Just curious, like Mumbai is for Bollywood. Bluru for Kannada films, Hyderabad for Telugu, what city is the centre for Bhojpuri films? Like if I want to go and give an audition, is there any place in Purvanchal or Bhojpuri Speaking parts of Bihar.?

हम भोजपुर इलाका के पुराना ताबीज सभ पर जानकारी जुटावत बानी। सुनल बा कि घोड़ा के नाल (हॉर्सशू) के खाली किस्मत खातिर ना, बल्कि ताबीज के रूप में भी इस्तेमाल होखे – कबो घर के दरवाजा पर टाँगल जाय, कबो गाय-बैल के गले में बान्हल जाय, भा लइका सभ के गले में पहिरावल जाय। ई भी सुनल बा कि एकरा के दरवाजा के नीचे गाड़ दिहल जाय भा खेत में रखल जाय।

का कवनो जानत बा कि:

· इहाँ घोड़ा के नाल के ताबीज के लोकल में का कहल जाला? (भोजपुरी भा हिंदी में)

· एकर खास काम का रहे – नजर उतारे खातिर, भूत-प्रेत से रक्षा खातिर, भा कुछ अउर?

· एकरा बनावे भा इस्तेमाल करे के कवनो नियम-कानून बा का? (जइसे पुरान नाल चाहीं भा नया, लोहार से लेबे के बात, कवनो मंत्र पढ़ल जाय?)

· आजुओ एकर चलन बा का, भा सब बंद हो गइल?

हम मौखिक इतिहास के दस्तावेज बनावे के कोसिस करत बानी। अगर कवनो के घर में अइसन ताबीज बा, भा पुराना कहानी याद बा, त ओकर जानकारी भा फोटो साझा करीं त बड़हन मेहरबानी होई।

आज 2-3 गो ठेठ भोजपुरी गीत सुनत रहनी, आ ओहमें बार-बार “भरबीतन बा चाची”, “भरबीतना” जइसन शब्द सुनाई देत रहे। जिज्ञासा भइल कि आखिर ई “भरबीतन” के ह?

थोड़ा खोजनी त पता चलल कि भरबीतन एगो ऐतिहासिक/लोककथा के पात्र हउवें—कद में बहुत छोट, बाकिर बुद्धि आ हिम्मत में बहुत बड़।

कहानी के हिसाब से भरबीतन एगो गरीब विधवा माई के एकलौता बेटा रहन। जनम के समये उनका पिता के निधन हो गइल रहे। ऊ बस करीब एक बित्ता भर के रहन, एही से उनका नाम भरबीतन पड़ल।

बाद में एगो घमंडी राजा गाँव के गरीब लोग आ भरबीतन के माई के धन-दउलत आ मवेशी छीन लिहलस। भरबीतन राजा से लड़ल जाए खातिर महल निकल पड़लन। रास्ता में अपना बुद्धि से भंवरा, मेंढक, साँप आ आग जइसन अनोखा साथी जुटा लिहलन।

राजा उनका छोट कद के मजाक उड़वले आ अलग-अलग कोठरी में बंद कर के मारल चाहलस। बाकिर भरबीतन के बुद्धि आ उनका साथी सभ के मदद से राजा के हर चाल उल्टा पड़ गइल। आखिरकार राजा हार मान के भरबीतन के माई आ गाँव के सारा धन-मवेशी वापस कर देलस।

हमरा त सबसे रोचक बात ई लागल कि “भरबीतन” जइसन शब्द आजो भोजपुरी गीतन में जिन्दा बा, बाकिर ओकरा पीछे के कहानी आ अर्थ धीरे-धीरे लोग के याद से मिटत जा रहल बा।

भोजपुरी के अइसन ठेठ शब्द खाली शब्द ना हउवें—ई हमनी के लोककथा, इतिहास आ संस्कृति के टुकड़ा हउवें। दुख के बात बा कि धीरे-धीरे अइसन बहुते शब्द विलुप्त होखत जा रहल बा।

अगर रउआ लोग में केहू भरबीतन के कहानी, लोकगीत, या एह शब्द के अउरी स्थानीय अर्थ जानत होखीं त जरूर बताईं। 🙏

Pranam, sabhi Bhojpuri bhai-bahin log ke!

Something really interesting happened today. I went to teach my students, but when I arrived, I noticed they were busy setting up a special puja. When I asked them about it, they told me they were worshipping their family's clan god (Kuldevta). Since they are Bhojpuriya just like me, it got me thinking—what about my own family’s Kuldevta?

I immediately did some digging and called up my elders. I found out that:

• On my father's side, our Kuldevta is Sokha Baba (Virbhadra avatar).
• On my mother's side, it is Narsingha Baba (the fierce Narasimha manifestation).

To add to that, I asked a neighbouring bhaiya (who is also Bhojpuriya) about theirs, and he told me their lineage worships Bami Sati Maiya as their Kuldevi!

It’s so fascinating how deep and unique our roots are, yet how many of us growing up in cities or younger generations don't know much about these specific folk deities until we look into it. Learning about the Sthan, the Patair rituals, and the history behind Sokha Baba and Narsingha Baba has been a beautiful eye-opener today.

I’m curious to know about your family traditions!

• Who is your family’s Kuldevta or Kuldevi? (Is it Sokha Baba, Goraiya Baba, Narsingha Baba, Bandi/Bami Sati Maiya, or someone else?)
• Which district or region in the Bhojpuri belt does your family originally belong to?

I’ve had enough of this.

Ravi Kishan (born in Mumbai, family roots in Jaunpur, UP), Dinesh Lal Yadav “Nirahua” (Ghazipur, UP), and even Manoj Tiwari (born in Varanasi, though his family has roots in Kaimur, Bihar) have made careers out of selling a cartoon version of “Bihari/Bhojpuri” culture.

On Netflix, in Hindi films, or when they work in South movies, they act like normal, controlled performers. Suddenly when the camera rolls for a Bhojpuri film, the same people start shouting, rolling their eyes, doing exaggerated “dehati” mannerisms, and leaning into every rural stereotype possible. Loud, crude, over-the-top, as if that’s the only way to be “authentic” Bhojpuri.

The problem is that the rest of India doesn’t distinguish carefully. For a huge section of the audience, Bhojpuri cinema = Bihar. So when these actors (two of them pure UP Purvanchalis) milk the most exaggerated “dehati” tropes for easy money and mass appeal, the stereotype sticks to actual Biharis.

They get to cash in on the Bhojpuri market while presenting themselves as the face of the culture, then switch to “sophisticated” mode the moment they’re outside it. That’s not representation — that’s selective caricature.

Bhojpuri is spoken across eastern UP and Bihar. The language and culture are shared. But constantly reducing it to loud overacting and rural buffoonery on screen while behaving normally elsewhere only reinforces the worst outsider perceptions about Bihar.

If you’re going to claim the identity and make money from it, at least stop actively feeding the stereotype that hurts the people who actually live with the consequences.

I remember listening this song on YouTube. It wasn't uploaded on some big label channels like T-series that's why I'm unable to find it. Its a romantic song. The lyrics / poetry was written by a writer from buxar. the writer / poet died long ago. i remember reading about him on a webpage. I'm looking for the poet name as well.

I was just wondering do we have a word of our own instead of saying liye/khaatir, my grandmother says khaatir.

For example: hunkra khaatir kinle baani / I have bought this for them.

The word khaatir I guess comes from an Arabic origin, this has been quite used in bhojpuri I guess.
