Hey hey! It's been a minute since I've posted in here, but I recently published my first romantasy, and will be following up with the sequel in December. I got some wonderful advice with the first cover and would love to make sure the second blends well with the first! Just to be sure they look like a series rather than two standalones with similar covers lol. I am still playing around with the second cover, but I think it's getting there. Thank you! I’m teaching myself digital art so I can illustrate my own dark fantasy cover. Would love some advice!

I’m working on a dark fantasy webnovel called Beloved Dawn, and I’ve decided I want to create the final cover artwork myself.

I’m still learning digital art and using Krita, so this is going to be a project... I’ve been collecting published covers that I love to study their composition, use of color, typography, and how they communicate “dark fantasy” without becoming visually overwhelming.

My story deals heavily with identity, trauma, manipulation, racism, abuse, and autonomy, so I want something beautiful and almost fairytale-like at first glance, but with an unsettling quality underneath.

For artists and cover designers: what would you recommend I pay particular attention to while designing it? Composition? Value? Typography? Thumbnail readability? Anything you wish you'd known when you started?

I'm not looking to copy any of these covers, just studying what makes them effective.

It's still in its VERY rough stages, but this is where I've landed so far! I still have a lot I need to do, but I really like the direction it's going.

Very basic description because I'm still working it all out:

Three nepo baby brothers return after a night out, only to discover someone else is already inside their family's home. Each brother will have the personality of a horror character trope (the one who takes charge, the one no one believes (that one may change) and the coward).

The brothers will also have actual personalities outside of their tropes just to be clear lol.
