week of a class to find a good insightful question to ask during a lesson. Sometimes it was a question I already knew the answer to. But I wanted the professor to be impressed that I was paying attention and was thinking deeply enough about the material to ask an interesting question.

Is there a specific adjective for this kind of question?

I know I’ve seen the word before. I’m making a TTRPG and I want the spy class named that.

I tried looking this up online already but most answers think I’m talking someone who constantly leaves others on cliff-hangers, like:

“The craziest thing happened today… but I can’t tell you, it’s a secret!”

This is not what I mean. I mean someone that tells you what happened but is intentionally vague about specific details for dramatic effect. For example, let’s say a guy named Fred and Bob are at a bar. Fred has partial hearing loss in one ear. Fred said something that upset Bob at one point during the night through their drinking and Bob spit on Fred’s shoes before walking away.
Now imagine someone witnessing that entire interaction and re-telling the story like this:

“I was at the bar and everything was fine until Bob PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED a DISABLED person!”

That is what I’m talking about, people putting dramatic labels on things to make the story sound far worse than it is.

Like if someone opened the door for someone, people wouldn't openly share about that too often. If someone closed or pushed the door on you, people would share that more often.

I can't remember if this was a prank, a thought experiment, or what, but about 20-25 years ago I saw several references to a made-up word. As I recall, it was supposed to be impossible to see, say, or remember, even though it was plainly visible on the page or screen. Anybody else remember this? (And yes, I'm aware of the irony.)

i'm southern. as i'm sure everyone knows, southerners have a habit of contracting their words. this is one i don't see much of. you'd pronounce it like "wall-ago", or "whal-go". for example, "i went to the store a while ago," becomes "i went to the store [wall-ago]".

the best i found for a contraction of this phrase was "wallago"... but that's a catfish, lol. are there any better was to contract it?

I’m trying to find a collective word that includes things like plumbers, carpenters, electricians, etc. A thing in my house is broken and I have hired a specialist to fix it; what do I call the person who shows up?

All I can think of “tradesman,” which feels both possibly wrong and definitely unnecessarily gendered, but “tradesperson” feels even more wrong.
