I interviewed a lifelong Berliner who plays drums for Nena

I recently sat down with my friend Nader, a Berlin-born musician who has performed with Nena for more than 20 years. He originally joined as a guitarist in 2002 and later became the drummer.

We spoke about growing up in Berlin, its low-budget creative scene and whether the frightening version of Europe presented by some political travel vloggers reflects everyday life here.

We also discussed America after 9/11, immigration, escaping the traditional nine-to-five life, spending winters in Portugal and why India eventually changed his perspective.

It’s a relaxed conversation between two old friends rather than a formal celebrity interview. I’m curious what people who live in Berlin think. Has the city genuinely changed, and do viral videos provide an honest picture of life here?
