Housing Pete

Buckle up, I’m about to get wordy

It was absolutely dumping rain today. My basement is flooding. Over the past month or so, I’ve been trying to trace it back to where the water is coming in. Peeling back layers of the basement one at a time; pulling up carpet, carpet padding, moving out the gym equipment so I can pull up the gym floor I installed a few years ago.

Today, Mother Nature shoved her way into that basement with the most attitude she’s shown down there yet.

On my way home from the place of all things hardware and hardware-esque advice giving folks, Kovarik Hardware, I saw a man with a sign, sitting on the corner in his wheelchair, huddled under a sheet of plastic, during the torrential downpour of Mother Nature’s latest flex…everything he owns in his lap or the grocery bag hanging on the back of his chair.

Pete, he reminded me when I pulled up, though his name is information my brain held onto in the vast sea of all the information it doesn’t.
I’ve met Mr Pete before, though it’s been since last summer that I saw him, when he was wheeling his one-legged self around on a bicycle, carrying a crutch, sometimes as if heading for a joust…he really likes creamsicles when it’s hot should you see him about…Mr Pete is now navigating his homeless life with no legs, in a wheelchair.

I can’t tell you how many cars drove past as I talked to Mr Pete, in his wheelchair, in the pouring rain…everything he owns in his lap or the grocery bag hanging on the back of his chair (are you seeing the picture I’m painting here yet? I’ll probably say it again just in case).

I also can’t tell you how many cars continued to drive past through the storm, as I put his things into my backseat, lifted Mr Pete into my front seat, and loaded his wheelchair into the back of my truck.

Not. One. Single. Person. Stopped.

I don’t know what path brought Mr Pete to where he is today. I do not fucking care. He’s a person. He’s a father to 2 grown boys. His name is Pete.
Pete is a person. He’s one of us. He’s a person sitting there, during the rains that flooded my basement, in his wheelchair, in the pouring rain…everything he owns in his lap or the grocery bag hanging on the back of his chair (told you you’d hear it again).

It was absolutely dumping rain today. My basement is flooding.
But…I have a basement.

We need to do better.

Discussion What went wrong with all the local fast food restaurants?

Upvotes

McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Wendy’s. Wherever we go, it’s constant 20 or more minutes wait after ordering. Drive through is even worse. It’s no longer fast and not cheap either. Nirchi would be a more solid choice to be honest.

Recommendation Heading to Binghamton for LUMA. Any recommendations for where to eat? Or things to do during the day?

If you have a favourite breakfast joint, I’m begging you to tell me. The wife is a massive breakfast fan so that would be a real win for me.

Any uniquely Binghamton things that we shouldn’t miss?

Or do you happen to have an epic arcade nearby?

Recommendation Suggestions!

My best friend is currently staying out in the Binghamton area and is turning 30 at the end of the month. Looking for some recommendations on where to go out that isn't too college but still a good time!! I am 27F and my friend is also a female! We both love dive bars but want to see if there's anything we haven't heard of or seen in the area or even in the surrounding areas. Thank you!

Recommendation Vet Recommendations for specialty care

Hello! I'm moving to the area in a month, and am looking to get my dog, Scotch, established at a vet as soon as possible.

My dog has an autoimmune disease called pemphigus which causes a lot of sores and scarring. He is on an immuno-suppresant medication which makes him more susceptible to infections and sickness.

He will need a vet that preferably has had experience with this disease or similar, sanitizes well between patients and most important will let me continue to get his medication online (I don't want to be required to buy his medicine from the vet)

I know this sounds like a lot, I just want him to be a safe as possible and to have a vet that understands his condition.

Thank you for any suggestions you have!

Recommendation Where to sell jewelry?

I’m looking to sell my wedding and engagement ring. I don’t have any of the original papers or appraisal that came with the set. Is there someplace in the area that would buy it at a reasonable price?

WHEN:
Sat 9/5/26 + Sun 9/6/26
8am-4pm (both days)

WHERE:
Hillcrest
Right near Suzy-Q’s
(Follow the signs.)

WHAT:
Tons of random stuff that’s worth checking out. Clothing, cute Japanese merch, jewelry, random stuff spanning generations, nothing that you’d look at and think, “Why didn’t they just throw this stuff away?”

WHY:
‘Why?’, what? Why are we selling it or why should you come? Oh, both. Ok cool. Let me think… money, stuff and space. We want more space in exchange for money. You want more stuff in exchange for money. Everyone happy!

Message me if you have questions. Honestly we’re still adding stuff to the pile. So if you wanna know if we have certain things I’ll look but it might just not be on “the pile” yet. By “pile” I mean treasure pile.

Ok that should be good for now. Have a great week and hope to see so very many of you this weekend!

Oh and if you see this and go be a sport and tell me bc I spent like 3 hours of this stupid ad type post and it would make my day to hear you saw it.

Last bit: We take cash, Venmo, Cashapp and credit cards

Recommendation Looking to get my hair dyed rainbow! Good salon recommendations?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I want to get my hair dyed like the reference picture. I have never bleached my hair this much (only a couple thin highlights once), so I’m pretty nervous. I have moderately healthy hair, but it isn’t perfect. I also do have natural curls/tight waves if that changes anything. I was looking into Salon Trend, but it looks like they don’t offer many color services (just highlights, lowlights, and balayage) and in general don’t seem too alternative-friendly. My current options are Canvas Studio Salon on Pennsylvania Ave or So Jealous on Harry L Dr.. Does anyone have anything to say about these salons, know any colorists/stylists there that I should ask for for this dye job, have any other salons to recommend, etc? Like I said I’m pretty nervous, I want to get this done right and i’d really appreciate any pointers or recommendations as I am new to Binghamton.

Discussion Rumble Ponies GM Canned?

Saw the announcement about a new GM. What happened to Richard? People are commenting that he might’ve been fired with one week left in the season. If so, the ownership team couldn’t have done it a more low way. Anyone know the real story?

Storm Anyone else affected by the storm Thursday?

Our basement was flooded with roughly 3 feet of water and it completely screwed our furnace and hot water heater. Everything was electric and submerged. Crazy debris all over the yard. It actually managed to knock over an old dresser down there. So much mud and silt. Which is gonna get moldy eventually. We're already behind on house projects and can't deal w this rn. Anybody else having to deal w this bullshit and what do you do? Crossing our FINGERS that home insurance will cover this despite the house being a little old and beat up? It's killing us man!

Recommendation Bar recs?

Where do those in their mid-20s to 30s go on a night out? Ideally in or around downtown/the westside. I like music and dancing, but I also don’t mind a place that’s more chill with darts/pool. Are there places downtown that more locals/grad students go to? I feel like so many places cater to undergrads and that’s just not what I’m looking for. Lost dog is my favorite spot, but I’m looking to branch out a bit. Thank you <3
