Tips on improving grip strength on silks?

I've been doing silks for 3+ years and feel quite confident and secure climbing, inverting in the air, and doing longer sequences without grip aid. However, for some reason I just couldn't hold a dead hang for more than 3 seconds. My palms just start sweating immediately and I will slide.

Does anyone else have this problem or have any advice on how I can improve? Rosin helps significantly but it's weird that I don't need it most of the time, only for hanging.

My friend who has a rig in her backyard told me to come over to just play, but then surprised me by saying she had props for a photo shoot! Ive been doing lyra pretty consistently for about 2 years now, but this was a first!

Need a Ludwig Quad Rig – medium to rent in the LA area

Hello Everyone! I’m helping a friend for an aerial performance and we were going to buy a Ludwig Quad Rig – medium but we just say that it is backordered for 8-10 weeks.

Would anyone in the LA area be willing to rent me this rig once for practice and once for the performance. The performance date September 17-19th. The practice date is flexible.

Please send me a message if you can help!

Classes for 7 year old near in NY.

Hi,

We live in the Bronx and my daughter used to do Aerial silks/Lyra on the UWS when we lived in manhattan. I know there's a studio in tarrytown, but the classes are too far for afterschool and they don't hold classes on the weekends. There's a studio on the UWS but it's a bit of a headache to get to since I'm also bringing my toddler and it's 3 flights up. We tried somewhere in Yonkers but the teacher hates children. Does anyone have ideas? Thanks so much.

Foot hang entry ideas

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello! I was seeing if anyone had any ideas. I would love to end my routine in a foot hang like in the picture. I'm using a velvet spanset. It took me 12 seconds to get into this and it was very sloppy. Has anyone done something similar? How can I get a quicker, cleaner entry? Any videos or pictures would be great. I thought what if I put something to keep the spanset open a bit. I also do other spanset work though so I need to be able to do that. Vaseline? Lol, then I could slip out. What else? THANK YOU for any help.

ATX Area Trainer

Hi. So my aerials gym in Bastrop closed a couple of weeks ago. I was really enjoying Lyra and pole. I want to try trapeze as well.

I know there are A LOT of aerial studios in Austin. But it would be difficult for me to go to consistently due to distance. A lot of the studios are 1.25+ hrs away. I work and go to school FT.

I broke my big toe on the last day the gym was open. I’m anxious to get back into the gym (any gym at this point). I like to feel prepared and I’ve been trying to search for a trainer in or around Austin that may be willing to meet me halfway somewhere when I’m healed up. I don’t even know where to start searching for someone like that.

Back pain from inverting ??

I’ve been doing pole for ~a year and a half and in the past few months have started doing straps as a secondary apparatus (once or twice a week). On both, I’ve noticed that I have pretty notable pain in my lower back (sometimes also in upper back between my shoulders) after a practice session or class that was focused on inverts. The first invert-focused class I did in pole about a year ago had me strugglin to move the next morning. It hasn’t been quite that level of intense since then, but in my last straps class I was already hurtin after 10 minutes of invert conditioning which made it difficult to do as many reps as I was hoping to of the combo we learned.

I’m wondering if this is typical after doing a lot of consecutive inverts ? And if so, does it go fully away with time as your body gets used to it or is it usually due to improper form/technique ?

Hi! I’m 26F and I started Lyra in January. I love aerial arts so much, there’s so much beauty in it. I decided to paint this Lyra in the sky!!

Let me know what your thoughts on it!! Also, I was playing with the idea of making Lyra paintings with different settings. Any ideas for another good background?

(Last photo is my first showcase in Lyra also hehe😄)

Advice for UK based Performance fees

Hey!

I have been in contact with a local ren faire in the UK for a performance for myself and 1 other aerialist to perform at a 3 day event.

Logistics can still be ironed out but its looking like 2x 8-10 minute performances each day.

I will be providing our rigging, equipment and costumes. What would be a reasonable amount to charge without undercutting like crazy?

The act will be aerial hoop based and we are both experienced with creating our own chores and attending scratch nights, we just have little experience working for paid events!

Any insight, even if via DMs if you aren't comfortable sharing your fees online would be much appreciated!

Extra context:

I would also be interested in how much you would charge for ambient acts at gigs and not just choreographed sequences as we may also look to offer this.

The event itself spans 3 days and tickets are approx £35 a day to enter the event.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or advice!

Hammock or Silks, which ones should I get?

My boyfriend wants to buy me a birthday gift and he was thinking of adding one more apparatus to our home. He was thinking of getting me silks or hammocks and now I am in a bit of a pickle.

Hammock:

pros: I would probably use it more for air yoga, given that I have a ceiling space of roughly 2.5 meters, seems that lyra skills translate easier to them

cons: if I ever want silks, I will need to buy them

Silks:

pros: I could use them with my pole (buying the X-pole attachment) + I can always tie them so they become a hammock

cons: I don't really like them as a stand-alone element + limited ceiling would mean not getting a lot of use + have to get figure eight riggings (hammocks come with O rings included) and the pole attachment, so they get pricier

So, in a way, silks seem more versatile, but also more of a hassle. If you were me, what would you do? Thanks!

I tried ben brown's scapula hang a few years ago and figured out i can hang from the excess skin on my back. I call it a zombie hang.

Suspected grade 2 hamstring tear

I went to a random aerial gym while traveling...and during alien split my hamstring tore. I think a big piece of info is that I'd started doing weights (hip thrusts and squats) as cross training again super recently and maybe didn't rest enough. I'm guessing it's grade 2 because there was a "popping" feeling, but I had no difficulty walking and no bruise etc so it's not a grade 3.

Anyway, does anyone have experience with this injury and how long they were out of commission? I've done lyra once since and pole once but I can't really invert-- that leg won't straighten completely. I'm just so sad :( I hope it's not months out of the air...

Weight loss before aerial?

I am 23 and have been wanting to do aerial since I was a preteen I think it's so beautiful. However I think I'm too heavy to start. I live in a pretty small town and there aren't many versatile options available for classes. I have already lost over 40lbs but I'm still very heavy at 230lbs. How should I go about making this a reality. I have been going to the gym and one of the goals I'm working towards is being able to lift my bodyweight. I've heard calesthenics would be helpful but I really don't know where to begin.

Aerial rigging

Hi everyone ,busy moving and creating our new studio and I was curious what everyone's studio rigging looks like?

And yes before all the judgement, a structural engineer will be designing and signing everything off.

Do most people use truss or I beams to rig on and what about for AERIAL YOGA that does not do dynamic drops etc?

Had anyone seen a studio with lots of portable rigs?

Thanks in advance.

Duo Straps Classes -Chicago

Hi all!

I currently take straps in Chicago and have performed in a small showcase doing duo straps.

I love duo straps but my current instructor no longer teaches it and I'm currently looking for a duo straps class if anyone is familiar with studios or gyms that are teaching.

Thanks!

I finally done my first straight arm flair! It's taken me month and months to get this. Can anyone recommend any exercises or anything I can to get rid of the bend in my knees? I am engaging my quads and my glutes but nothing is making me straight 😂
