My name is Shuhei Morita and I’m the director of Tokyo Ghoul, as well as an Academy Award nominated director of animated shorts for my work on Possessions, AMA!
Hello Reddit, and more specifically, a special hello to the /r/anime community. My name is Shuhei Morita, and I’m an anime director and story teller. Today I wanted to take the time to speak to the global anime community about both my career, and anything you may want to know about directing.

1.) Anything about showing stuff from Ishida's original draft is a confidential matter. Especially since the stuff in the art book is Ishida's copyright
2.) I already knew that season 2 was going to happen when we started season 1. Ishida-san had suggested for the 1st season to be focused on black hair Kaneki, where the 2nd season would be focused on white hair Kaneki. So we needed that traumatic experience to connect the 2 seasons and develop the character.
3.) 2D won't disappear - I think 3D will continue to be used alongside it. But what's good about CGI is that many ways of exploration/expression can be used - eg. using CGI to do camerawork like a documentary. I'd like to try and discover new ways of utilizing CGI and ways of expression using it.
4.) Root A is completely original based on Ishida-san's original idea. We first started working 3 months after season 1 was completed, so we had lots of discussion about the storyline. Ishida had specifically wanted us to create something original for the second season, which is why it moves in a different direction.
In the case of Tokyo Ghoul Re, Ishida-san had lots of ideas and did share some of them with me.
Interesting story: at the time the comic wasn't finished, he had to consider the final episode before everything started development. I asked Ishida how he would like to end season one, and he gave me the idea that he wanted to see, and then I started working. But Ishida prefers to work on a weekly basis with his manga, so the development was a bit different since he wasn't entirely sure what direction things were going to move when creating the manga at the time.
5.) Obviously I like them all - but probably the last, 12th episode of the first season. Obviously I love the direction, but an interesting fact is that the composer actually did the music for that scene live while watching it for the first time. That doesn't really happen but it was really effective, I think.
6.) I would like to do a story based on Touka, there is a specific story I have in mind as well.
