Dirt gives enough to not seriously hurt kids while still allowing them to get hurt just enough to learn the valuable lessons of how to fall and what the limitations of their bones are.

As soon as the kids with rubberized playgrounds hit adulthood, emergency rooms saw a drastic increase in catastrophic injuries for people who hadn't learned with lower stakes in their youth when their bodies were more forgiving.

My kids were huge climbers from a young age (my kid was climbing into cribs from the floor before others had thought to think about climbing out. I’d find them up trees, on the top of baseball back fences, on top of buildings, walking across the monkey bars, you get the idea).

I got them into gymnastics VERY young. People would always say, “oh, going to teach them how to climb?” Hell no. They can do that.

They needed to be taught how to fall safely.

One of my best friends in middle school had a bunkbed. One night she fell off the bunk bed and broke both of her wrists. She woke up her parents crying and they told her she was being a crybaby and to go back to bed. They even sent her to school where the teacher saw that her wrists were inflamed insanely and that she kept crying every few mins. So the nurse looks at her wrists and calls an ambulance to take her to the ER. They do an x ray and her parents arrive and yell at her for “crying wolf.” The x ray showed both of her wrists were broken. Her parents sold the bunk bed and got her a water bed.

Months later after they healed she started to say she could tell when a storm was coming. I didn’t believe her at first until she accurately predicted one.

Brain, brainstem, and spine injuries very much affect the young, and their effects can grow and accumulate/combine dramatically over time.

One impact especially to the back of the head or the side of the jaw can potentially kill any person. Boxers stave off immediate death through extreme neck/jaw stability but even then it still is terrible for them.

She should have gone to the hospital, shown them the video, and gotten scans after this. It was a very stupid thing to do, but it would worry good doctors enough to prefer to err on the side of caution and do through diagnosis of the injury unless they were lacking the resources.

I know we joke and everything but I hope she’s okay. I had a similar almost neck breaking incident (wasn’t trying for Spider-Man). Was at a trampoline park and was run jumping. Except I tripped and ended running head first into one of the slanted vertical trampolines.

Better that than a wall of course. But I just stopped existing. Next thing I know my sister is over me looking scared. I’m still trying to relearn how to breathe. Some 18 year old employee bounces over giving me a thumbs up. I’m too numb to really even know what’s going on so I throw up a thumbs up.

Don’t really remember getting up and having my sister help me waddle away. My mom recounts how obviously spooked I was. Spotting us as we huddled towards her.

Thankfully I got away with nothing permanent. No hospital visit. Just life being a bitch reminding me how quickly things could have been different. I’ve never been back to a trampoline park either.

I know this was less accident and more foolish mistake hanging from the ceiling willingly. But I hope she’s not forever impaired by such a mistake.
